The Pitkin County is a county in the state of Colorado of the United States . The county seat is Aspen . It is connected to Gunnison County to the south by the McClure Pass . The county was named in honor of former Colorado governor Frederick Walker Pitkin .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 14,872 people. There were 6,807 households and 3,185 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.33 percent white, 0.53 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 1.12 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.37 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.34 percent were descended from two or more races. 6.54 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
