Zwölferturm (2003)

The Twelve Tower ( Italian: Torre delle dodici ) is the tallest building in Sterzing (Italian: Vipiteno ) with a height of 46 meters and thus a landmark of the city in South Tyrol . According to tradition, the name Zwölferturm comes from the fact that its 12 o'clock strike calls the residents to lunch. The tower can be visited during the Christmas market from late November to early January.

history

The Zwölferturm was built from 1468 to 1472 in place of the Upper Gate according to plans by the builder Hans Feur von Sterzing. On October 3, 1867, between six and seven in the evening, a fire broke out at the Hirschenwirth , with which parts of the tower are connected. The building, especially the upper part, was badly damaged after a fire. The Gothic pointed helmet and the remaining wooden components, their bells and the tower clock , which remained undamaged until about ten o'clock in the evening, were fed by the fire.

The reconstruction took place in 1868 according to plans by Josef Faißtnauer for the salary of 5000 guilders . The carpentry work was carried out by the master carpenter Michael Kelderer. In the same year, new bells were cast by the Grassmayr bell foundry in Wilten . At first the tower served as the upper city gate and was later the seat of the fire brigade for many years.
