Measurements were made by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1948 and the British Antarctic Survey from 1971 to 1972 . Aerial photographs were taken in 1966 by the United States Navy . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1977 after the Zonda , a foehn wind in the Argentine Andes .
