Mesa County is a county in the western US state of Colorado . The county seat is in Grand Junction .

geography

The county is part of the so-called Western Slopes of Colorado, a region in the western part of the state. It is the home of the Ute Indians. The Interstate 70 runs through the County of Utah coming to Denver . The county is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Garfield County , Pitkin County , Gunnison County , Delta County , Montrose County, and Grand County, Utah .

history

The county was separated from Gunnison County in 1883 . The name is derived from the Spanish mesa (German table ). It comes from the numerous table mountains in the area.

The county had a population of 116,255 as of the 2000 census . There were 45,823 households and 31,572 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.34 percent white, 0.46 percent African American, 0.91 percent Native American, 0.53 percent Asian, 0.10 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.67 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.99 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 10.02 percent of the total population.

Of the 45,823 households, 31.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 55.3 percent were married couples living together, 9.8 percent were single mothers. 31.1 percent were not families. 25.1 percent were single households and 10.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.94.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.0 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.0 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.2 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,864 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,009. Males had a median income of $ 32,316 versus $ 22,374 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,715. 10.2 percent of the population and 7.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 11.5 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 8.1 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
