Between death and life (original title: Les anneaux de Bicêtre) is a French television film from 1977 based on the novel The Bells of Bicêtre by Georges Simenon . The drama was directed by Louis Grospierre , who also wrote the screenplay. The main roles were played by Michel Bouquet and Claude Jade .

The editor Maugras is recovering from a stroke . The only support for him is the young nurse Blanche. Maugras begins to desire her, but for Blanche only the progress of her patient counts. Maugras jealously watches over the flirtation between the assistant doctor Gobet and Blanche. While Maugras monologues, Blanche, who constantly talks to him, brings him back to life. Maugras, who was used to determining things himself, is now dependent on the discreet sister who takes care of him and who, in the days of his most difficult trial to date, gets him to deal with the “real” questions to consider another point of view.
