The two-spotted tetra ( Exodon paradoxus ) lives in South America in the Amazon river basin , in the Rio Madeira , Rio Marmelo , Rio Tocantins and in the Rio Branco in Brazil and Guyana .
features
The tetra, which grow to be 15 centimeters long, have an elongated, laterally compressed body. Your dorsal fin is supported by ten to eleven fin rays. The anal fin has 19 to 22 rays, an adipose fin is present. Young fish have yellow flanks and a silvery underside. The middle and the tip of the dorsal fin, as well as the front edges of the anal, ventral and pectoral fins are red. It is named after two large black spots on the sides, just before the dorsal fin and on the base of the tail. When light falls, the fish glitter intensely, silvery. Old animals turn yellow-gray, the spots are only indistinctly visible. During the spawning season, the females have a thicker body.
Way of life
Two-spotted tetra are schooling fish. They feed on smaller fish and other animals. Larger fish attack them, tear out scales and bite off their fins. The courtship is stormy. The fish spawn between aquatic plants. The larvae hatch after 25 to 30 hours. Brood care does not take place.
Aquaristics
Two-spotted predatory tetra were first imported as ornamental fish in 1935. However, the beautiful fish are not suitable for socialization with other, smaller species in the community aquarium. They should be kept in larger groups of ten to 15 animals and only in the company of robust catfish . Two-spotted predatory tetra have also been bred, but rearing the young fish is difficult because the animals attack each other.
