Chaffee County [ ˈtʃæfi ] is an administrative unit ( county ) in the central part of the US state Colorado . The county seat is Salida .

geography

The county is bordered clockwise from the north by Lake , Park , Fremont , Saguache , Gunnison and to the northwest to a small extent by Pitkin . Chaffee County is located within the Rocky Mountains amid the Sawatch and Mosquito ranges. Around 16,000 people live mostly in smaller settlements along the Arkansas River , which flows completely through Chaffee from north to south. The administrative district, created in 1879, is named after Jerome Bunty Chaffee ; a U.S. Senator from Colorado.

Several four-thousand-meter peaks , most of which bear the names of famous universities such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Oxford, can be found in the Sawatch mountain range.

According to the 2000 census , the county had 16,242 people. There were 6,584 households and 4,365 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.94 percent white, 1.58 percent African American, 1.09 percent Native American, 0.44 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 4.21 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.69 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.58 percent of the population.

Of the 6,584 households, 25.2 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.7 percent were married couples living together, 6.8 percent were single mothers. 33.7 percent were not families. 28.4 percent were single households and 11.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.77 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 19.7 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 17.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 113.6 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 116.2 males.

The median income for a household in the 34,368 USD , and the median income for a family was 42,043 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,770 versus $ 22,219 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,430. 11.7 percent of the population and 7.4 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 17.3 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 10.2 percent of the population aged 65 and over.

The ghost town of St. Elmo , listed in NRHP No. 79000577, about 55 km northeast of Salida. It is a popular destination for tourists, fishermen and hunters
