Larkin I. Smith (born June 26, 1944 in Poplarville , Mississippi , † August 13, 1989 in a plane crash in Mississippi) was an American politician . Between January and August 1989 he represented the fifth constituency of the state of Mississippi in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Larkin Smith attended Poplarville Elementary School and then until 1962 Poplarville High School . He then entered the police force. Between 1966 and 1972 he was the deputy chief of police in Pearl River County . He was then chief investigator in Harrison County until 1977 . Between 1977 and 1983 he served as the chief of police for the city of Gulfport . From January 1, 1984 to January 1, 1989, Smith served as the chief of police in Harrison County.

Smith was a member of the Republican Party . In the 1988 congressional elections he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the fifth district of Mississippi, where he replaced Trent Lott on January 3, 1989 . Smith could only exercise his mandate in Congress until August 13, 1989. That day he died in a private plane crash on the flight from Hattiesburg to Gulfport. The machine crashed in the De Soto National Forest .
