James Ronald Chalmers

James Ronald Chalmers (* 11. January 1831 in Lynchburg , Virginia ; † 9. April 1898 in Memphis , Tennessee ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and Brigadier General of Confederate in the Civil War .

Chalmers was born in 1831 to Joseph W. Chalmers , a lawyer and later US Senator for Mississippi . In 1835 he moved with his parents to Jackson , Tennessee, and in 1839 to Holly Springs , Mississippi. There he attended St. Thomas Hall and studied law at South Carolina College , now the University of South Carolina , where he graduated in 1851. In 1852 he was a member of the Constituent Assembly ("Constitutional Convention") and in 1853 as a lawyer, whereupon he also practiced in this profession. In 1858 he became a Mississippi District 7th District Attorney.

At the beginning of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army as a captain in March 1861 . He was promoted to Colonel of the 9th Mississippi Regiment in April and, at the suggestion of General Bragg , to Brigadier General in February 1862 and led his troops on April 6 and 7, 1862 at the Battle of Shiloh . In 1863 he was transferred to the cavalry, where he took command of General Forrest's corps . In May 1865 he surrendered to the Union troops .

After the end of the civil war he worked again as a lawyer and in politics. In 1876 and 1877 he was elected to the Mississippi Senate and as a representative of the Democrats in the 45th and 46th US Congresses from March 4, 1877 to March 3, 1881. Also by special agreement in the 47th Congress on March 4, 1881 until April 29, 1882, when he was replaced by John R. Lynch . For the 48th Congress he served again from June 25, 1884 to March 3, 1885. For the 49th Congress he was put up as a candidate, but lost his re-election.

He then retired from politics and went to Memphis, where he continued his legal practice until his death on April 9, 1898.
