W. Arthur Winstead

William Arthur Winstead (born January 6, 1904 in Philadelphia , Neshoba County , Mississippi , † March 14, 1995 in Philadelphia, Mississippi) was an American politician and represented the state of Mississippi as a member of the US House of Representatives .

Career

After attending public school Winstead went to the Clarke Memorial College in Newton and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa ( Alabama ). He then graduated from Mississippi Southern College in Hattiesburg in 1931 . He also dealt with agriculture. Between 1935 and 1942 he was the head of a school in Neshoba County.

Winstead was elected a Democrat in the 78th and ten subsequent Congresses. His term of office ran from January 3, 1943 to January 3, 1965. He ran again in 1964 for the 89th Congress, but failed. Then he decided to go into agriculture. He also later worked as a car salesman. During his time as a member of the House of Representatives, he was involved in the constitution of the Southern Manifesto , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions. He was also a commissioner for the Mississippi Department of Public Welfare between 1968 and 1971.

Arthur Winstead died on March 14, 1995 in Philadelphia. He was buried in Cedar Lawn Cemetery , Philadelphia.
