Zybin NM-1 ( Russian Цыбин НМ-1 ) is the name of a Soviet experimental aircraft from the late 1950s. It was built to gain hands-on experience for the planned RSR strategic high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft . This should operate at a height of 30 kilometers and form the counterpart to the American SR-71 . Ultimately, however, only the NM-1 was implemented. The abbreviation NM stands for Nautschnaja model ( Russian Научная модель , research model).
development
The NM-1 was designed as a middle-decker with a trapezoidal support and tail unit of great depth. The fuselage frame was a tubular steel construction that was planked with aluminum and plywood. The wings were made entirely of aluminum. The landing gear was constructed in tandem, with the main frame going into the fuselage and the support wheels going into the fairing of the Mikulin AM-5 engines attached to the wing ends.
Pawel Zybin began with the first drafts for the RSR in 1953. In May 1955 his own design office (OKB-256) was opened and in 1957 the NM-1 was built. The first ground tows took place in late 1957 with a Pe-2 . Due to delays caused by difficulties with the engines and a lack of government support, the first flight with the pilot Amet-Chan Sultan did not take place until April 7, 1959. During the ten test flights that were subsequently carried out, there were impairments in the controllability due to the too small-sized tail unit. Since the problems with the AM-5 turbines could not be eliminated either, the tests were discontinued in 1960 and Zybin's design office was incorporated into Myasishchev's OKB-23. The experience gained was reflected, however, in other designs of Soviet high-speed jet aircraft of this era, such as the successor to the RSR, R-020 , which was also not realized , or the strategic bombers Sukhoi T-4 and Myasishchev M-50 .
The NM-1, which was no longer needed, was scrapped, individual assemblies such as the main landing gear fuselage segment were brought to the MAI .
