Prentiss Lafayette Walker (born August 23, 1917 in Taylorsville , Smith County , Mississippi , † June 5, 1998 in Magee , Mississippi) was an American politician . Between 1965 and 1967 he represented the fourth constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Prentiss Walker public schools visited Las Cruces ( New Mexico ) and in his hometown of Taylorsville and in Mize (Mississippi). In 1936 he finished his education at Mississippi College in Clinton . During the Second World War he was a soldier in the US Army from 1944 and served in the Pacific region. After the war he ran a chicken farm. He had been the manager of a supermarket since 1937. He held this position until 1963. Politically, Walker was a member of the Republican Party . In 1960 he served on the board of the Mississippi State Hunting and Fishing Commission. In 1964 and 1968 he was a delegate to the respective Republican National Conventions .

In 1964 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth district of Mississippi , where he replaced the Democrat W. Arthur Winstead on January 3, 1965 . Walker was only the third Republican, who was elected in this district in the House of Representatives, and the first since Jason Niles in 1872. He gave up another nomination in 1966, he could only one term in until January 3, 1967 Congress pass . In the 1966 election, he ran unsuccessfully against incumbent James Eastland for his seat in the US Senate . In this election, Walker lost 27% to 65% of the vote. In 1968 he ran unsuccessfully for a return to the House of Representatives. His candidacy as an independent candidate for the US Senate in 1972 was equally unsuccessful. He then withdrew from politics. As a result, he returned to his private business. In addition to agricultural enterprises, this also included the real estate business.
