Bennie G. Thompson (born January 28, 1948 in Bolton , Mississippi ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He has been a member of the US House of Representatives since 1993 and he represents the 2nd Congressional constituency of the state of Mississippi, which consists of an area west and north of the state capital Jackson with the cities of Vicksburg , Greenville and Clarksdale .

Life

Bennie Thompson attended public schools in his home country and then Tougaloo College until 1968 . In 1972 he graduated from Jackson State University in Jackson . After that he was a teacher.

Bennie Thompson is married to London Johnson. The couple have a daughter and two grandchildren.

Political career

He was a member of Bolton City Council between 1969 and 1973 and was mayor of that city from 1973 to 1979. From 1980 to 1993 he was a member of the Hinds County Board of Supervisors . After the resignation of Congressman Mike Espy , who moved to the cabinet of President Bill Clinton as Secretary of Agriculture , Thompson was elected as his successor in the House of Representatives in Washington when the by-election was due . Thompson has been a member of this body since April 13, 1993, after being re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016. Its latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019.

Between 2006 and 2011, Thompson was chairman of the United States House Committee on Homeland Security , of which he subsequently served as an opposition leader ( ranking member ) for a while and as chairman again since 2019. Thompson is considered liberal. After the severe weather disasters on the Gulf Coast in 2005, he supported the rebuilding of the region. In addition to national security, his policy focuses on civil rights, agriculture, and education and health. Thompson has made headlines in recent years when he has been accused of expensive business trips. He is also said to have made other trips financed by a lobbyist who has now been arrested. However, there were no official investigations or investigations against him.
