Benedict Zoological Garden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Benedict Zoological Garden was the first public zoo in Munich . It existed from 1863 to 1866 on property no. 12 on Wiesenstrasse, which borders the English Garden (today Koeniginstrasse 28).

history

The Munich wholesaler Benedikt Benedikt, who was considering founding a zoo in Munich, initially planned to set up a stock corporation for this purpose, based on the example of the Frankfurt zoo . Because of the lack of interest from potential donors in this model, he then tackled the project on his own. To this end, in September 1862 he acquired a plot of land on Wiesenstrasse west of the English Garden, on which Jean Baptiste Métivier had built a villa in the Italian Renaissance style in 1823 for the then Minister of War Nikolaus von Maillot de la Treille , the so-called Maillot-Schlösschen. The factory owner Gustav Schulze bought the property in 1839 and had a greenhouse built on it in 1847.

In 1867 the project exceeded Benedict's financial capacity, which is why an attempt was made to auction the property. Since no buyer could be found, the property fell to the city of Munich , which leased it to the entrepreneur Hermann. This expanded the concept of the zoological garden to include event catering with concerts. Drawings of the project appeared in Munich Punsch .

In 1870 the later Kommerzienrat Karl Rosipal bought the property and lived in it until old age.

After 1924 part of the property was acquired by the Anschütz-Kaempfe-Stiftung ( Universitätsreitschule München GmbH) and part of the Order of the Sisters of Mercy .

Today the headquarters of Allianz SE is located on the premises .
