The pygmy hedgehog ( Hylomys parvus ) is a species of the small rat hedgehog within the hedgehog (Erinaceidae), which occurs endemically in a very small range on the central west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra . It includes the slopes of the active stratovolcano Kerinchi and the mountains of the Barisan Mountains immediately to the north and south .

The dwarf rat hedgehog reaches a head-trunk length of 10 to 12.7 centimeters and a tail length of 1.5 to 3.2 centimeters. The hind feet are 22 to 25 millimeters long and the ears are 17 to 19 millimeters long. The weight of the animals has not yet been determined. The skull has a length of 29.3 to 33.4 millimeters, the condylobasal length ranges from 28 to 32.1 millimeters and the width of the brain skull is between 13.1 and 14 millimeters. The top row of teeth is 14.6 to 16.9 millimeters long. Compared to the short-tailed rat hedgehog ( Hylomys suillus ), the dwarf rat hedgehog is smaller, it has a softer fur, a more delicate skull and a notch between the tips of the intermaxillary bone .

Little is known about the way of life of Hylomys parvus . The species occurs in moist mountain forests at altitudes of 2000 to 3000 meters.

Hazard and protection

The species is listed as endangered (vulnerable) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) due to its very small distribution area of ​​around 15,000 km² and increasing deforestation. The Kerinchi-Seblat National Park is in the range of the species .
