action

Downtown Nantes (2005)

Jean Cholet, a young journalist with the Gazette in Nantes , still lives with his parents, a family of small employees who are dutiful and humble. When he first attended an official banquet one evening and drinks excessively, he provoked a scandal; shortly afterwards, after being kicked out, he ends up in a cabaret, the L'Ane-Rouge . There he is in the company of a certain Speelman, a winning person who impresses the young man. Attracted by the atmosphere of the pub, Cholet regularly visits the artist milieu and gets to know the young Lulu, who soon becomes his lover. Through his escapades, Jean emancipates himself from his petty-bourgeois parental home; his mother appears to him as an eternally lewd victim. The audacity leads to Jean becoming more and more addicted to alcohol; the first debts have already been made. In order to live out his new feeling of strength, he lets himself be persuaded to steal registry office documents, which Speelman is interested in, who works on him with his pride. Eventually he neglects his work, he feels compelled to make use of lies in order to get money, but then he decides to put an end to mediocre existence. He moves to Paris; his father's unexpected death leads him to mistakenly believe that his father's boss will help him. This mistake triggers one final crisis for him before Jean Cholet takes his place again in society and henceforth avoids L'Âne Rouge .
