Guilford Wiley Wells (born February 14, 1840 in Conesus , Livingston County , New York , †  March 21, 1909 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the second constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Guilford Wells attended Genesee Wesleyan Seminary and College in Lima, New York State. During the civil war he rose in the Union Army from simple soldier to Lieutenant Colonel . After the war, Wells studied law at Columbian College , later George Washington University . After his admission as a lawyer in 1867, he began to work in Holly Springs in this profession.

Between 1870 and 1875 he was a federal attorney for the northern district of Mississippi state. Politically, Wells became a member of the Republican Party . In the 1875 congressional elections, he was elected an independent Republican to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the Mississippi Second Constituency . There he replaced Albert R. Howe on March 4, 1875 . Since he refused to run again in 1876, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1877 .

After his time in Congress, Guilford Wells was the American consul in Shanghai between 1877 and 1879 . After returning to the United States, he settled in Los Angeles , where he practiced as a lawyer. Wells died in Santa Monica in 1909 and was buried in Los Angeles.
