Kennel name

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Breed name or kennel name are by the associations for the breeding of domestic animals given name. Kennel names are given to purebred animals. are based on the registered name of the kennel or breeder. Rules for these names are drawn up by the organization that assigns and administers the breed names. All animals from the same breed usually have the same prefix. There are exceptions, depending on the organization. B. for different breeds of dogs from the same kennel. An animal usually bears its breed name in addition to a shorter nickname. Kennel names are particularly known for dogs , horses and cats .

In addition to the mandatory rules for breed names, there are also various traditions. These are not compulsory, but some breeders see them as almost mandatory or common.

Legal status

The registration of breed names is done through umbrella organizations for the various animal species. From a legal point of view there are no restrictions and even small associations can assign breed names. Likewise, the same breed name can theoretically be given to different people by different organizations. In practice, therefore, only registration with the major international umbrella organizations makes sense. These have sufficient members who are tied to the association. The organizations ensure a protection of breed names within their own organization and its member associations. National animal organizations are usually affiliated with an international umbrella organization. This article only covers the largest organizations.

Breeding names of dogs (kennel names)

Dogs that are supposed to participate in some dog sports or dog shows often need to be purebred. Only pure-bred dogs receive a pedigree, which is documented in a stud book . To breed a recognized dog breed, a breeder must be a member of a canine association such as the FCI , the Kennel Club (KC) , the American Kennel Club (AKC), or the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) . In addition to these mutually recognizing organizations, there is another large association, the United Kennel Club (UKC) .

Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI)

Members of an FCI association must apply for a kennel name before breeding. It applies to all breeds bred by the same breeder. Each of these names is unique but can be freely chosen with some restrictions. An FCI breed name must not exceed 35 characters (including spaces). Kennel names that include dog breeds have not been allowed since 2007. Many breeders use their own name or place names (e.g. "from Boverheide") as a basis. There are no limits to the imagination and so there are not only fictitious names (e.g. "vom Schöne Abenteuerland") and allusions to fictional places and people (e.g. "of Hogwartscastle").

Kennel Club (KC)

At the Kennel Club, a kennel name is not mandatory. Instead, the KC advertises the uniqueness and distinctiveness of such a name. As a guideline, the kennel name and the dog name should be more than one word but less than 25 letters. A breed name may not be repeated within a dog breed - the names therefore apply to one dog breed. Numbers and initials as well as general expressions relating to the dog are not allowed, nor is the owner's surname.

American Kennel Club (AKC)

The American Kennel Club has similar requirements and began recognizing kennel names as early as 1887. This name can come from the imagination but must not have more than 2 words and 15 letters. Names that have been used in the past ten years are not permitted and must not be similar to or contain the names of races, AKC titles, city names, family names, companies, famous people or typical names. Owners of pet shops are not allowed to wear an AKC Kennel Name.

United Kennel Club (UKC)

The United Kennel Club does not offer the option of registering kennel names. Only individual litters can be registered in this organization.

Canadian Kennel Club (CKC)

To register a kennel name with the CKC, the breeder must have been breeding pure-bred dogs for more than 10 years. At least 5 of these bred dogs must be registered with the CKC and there must be no disciplinary action against the breeder. The kennel name can have up to 12 characters. Avoid asterisks, hyphens, apostrophes, accents, the word royal, colors, frequently used words relating to dogs, registered names or phonetically similar names to a registered kennel or member association, as well as names which the CKC considers misleading or inappropriate.

Other traditions / regulations

In addition to the regulations of the umbrella organizations, there are traditions that differ by nation or region. In France, for example, all puppies in a calendar year "should" have names with the same first letter. Other traditions assume that the first letters of a bitch's puppy name go alphabetically from A to Z, individually or by litter.

Breeding names of cats (kennel names)

Kennel names are also used for cats.

Kennel name protection center

The kennel name protection center is a privately run register which compares and registers the kennel names on behalf of the participating cat clubs. There are (as of 11.2019) 75 German, two Austrian and two Swiss clubs involved. There are also big clubs like the 1st German Noble Cat Breeders Association (FIFe). The kennel name is protected for the life of the breeder, but is also inheritable. If the breeder applies for a new kennel name, the old one will be closed. Breeding communities can apply for a common kennel name. If the community is dissolved, the kennel name will be closed and cannot be used by one of the participants. Kennel names with a breed suffix or the word "cat" are not entered. Swearwords are not registered, nor are protected brand names. It must be specified whether the kennel name is used as a prefix or as a suffix. As a prefix it is completed with 's, as a suffix a predicate (von, from, of etc.) must be in front of it in order to clearly separate the kennel name and animal name. The kennel name should not exceed 26 characters, since from the third generation on there is usually not enough space in the pedigree to write the name in full.

Cattery-Registration.com

Cattery-Registration.com wants to create the largest international directory and cover as many associations as possible. Registration is possible, either by the breeder himself or through his cat club. At the same time, this register not only lists names that are registered directly. Similar to a search engine, it also saves names that have already been found and blocks them for future registration. This is to prevent the unintentional use of existing names and thus confusion. In Germany the Felidae eV, CWG and Maine Coon Cats eV are members of the registry.

World Cat Federation (WCF)

Registration via the WCF is possible internationally. Here, too, registration takes place via the breeders' association. The name is initially not allowed by the WCF, but by the breeders' association. For a registration the breeder has to make 3 suggestions. The WCF checks again. Names of people (except your own) and names of races are excluded. A kennel name is protected for 20 years and cannot be assigned twice within the WCF. The entire name of a cat (first name + kennel name) must not exceed 25 characters. Kennel names are possible as both a prefix and a suffix.

Breeding names of horses (kennel names)

Horses receive a registered name through their kennel. Here one speaks of a kennel name . German riding horses cannot be registered. Registration for pony and small breed horses as well as other breeds, cold-blooded breeds and heavy warm-blooded horses is possible. Prefixes or suffixes for these horse species are registered by members via the German Equestrian Association at the Central Prefix Register in England. A registered name is protected for 30 years for all affiliated associations. The name may only consist of one word (apart from terms such as "von der" and the like). It must be at least 3 and at most 20 characters long. Apostrophes and hyphens are not permitted. A new name must differ from registered kennel names in at least three characters.
