Zwack is a traditional company from Hungary . It is the manufacturer of the gastric bitter Unicum . The origin of the company goes back to the bitters of the court doctor Zwack, which he developed in 1790.

history

The history of the Zwack distillery is closely linked to the Unicum product. The company was founded in Pest in 1840 by József Max Zwack. The company was registered in German as Josef Max & Ludwig Zwack . With the product Unicum, the company rose due to the strong exports. In 1890, production had grown so much that the company had to move to new premises in the 9th district of Budapest ( Ferencváros ), where production is still located today. The company eventually became a purveyor to the Imperial and Royal Court .

Production came to a standstill in the Second World War when the factory was destroyed. After the factory was rebuilt, the company was nationalized in 1948 under the communist regime. The Zwack family fled to Italy . After the fall of the Wall in 1989, Péter Zwack (1927–2012) succeeded in buying back the company in Hungary with the help of the Underberg Group and making it profitable again; today the Zwack and Underberg families own 50% of the company's capital plus one share.

In addition to the well-known bitters, Zwack also produces several types of brandy or schnapps and liqueurs. Other products are:

  • Vilmos
  • St. Hubertus
  • Fütyülős
  • Zwack Pálinkák
  • Kalinka Vodka
  • Puszta Barack

Wine like the Tokaj is also supplied.
