life and work

After training as a businessman, Caspari, Gertrud Caspari's older brother, did not study art until he was 22 years old. From 1891 to 1893 he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Leipzig , 1893 to 1896 at the Art School Weimar and finally from November 2, 1897 at the Munich Art Academy under Paul Hoecker , with whom Bruno Paul , Wilhelm Schulz and a number of the artists of the later Scholle Association studied.

He published his first fairy tale illustrations as early as 1896. In the same year he began to work for the magazine Jugend (until 1906) and between 1897 and 1900 for the Simplicissimus . In addition, pictures and text vignettes were also created for the flying leaves , the funny leaves and the gazebo .

He also created commercial graphics such as bookplates , posters and book covers and illustrated literature by Otto Erich Hartleben , Kurt Martens , Alexander Moszkowski , Rudolf Presber , Richard Voss and Ernst von Wolhaben .

From 1906 he worked closely with his sister in the illustration of children's books.

Caspari's drawing style with clear lines was inspired by Aubrey Beardsley and is comparable to the Art Nouveau drawings by Thomas Theodor Heine or Heinrich Vogeler .
