Elza Jeffords

Elza Jeffords (born May 23, 1826 in Ironton , Ohio , † March 19, 1885 in Vicksburg , Mississippi ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1885 he represented the second constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elza Jeffords attended public schools in Portsmouth, Ohio. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1847, he began to practice his new profession in this city. During the Civil War , Jeffords served between June 1862 and December 1863 with the Quartermaster of the Army of the Tennessee , a major union of the Union Army. After the war, he was an appellate judge in Mississippi between 1868 and 1869.

Politically, Elza Jeffords was a member of the Republican Party . In 1872 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention , where President Ulysses S. Grant was nominated for a further term. In 1882 Jeffords was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second district of Mississippi , where he replaced Van H. Manning on March 4, 1883 . Since he was defeated by the Democrat James B. Morgan in the elections of 1884 , Jeffords could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1885 .

Elza Jeffords died just two weeks after the end of his time in Congress in Vicksburg, where he was also buried.
