William H. Hammett

William Henry Hammett (born March 25, 1799 in Don Manway , County Cork , Ireland , † July 9, 1861 in Washington County , Mississippi ) was an American politician . Between 1843 and 1845 he represented the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Hammett was born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States. There he settled in the state of Virginia . After studying theology, he was between 1832 and 1834 chaplain of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . He held the same position in the Virginia House of Representatives .

Hammett later moved to Princeton, Mississippi. He became a member of the Democratic Party , as its candidate he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in 1842 . At this point, the state of Mississippi had four seats in Congress for the first time , all of which were elected nationwide. Electoral districts were only established from the next elections . Jacob Thompson , Robert W. Roberts, and Tilghman Tucker were elected to Congress at the same time as Hammett .

Between March 4, 1843 and March 3, 1845, William Hammett only served one term in Congress. Then he retired from politics.
