Mode and rules
From this season on there was no more athletic relegation in the DEL, which is why the play-off mode also changed. A potential newcomer, who can still exist with fewer than 16 teams in the DEL from the 2nd Bundesliga , had to meet other conditions in addition to a 9,000 point target for the stadium in order to be accepted into the DEL. The current DEL teams have grandfathering as long as they belong to the DEL. The league management wants to create better financial security for their clubs.
Furthermore, from this season onwards, if there was a tie during the main round and in the play-offs, a five-minute extra time with 4 field players each was played in sudden death mode. Only then did a shootout follow .
Sporty
For the 2006/07 season, the DEG Metro Stars moved from the traditional ice rink on Brehmstrasse to the newly built ISS Dome , which now offers space for 13,400 spectators. This makes Düsseldorf the eighth DEL location after Hamburg, Cologne, Hanover, Krefeld, Nuremberg, Ingolstadt and Mannheim, which has received a multifunctional arena in recent years. DEG had previously won eight German championships on Brehmstrasse, most recently in 1996 .
As in the previous year, the bad position of the German national team in the IIHF world rankings meant that no German teams were qualified for the IIHF European Champions Cup . However, the German champion Eisbären Berlin accepted HC Davos' invitation to the renowned Spengler Cup , which they finished in December with just one victory, finishing fifth and last.
economy
Compared to the previous year, the clubs' budgets remained almost stable. The total budget of the clubs was € 70 million. If you disregard the Straubing Tigers, who had doubled their budget as a newcomer, the Düsseldorfers recorded the greatest increase that they could count on with a significant increase in the number of spectators in the new ISS dome. Once again, the DEL had a comparatively high amount of TV money from the pay TV broadcaster Premiere. As the main sponsor of the league, the Yellow Pages continued to advertise the boards in every stadium as well as on the official websites of the clubs.

The Adler Mannheim remained budget croesus of the league, the Hamburg Freezers maintained their second place just ahead of the DEG Metro Stars. The surprisingly strong 2005/06 season of the Hannover Scorpions brought the team a budget increase of 500,000 euros.

The WestLB Fair Play Trophy is the fairest team in a DEL season every year. For this purpose, the average penalty minutes of the clubs are converted to points, each game ban that is issued by the league company against a player is assessed with an additional point and added to the average penalty minutes. The fewest points with an average of 17.83 penalty minutes per game and a game suspension (= 18.83 total points) went to the Krefeld Penguins , who were the first to win the WestLB Fair Play Trophy. The Hannover Scorpions performed worst with a total of 39.1 points.

DEL All-Star Game 2007
The DEL All-Star Game 2007 was played on February 3, 2007 in the SAP Arena in Mannheim . It was the first All-Star Game in which a team of DEL European ice hockey stars competed against a DEL North America All-Star selection. The all-stars from North America won the game 12:10.
At the competitions, Jakub Ficenec from Team Europe was able to show the hardest shot with 159 km / h. The second competition was fought against each other by Adam Hauser for the North American team and Dimitrij Kotschnew for the European team. In the one-on-one shootout contest , three players each shot a total of 15 times at the opposing goal. Hauser had to reach behind him twice, Kotschnew did not concede a goal and thus prevailed. In the third Puck Control Relay competition , where targeting was important, the European relay team with Alexander Barta , Robert Hock , Tore Vikingstad , Ivan Čiernik and Petr Fical were ahead. The only event with a North American winner was the Speed Competition . Andy Roach ran the fastest time per lap.
