The Second Nanjing-Yangtze Bridge ( Chinese  南京 长江 第二 大桥 , Pinyin Nánjīng Chángjiāng dìèr dàqiáo ) is a road bridge over the Yangtze in Nanjing , the capital of the Chinese province of Jiangsu .

history

With a population of six million, Nanjing is one of the largest cities in China. Most of the population lives on the south side of the Yangtze. The two parts of the city were only connected by ferries for many years until the first bridge over the Yangtze was opened in Nanjing in 1968 . The combined road and rail bridge not only served local traffic, but also handled long-distance traffic. In October 1997, the construction of the second Yangtze Bridge began, which should relieve the first structure. After the pylons had been erected, the carriageway girders were erected symmetrically on both pylons using a cantilever . On July 8, 2008, the two halves were welded together to form a continuous beam. When it opened in March 2001, the bridge was the longest cable-stayed bridge in China. The construction costs were given at 3.35 billion yuan . Just two years later, construction of the third Nanjing-Yangtze Bridge began , which opened in 2005.

Building

The bridge is about 300 km upstream from Shanghai , where the Yangtze River meets the East China Sea , and about 11 km below the first Nanjing-Yangtze River Bridge. It is part of the Nanjing-Luoyang Highway . The entire river crossing is 12,517 m long and leads via Baguazhou , the third largest island in the Yangtze. The bridge over the north arm of the river consists of a 2,212 m long continuous beam made of prestressed concrete , which has a span of 165 m, the bridge over the south arm of the Yangtze is 2,938 m long, with the core piece being the 1,238 m long cable-stayed bridge described here with a span of 628 m. It has two reinforced concrete pylons on which the stay cables are attached in two levels and the roadway girder is suspended. This is a 38.2 m wide and 3.5 m high steel box girder , which was composed of 93 segments. Each of these 15 m long segments weighs 270  t , and 23,000 t of steel are used throughout the bridge. There are carriageway crossings on both sides of the cable-stayed bridge , which can absorb 1.6 meters of expansion per crossover.
