The Conejos County [ koˈnexos ] (from the Spanish for "rabbit" ), formerly Guadalupe, is a ( county ) in the south of the US state Colorado . The county seat is Conejos .
geography
The county was named after the river of the same name, which snakes through most of the district. On the western edge of the San Luis Valley , it extends from the Rio Grande (Rio Bravo) to the San Luis Mountains on the continental divide . Conejos is enclosed from the west in a clockwise direction to the east by the districts of Archuleta , Rio Grande , Alamosa and Costilla . The Rio Grande forms a natural district boundary with the latter. Finally, in the south, Conejos borders the administrative units of Rio Arriba and Taos in the US state of New Mexico .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 8,400 people. There were 2980 households and 2211 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.76 percent white, 0.21 percent African American, 1.69 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 21.50 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.61 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 58.92 percent of the population.
Of the 2,980 households, 38.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.3 percent were married couples living together, 12.7 percent were single mothers. 25.8 percent were not families. 23.7 percent were single households and 11.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.33 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 32.1 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 20.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 98.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 24,744 , and the median income for a family was $ 29,066. Males had a median income of $ 26,351 versus $ 20,200 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,050. 23.0 percent of the population and 18.6 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 28.2 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 17.3 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
