Zygochloa paradoxa is a grass species endemic to Australia and characterizes the grasslands north of Lake Eyre . It is the only species in the genus Zygochloa .

Zygochloa is a dioecious , perennial grass that forms dense clumps. The clumps are up to 1.5 meters high with a diameter of one meter. The stalks can be up to 200 centimeters high and are tube-like with a diameter of up to eight millimeters.

The leaves are short and are often shed when it is dry. The ligula is a ring of hair one millimeter long.

The inflorescences are dense, spherical spikes with short internodes . The ears are dimorphic and single standing. A spikelet consists of two flowers . The male ears are one to two centimeters in diameter. Their spikelets have two male flowers with three stamens each, a gynoeceum is missing. The female ears have a diameter of 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters. In their spikelets the lower flower is sterile, the upper has Staminodien and an ovary with a long, slender pen and feathered scar .

distribution

The species is endemic to Australia. It occurs mainly in the arid interior north of Lake Eyre . It mainly grows on the sand dunes, such as the Simpson Desert .
