Building description and history

Mayor Friedrich Bormann

The inn was first mentioned in a document in 1707. At that time, Johann Andreas was the owner of the property. However, the property was already in the hands of various other owners. A house owner directory published in 1935 by Bad Liebenwerda historian and founder of today's district museum of the city of M. Karl Fitzkow in the local history series Die Schwarze Elster names Gregor Frenzel as the owner of the house with the number 84 for the year 1551. The house is found in 1755 again mentioned as an inn. It was authorized to brew and possessed hospitality. At that time, a Michael Schneider owned the building. At the end of the 18th century , in 1798, the house suffered severe damage from a devastating city fire, which was triggered by a lightning strike and which killed 43 town houses and the town hall. As a result, there was no longer any catering business on the property and was only used as a residential and warehouse.

During the wars of liberation at the end of September 1813 the corps of the Prussian generals Dobschütz and Tauentzien with 30,000 men took quarters in Liebenwerda for ten days. Dobschütz and many high officers of the corps took up their quarters in the inn Zum Weißen Roß .

Two years later, Friedrich Bormann took over the house and resumed the restaurant business after renovation and expansion work. A few years later the inn is mentioned in the travel guide A Handbook for Travelers on the Continent by the English publisher John Murray (1808-1892), published in 1836, and is referred to as very good and excellent sleeping quarters on the Berlin - Dresden postal route . The house was one of the best addresses in town and over the years it has hosted many prominent guests. On the guest list, among other things, members of the royal family of Friedrich Wilhelm III. and President Paul von Hindenburg (1847–1934). The mayor of Liebenwerda, Friedrich Bormann, who took over the office in 1860, also lived and lived in the White Horse . He held this office until 1871.

The historical buildings serve the catering and hotel industry up to the present day. The Restaurant & Café Exil has been located here since 2009 . The large hall of the inn is now on the list of monuments of the state of Brandenburg. This massive half-timbered building was built around 1900 and has a gable roof. Its base is made of sandstone.
