Cystocentesis

The cystocentesis is carried out mainly in veterinary medicine puncture the bladder ( Cystis ). The urinary bladder puncture can be performed under sonographic control or blindly. The main indications are the collection of sterile urine for a urine culture or, as an emergency measure when the lower urinary tract is obstructed, the pressure relief of the bladder.

The cystocentesis is performed with a large-lumen cannula with an attached syringe through the abdominal wall in front of the pubic bone . An anesthesia is usually not required. Complications are rare, sometimes a harmless temporary admixture of blood in the urine is observed after the procedure .
