Arnold Skaaland (born January 21, 1925 in White Plains , New York , † March 13, 2007 ibid) was an American professional wrestler and wrestling manager.

Career

Prior to his wrestling career, Skaaland served in the Marines during World War II . Even before it led him to wrestling, he tried his hand at being an amateur boxer .

Arnold Skaaland started pro wrestling as Bobby Weaver in the 1950s. He quickly made a name for himself as an agile wrestler. In 1967 he won the WWWF US Tag Team title with Spiros Arion . In the early 1960s he got two chances for the NWA World Heavyweight Title , but he did not win against Pat O'Connor or Buddy Rogers . From the beginning Skaaland was part of the World Wide Wrestling Federation, the predecessor of today's WWE. He was also a shareholder in Capitol Wrestling Corporation, a company that owned WWWF.

After his active career, he managed the WWWF champions Bruno Sammartino and Bob Backlund . Skaaland ended the title reign of his protégé Backlund, who was in the Iron Sheik's Camel Clutch, by throwing a towel in December 1983 . From the 1980s until a few years ago, Skaaland worked as a WWWF official. He wrestled his last match in 1987 in a Battle Royal of Legends .

Skaaland's grave is located in the Roman Catholic Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, north of New York City .
