The reigning German champion Adler Mannheim played his first game of the season a day later with the DEG Metro Stars . The start of the play-off round in 2008 was scheduled for March 12, 2008. The final series began on April 13th and ended on April 20th with the Eisbären Berlin's third title win .

Attendees

According to the new cooperation agreement between the DEL and the German Ice Hockey Federation , there was no more athletic relegation in the past season. The Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg as champions of the 2nd Bundesliga had the opportunity to move up to the DEL. Since the Wolfsburg-based company meets the organizational and financial requirements for admission, the so-called 9000-point plan , the DEL shareholders' meeting approved the admission. In this plan, approved by the DEL and the ice hockey game operating company ESBG in 2006, a DEL stadium must receive at least 9000 points, which are awarded as follows: For each officially approved standing room, the respective team receives one point, seats are two points, VIP Places worth four points. If there is a video cube or a comparable display system as well as technical equipment for a television-compatible transmission, 1000 points are credited in each case.

Mode and rules

As a change compared to the mode in the previous season, the shareholders' meeting decided in June 2007 that in the event of a penalty shoot-out in the main round only three shooters per team would compete. Furthermore, the penalty shootout in the play-offs was abolished. It was, as in the NHL , in all games overtime up to " Sudden Death " and in contrast to the preliminary round games in overtime again played with 5-on-5. In addition, it was decided in February 2008 that the last two match days of the preliminary round and the play-off games would be held according to the "4 referee" principle with an additional main referee, which was mainly due to the ongoing criticism of referee performance from the clubs and the number of fans has declined this season.

The 2007/08 DEL season should initially be the last without a sporting relegation. At its 69th shareholders' meeting in November 2007, the league decided to reintroduce relegation for the 2008/09 season , but the game operating company ESBG vetoed this proposal in March 2008. Thus, the DEL remains a closed league, with the second division champions of the 2007/08 season , however, another team has the chance to advance to the DEL. Should the champions of the 2nd Bundesliga not meet the requirements of the 9000-point plan, the remaining second division teams have the chance to receive the last starting place for the 2008/09 season in an application process .

Sporty

In March 2007, reports of a possible move of the Füchse Duisburg to Stuttgart for economic reasons came up for the first time . On April 26, 2007 the main shareholder Pape announced that he would remain in Duisburg, because the city of Stuttgart had not been able to manage the to raise the necessary sponsorship money in the amount of 5 million euros. Thus, in 2005 , Spielbetriebsgesellschaft, which was spun off from EV Duisburg , will also appear in Duisburg in the 2007/08 season under the name “Die Füchse”, but the future of the club is still open.

For the last time the home venue of the Eisbären Berlin: The Wellblechpalast

In the 2007/08 season the Eisbären Berlin played their games for the last time in the traditional Wellblechpalast , before the following season the team moved to the 17,000-seat O₂ World . In the Wellblechpalast, SC Dynamo Berlin was GDR champion 15 times , the successor club of SC Dynamo, the Eisbären Berlin, won their first four all-German titles in their home stadium: the German championships in 2005 , 2006 and 2008 as well as the German ice hockey cup in 2008 .

As in previous years, the bad position of the German national team in the IIHF world rankings meant that no German teams were qualified for the IIHF European Champions Cup . However, the German champions from Mannheim accepted HC Davos' invitation to the prestigious Spengler Cup , which they finished third in December, four points behind the winning team Canada .

For the first time, however, the result of the season was decisive for the newly introduced Champions Hockey League . The champion of the German ice hockey league is automatically qualified for the group phase, the preliminary round winner competes in a qualifying tournament against the Swiss and the Slovak main round winners. If the master of the regular season is identical to the winner of the play-offs , the runner-up in the preliminary round automatically moves up.

Transfers

There were some interesting transfers and deals before the season. The master Adler Mannheim only strengthened his squad selectively, with Michael Hackert from the Frankfurt Lions another offensive force was committed, and a replacement for Jean-Marc Pelletier, who had migrated to Hamburg , was found in the Cologne goalkeeper Adam Hauser . The only key player from the championship season to leave the Adler was the Canadian Nathan Robinson , who put on his ice skates for the Eisbären Berlin in the 2007/08 season. The runner-up Nuremberg Ice Tigers initially had to compensate for several departures. Center Martin Jiranek ended his professional career at the age of 37, and key players Justin Mapletoft and Jame Pollock migrated to the National Hockey League to the Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals, respectively . The Ice Tigers signed Ahren Spylo from Hamburg Freezers and national player Björn Barta from ERC Ingolstadt as replacements . In addition, with national goalkeeper Dimitrij Kotschnew and the NHL experienced center Sean Brown, two other stars of the league moved to Franconia .

Tino Boos left the Kölner Haie before the season for Hannover Scorpions

The other clubs in the league also relied on former players of the National Hockey League this season, above all Stanley Cup winner Norm Maracle , who moved from HK Awangard Omsk to the Iserlohn Roosters, and the Cologne new signing Todd Warriner , who had previously transferred 450 NHL games, including for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Tampa Bay Lightning , had completed. Other former NHL legionnaires who switched to the German Ice Hockey League for the 2007/08 season were Peter Ratchuk , Brandon Reid (both DEG Metro Stars), Brandon Smith (Eisbären Berlin), Eric Boguniecki , Scott Ferguson (both ERC Ingolstadt), Jeff Heerema , Jason Marshall , Richie Regehr (all Frankfurt Lions), Chad Wiseman (Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg), Andy Delmore (Hamburg Freezers), Mike Green , Chris Herperger (both Hannover Scorpions), Pat Kavanagh (Iserlohn Roosters) as well as Éric Meloche and Wade Skolney , who were hired by the Straubing Tigers. In addition, the two young German players Felix Schütz and Stefan Langwieder returned to Germany from their junior years in North America.

The DEG Metro Stars signed Andrew Hedlund , who was already known to the German fans from his involvement with the Krefeld Penguins. With Igor Alexandrow , another player switched back to the DEL, who had previously been on the ice with the Nürnberg Ice Tigers, the Kölner Haien, the Hannover Scorpions, the Augsburger Panthers as well as the Iserlohn Roosters and the Adler Mannheim. In the 2007/08 season he played for the Füchse Duisburg. Ilya Vorobjow also returned from Russia to the DEL to play for the Frankfurt Lions. There were also significant player changes within the German Ice Hockey League before the season. The two national players Lasse Kopitz (now Frankfurt Lions) and Oliver Jonas (now Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg) left the Kölner Haie, as did Tino Boos , who left the Domstadt team after seven years for the Hannover Scorpions. As a replacement for Adam Hauser who had migrated, the Cologne team also signed goalkeeper Travis Scott , who had also stood between the posts for the Los Angeles Kings in the NHL. International player John Tripp also moved from ERC Ingolstadt to the Hamburg Freezers.

Also during the season a number of new players were signed, including the NHL veteran John Slaney , who moved from the AHL to the Kölner Haien. The people of Domstadt also attracted attention when they signed national goalkeeper Robert Müller from Adler Mannheim in December . Müller had previously been transferred to the bottom EV Duisburg on loan from the champions. The Iserlohn Roosters signed striker Rob Valicevic , who had already played 191 NHL games. After the weak start to the season, the Adler Mannheim were also forced to retrofit, so that the Canadian Dan McGillis and the Swede Daniel Johansson were signed for the defense. The DEG Metro Stars reacted by signing national player Anton Bader from the Straubing Tigers to the long-lasting injury misery, after the injury of Jean-Marc Pelletier in Hamburg Philippe Sauvé was signed by the Iowa Stars from the AHL.

The Busch doping incident

Florian Busch came under fire for a refused doping test

In April it became known that Florian Busch , striker of the Eisbären Berlin , initially refused an unannounced doping test in March and only did it a few hours later. However, the DEB did not consider the case a doping case, only a missed test. As a result, Busch was sentenced by the association to a fine of 5000 euros and 56 hours of community service in the association.

The National Anti-Doping Agency NADA stated a short time later that it could not accept the DEB judgment in this form, since according to the NADA statutes, a refused doping test is to be assessed as a positive test and thus has to be proven with a ban of at least one year. The case was particularly explosive when Florian Busch of all people scored the decisive goal in the DEL final of the polar bears against the Kölner Haie on April 20. One day later, NADA forwarded the case to the world anti-doping agency WADA , while DEL and DEB declared that for them the case was closed with the verdict against the insightful Bush. Since the IIHF granted approval, Florian Busch will also play for the German national team during the 2008 Ice Hockey World Championship in Canada . The WADA did not consider the case against Bush a message from the IIHF to complete, but shares the view of the NADA that the punishment of the DEB is insufficient, but the behavior of Busch's a lock must entail.

On May 7, 2008, the Federal Ministry of the Interior blocked the payment of the annual funding of 600,000 euros to the German Ice Hockey Federation with immediate effect due to the DEB's disregard of the sanctions guidelines. In addition, on April 18, it submitted a corresponding application to the responsible federal administration office to reclaim tax funds.

On June 24, 2009, the International Court of Justice for Sports ( CAS) imposed a two-year ban on Busch, which is due to end on February 21, 2011. However, it is not yet clear whether the DEL will take over the ban.

economy

Compared to the previous year, the clubs' budgets remained almost stable, the average budget was € 5.24 million, which was a slight increase compared to the previous year. The total budget of the clubs was increased due to the expansion of the league by another team from € 70 to € 78.7 million. Once again, DEL had a comparatively large amount of TV money from the pay TV broadcaster Premiere. As the main sponsor of the league, the Yellow Pages continued to advertise the boards in every stadium as well as on the official websites of the clubs, the referees appear with a lettering from the pharmaceutical company taxofit .

The Adler Mannheim remained budget croesus of the league, but the DEG Metro Stars closed up to the German champions with up to 300,000 euros due to the financial success in the first year of the ISS Dome . EV Duisburg remained at the bottom of this ranking, followed by the Augsburger Panther , who had to narrow their previous year's budget. The strong season of the Sinupret Ice Tigers , which was crowned by reaching the finals, brought the team a budget increase of 500,000 euros, as did the Straubing Tigers , which have now established themselves financially in the DEL.

Before the season, Günter Papenburg , owner of the Hannover Scorpions, threatened to close the TUI Arena that he owned and to sell the DEL license for the 2008/09 season. The reason for this was an ongoing dispute with the city of Hanover , which wanted to have repaid a construction grant of 2.5 million euros. Since the hall, which was opened for the World Exhibition Expo 2000 , only rarely had an audience capacity of 10,500 and the association was constantly suffering losses, Papenburg is said to have not been ready to follow the demands of the city.

In January, Günther Hertel , sole shareholder of Sinupret Ice Tigers, announced that the future of the club in Nuremberg was in danger. Hertel said: “It doesn't look good economically. I don't want to put any more private money into the Ice Tigers anymore. In the next two weeks we will try everything to secure the future of the club - if we fail, there will be no more ice hockey in Nuremberg next year. ” A few days later, Hertel defused the situation and was more confident, but continued to emphasize that the club needs new sponsors to close the gaps in the budget.

Preliminary round

As in the previous season, the teams met each other four times per season this season. The six best-placed teams automatically moved into the play-offs, the four teams in positions seven to ten fight for the play-offs in a qualification after the main round, for clubs from position eleven the season ends after the main round.

September 2007

On September 6, 2007 the fourteenth season of the DEL opened with the 6: 3 victory of the Kölner Haie against the Hamburg Freezers.

The first table leaders of the new season were the Krefeld Pinguine, who had clearly defeated the promoted EHC Wolfsburg 4-0 on the first match day. The champions Adler Mannheim lost their opening game against the DEG Metro Stars 2: 4. On the second match day, a new goal record was set at 10: 9 for the Nürnberg Ice Tigers in Iserlohn, with the 3: 6 defeat against the Berliner Eisbären the Adler Mannheim made their false start to the season perfect. This negative series continued in the following weeks, so that the German champions spent large parts of the first third of the season in the table cellar. The Eisbären, on the other hand, got off to a tailor-made start to the season, with six wins in seven games, the capitals finished second behind the Frankfurt Lions, who won six of their first nine games and collected 19 points. Third place went to last year's finalist Nürnberg Ice Tigers, who only suffered their first defeat in Straubing on matchday five.

On the other hand, the start of the season for DEG Metro Stars was mixed, which was mainly due to a persistent loss of injuries in the team. After Tore Vikingstad and Daniel Kreutzer , defender Robert Dietrich , another top performer, was seriously injured. Born in Kazakhstan, he had to take a break for several months with a fracture of his right ankle.

The Kölner Haie announced a cooperation with Stanley Cup winner Anaheim Ducks . Initially, an exchange between coaches and cooperation in the scouting department are being considered, the obligation of players who have not yet been able to prevail at the Ducks, as well as a possible guest appearance by the Californians in Cologne is also conceivable.

Dismissed after five years in Duisburg: head coach Dieter Hegen

October 2007

The leaders from Frankfurt and Berlin continued their winning streak in October, another winner was the Hamburg Freezers, who were able to improve to third place in the table with 32 points by the end of the month. The Kölner Haie were also on the rise, winning the top game of the 11th matchday against leaders Frankfurt Lions 4: 3 in a penalty shootout. On the same day of the match, Adler Mannheim, who were still weak away from home, were able to establish contact with midfield for the first time with a 5-1 win against bottom group Füchse Duisburg.

On October 9th, the Füchse Duisburg announced the first coach release of the current season, coach Dieter Hegen was on leave until further notice, the training was taken over by the sporting director Franz Fritzmeier senior , whose debut on the bench, however, was thorough when his team went 4-0 in Wolfsburg failed. Two weeks later, former national player Peter Draisaitl was introduced as Hegen's successor .

On the other hand, the Iserlohn Roosters were on the upward trend, winning their fifth consecutive victory against the Hannover Scorpions on matchday 15. As they got the upper hand against league leaders Frankfurt a week later, the Eisbären Berlin replaced them. Finally, the bottom of the table from Duisburg, who signed national goalkeeper Robert Müller from the German champions , caused a surprise . This was initially done with the option that Müller should return to the eagles immediately, should this become necessary during the course of the season. In December 2007, however, the Kölner Haie and Adler Mannheim finally agreed on an immediate move from Robert Müller to the cathedral city.

November 2007

At the beginning of November the Adler Mannheim got better and better, with the 5: 4 against leaders from Berlin they landed their third win in a row on matchday 21, which slowly moved the champions back towards the play-off places . After a one-week break due to the Germany Cup 2007 , the league started the next phase of the season on November 13th with two early games on the 31st and 38th match day. In the so-called “Traditional Night”, the Adler Mannheim competed in the SAP Arena in special jerseys without advertising in the design of the first Bundesliga season after the rise in 1978/79 against the Kölner Haie, the champions won 3-1 and continued their upward trend away.

At the DEG Metro Stars, on the other hand, the staff carousel was continued: Due to the bad start to the season, coach Slavomír Lener was dismissed with immediate effect, his successor was Lance Nethery on an interim basis . After a four-month break from illness, however, captain Daniel Kreutzer returned to the Düsseldorf squad.

The Hannover Scorpions, on the other hand, suffered a severe setback in the race for the direct play-off places due to the injury of their striker Jonas Lanier . In the game against the Iserlohn Roosters Lanier crashed into the goal and suffered a rupture of the syndesmosis ligament, after which he had to sit out for three months. The month was also sobering for the Hamburg Freezers. After fourth place in the table on matchday 19, the Hanseatic League could only win two out of eight games by the end of the month and fell to 9th place. The Eisbären Berlin (55 points) remained ahead of the table, now ahead of the Kölner Haien (53) and the Frankfurt Lions (50). The Nürnberg Ice Tigers kept up with the top trio with 48 points, Master Adler Mannheim made it to fifth place.

As a consequence of the poor performance, Ron Kennedy in Ingolstadt and Erich Kühnhackl in Straubing were also removed from their offices. Kennedy's successor was the multiple Stanley Cup winner Mike Krushelnyski , on November 29th Bob Manno succeeded Kühnhackl in Straubing.

December 2007

National player Tomáš Martinec played his 500th appearance in the DEL on December 23

The downward slide of the DEG Metro Stars continued in December, which was partly to blame for the ongoing injury misery. Robert Dietrich, who had just recovered, broke the Volkmann triangle in his other ankle and fell out again for around eight weeks. Key player Tore Vikingstad also suffered a tear in the adductor area at 3: 4 in Hanover. The Hamburg Freezers were also still in the crisis and had to do without their defender Martin Walter , who broke the scaphoid bone during training.

The Eisbären Berlin, on the other hand, consolidated the table lead after a clear 7-2 win over Mannheim and a 6-5 after penalty shoot-out in a true ice hockey thriller on matchday 34 against Hannover. On the other hand, national goalkeeper Robert Müller celebrated a failed debut, who lost 3-0 with his Haien in Augsburg on the same day.

After a 4-7 home defeat, Adler Mannheim , which was shining this season due to a lack of constancy, reacted and dismissed coach Greg Poss , who had just extended his contract with the German champions in November. Poss had won the cup and the championship with the Adler in the preseason, 18 wins out of 17 defeats, however, were not enough for the club's chairmen to meet the club's high standards. Dave King , who had previously trained the Hamburg Freezers, was introduced as his successor . Assistant Teal Fowler stayed with the club. Kings made their debut 7-2 against the still desolate Düsseldorf team, while international Tomáš Martinec celebrated his 500th DEL appearance.

The Eisbären Berlin started the new year as leaders of the table after they had prevailed 3-2 after a penalty shoot-out in Hamburg on Christmas Day after falling 2-0 down and could no longer be caught with 78 points. The Frankfurt Lions finished the calendar year with 71 points in second place, followed by Nuremberg (69) and Cologne (68).

January 2008

At the beginning of the year, last Duisburg dismissed coach Peter Draisaitl after only two months of engagement, and his successor was the previous assistant coach Karel Lang . The decision of the foxes was the seventh trainer dismissal of the current DEL season. Three weeks later, the Füchse announced that they wanted to turn the transitional solution into a permanent solution.

The Nürnberg Ice Tigers started a race to catch up with a clear 8: 3 in the top match against leaders Eisbären Berlin, which should lead them to the top of the table by the end of the month. The Eisbären also announced beforehand that striker Christoph Gawlik would be out until the end of the season with a tear in a cartilage lip on his shoulder blade. Hamburg coach Bill Stewart came under further pressure , who after a sustained series of two wins out of eight games, grandly announced that he would cut the income of the players in the event of persistent failure and thus gambled away the last credit from the fans. The club management strengthened the coach's back and extended the contract with the Canadian for another year until the end of the 2008/09 season.

The Adler Mannheim, on the other hand, made up ground, advancing to fifth place with nine wins in a row, the series should not end again until mid-February with a defeat against the Iserlohn Roosters. The Frankfurt Lions, on the other hand, fell back to fourth place behind the Kölner Haie after surprising defeats against Düsseldorf, Wolfsburg and in the top game against their table neighbors from Nuremberg.

February 2008

Dave McLlwain secured the Kölner Haien with his decisive goal in extra time against the Füchse Duisburg the early entry into the play-offs.

February began with bad news for the Kölner Haie. National defender Mirko Lüdemann suffered a double torn bundle in the oblique abdominal muscles in the game against the bottom line Duisburg and was out for several weeks.

After the All-Star Game and international break due to the four-nation tournament in Lausanne, the league resumed playing on February 12. For the league leaders Nuremberg, the 52nd matchday began with the expected victory over the Füchse Duisburg, but the broken metatarsus of attacker Scott King , who is not available to the Ice Tigers for several weeks , weighed heavier . Three days later, the team also lost the top game against the Kölner Haie, but a clear 7: 3 against Adler Mannheim further cemented the table lead. Eagle striker Jason Jaspers suffered a broken jaw and will be out until the end of the season.

After Nuremberg and Berlin, the Kölner Haie finally secured an early entry into the play-offs with a win against the bottom line Duisburg on matchday 55, the Frankfurt Lions followed two days later with a win against the same opponent. Meanwhile, the DEG Metro Stars were on a clear play-off course again, taking their eighth win of the last nine games against the Straubing Tigers and thus occupying eighth place. With the 6: 4 in the top match against Berlin, the Nürnberg Ice Tigers made an important step towards the preliminary round championship, which is equivalent to a qualification place for the Champions Hockey League 2008/09 .

The Hamburg Freezers could again hope for a pre-play-off place, who impressively reported back in the race with a surprisingly high 6-2 against the Kölner Haie and came within one point of the Krefeld Penguins. For the Domstadters, however, it was the biggest loss of the season.

March 2008

In March the Iserlohn Roosters (5th place) and Adler Mannheim (6th) completed the field of play-offs ahead of schedule. Meanwhile, Nürnberg secured the preliminary round championship on the 58th matchday with the last necessary point by a 3: 4 defeat after penalty shoot-out against the Hanover Scorpions, who in turn were able to participate in the play-off qualification. The Hamburg Freezers (7th), the DEG Metro Stars (9th) and ERC Ingolstadt (10th) qualified as further teams for the pre-play-offs.

Closing table

A team was awarded three points for a win after normal playing time, if the game was tied after 60 minutes, both teams received one point, and the winner of the extra time or after a necessary penalty shootout was awarded an additional point. If a team lost in regular time, it received no points.

The first place in the main round, the Sinupret Ice Tigers, competed against the badly placed qualification winner, the DEG Metro Stars, the second, the Eisbären Berlin, faced the better placed qualification winner, the Hamburg Freezers . The third quarter-final game was played by the third-placed Kölner Haie against the sixth-placed Adler Mannheim, while in the fourth game the fourth, the Frankfurt Lions, met the fifth, the Iserlohn Roosters.

In the first game of the series, Nürnberg was able to take the lead after three and a half minutes through Ahren Spylo , but then it was visibly difficult against the Düsseldorf team. The Metro Stars were able to equalize a lead of the Ice Tigers by Kreutzer and Wright twice ( Leeb scored for the IceTigers in the meantime) before Andre Savage scored the decisive 3-2 for the champions of the regular season. In the second game, too, the Nuremberg team took an early lead, but in front of only 6,112 spectators, the Düsseldorf team equalized with Reid. Patrick Reimer finally became the match winner with two goals in the final third for the Metro Stars. The third game was similar, again it was Reimer and Peter Boon who converted a Nuremberg lead into the 2-1 final result within 58 seconds. The second home game in the ISS Dome was ultimately determined by the Metro Stars over long stretches and brought the preliminary round champions to the verge of elimination from the quarter-finals with a 6-3. In the fifth game of the quarter-final series, the Ice Tigers finally lost for the fourth time in a row, so that the champions of the regular season had to be eliminated in the quarter-finals for the first time in the history of the DEL. The DEG Metro Stars, on the other hand, advanced to the semi-finals as winners of the qualifying round, while the Nürnberg Ice Tigers were first in the main round and qualified for the 2008/09 Champions Hockey League qualifying tournament.

Polar bears Berlin - Hamburg Freezers 4: 1 2: 4 7: 4 6: 1 6: 1 4: 3 a.d. - - [1: 3]

The first surprise of the play-offs was the Hamburg Freezers in the first game of the series, who were able to take a 3-0 lead in Berlin with goals from Marc Beaucage , Brad Smyth and François Fortier . Although the polar bears came close to one goal again in the following period, Benoît Gratton ensured the decision with a hit into the empty goal in the final minute. After this surprising opening defeat, however, the table runner-up in the preliminary round appeared stronger in the following games and was able to achieve three clear wins in a row. In the fifth game of the series, the Freezers initially took a 2-0 lead, André Rankel was able to equalize in the second third with two overpaid goals. The Berlin team was also able to equalize the renewed Hamburg leadership by Aab in regular time, so that the game had to be decided in extra time. There the polar bear Frank Hördler made the semi-finals of the capital city perfect with his goal after 2:40 minutes.

Cologne Sharks - Adler Mannheim 4: 1 4: 3 1: 2 5: 4 a.d. 4: 3 a.d. 4: 1 - - [3: 1]

In the first game, Adler Mannheim were already 4-0 down in the Kölnarena, but Ronny Arendt , François Méthot and Pascal Trepanier were able to bring the defending champions back to one goal, but it wasn't enough to equalize. After a goalless first third, Kölner Haie took the lead again against the Adler in the second game of the series, but Tomáš Martinec and Rick Girard were able to turn the game around in the middle third. After regular playing time, it was 4: 4 in the third game between the two opponents, so the game had to be decided in extra time. Only after 168 minutes and 16 seconds did Philip Gogulla make the decision in the sixth overtime with the 5-4 winner. The game thus replaced the record set by the Frankfurt Lions and Iserlohn Roosters just two days earlier as the longest DEL game of all time: The second game in the SAP Arena also had to be decided in extra time, after the Adler a 3-2 -Martinec was able to equalize the lead of the Cologne team seven seconds before the end. This time, however, Todd Warriner made sure that the Haie scored a 4-3 winning goal in the first extra time, and they were able to take the lead 3-1 in the series. The Haie won the fifth game, the defending champion from Mannheim was only able to compensate for Cologne's 1-0 lead by Ivan Čiernik , after two goals by Tallaire and Furchner the game was decided, the 4-1 was scored again by Čiernik a hit in the empty goal.

Despite a 3-1 lead by Iserlohn in the meantime, the Frankfurt Lions finally made it to the semi-finals. In the first game of the quarter-finals between Frankfurt and Iserlohn, the Lions were able to catch up 1: 3 through Ilja Vorobjow and Chris Taylor just before the end of regular time. After only two minutes of extra time, Richie Regehr scored the winning goal for Hessen. Also in the second game, the Roosters gave up a two-goal lead, so that after 60 minutes of play the extra time had to be decided again. It was only after 117: 45 minutes that DEL top scorer Michael Wolf scored the decisive 3: 2 for Iserlohn, which was the longest game in DEL history to date and replaced the record set in the qualification in Hanover. The third game in the series also had to be decided in extra time, as it was again 3: 3 after regular time. After just 42 seconds, Ryan Ready scored for Iserlohn and brought the Sauerland region into the lead for the first time in the series. The fourth game was finally won by the surprise fifth in the preliminary round with a 5-1 win, but missed making the decision in the following game in Frankfurt. The Roosters were able to equalize a Frankfurt lead twice, but Jason Young's hit in the final third brought the decision for the Lions. The Frankfurters were able to win the sixth game clearly and thus equalized the series. In the last decisive game in Frankfurt, the Lions finally defeated the Roosters 4: 3. After the Hessians led 4-1, the Sauerlanders came back 4-3 shortly before the end, but the Roosters couldn't use the majority game in the last minutes to equalize.

Semifinals

As in the final, the winner was played in the " Best of Five " mode. The semi-final series began on April 1, the decisive fifth game in both games took place on April 10.

The pairings were based on the placements of the quarter-final winners in the main round. The best placed quarter-final winner, the Eisbären Berlin, played against the worst placed, the DEG Metro Stars, while the second best placed Kölner Haie met the third best placed in the main round, the Frankfurt Lions. The better placed team got the first home right.

In the first game in the ISS Dome, DEG was leading 3-0 after just 23 minutes, but the Eisbären managed to equalize 3: 3 after a chase to catch up. It was only 99 seconds before the end of the game that Robert Dietrich was able to make the Düsseldorf victory perfect with an outnumbered goal. The third game, however, had to be decided in extra time, as both teams had scored three goals again in regular time. The alleged Berlin 4: 3 by Pederson was not recognized in the third period, only in the 14th minute of extra time Deron Quint scored the winning goal for the polar bears. In the fourth game, the Dusseldorf team went 4-0 up after two-thirds, and it wasn't until the third period that the Berliners scored their first goal through Sven Felski . He received a game misconduct penalty after a stick hit against Reid, Patrick Reimer used the subsequent majority to mark the 5-1 final score. In the decisive game, André Rankel increased after a strong second third and goals from Florian Busch and Richard Mueller in the 53rd minute for Berlin to 3-0, a Düsseldorf goal by Brandon Reid could not prevent the polar bears from reaching the final. After the preliminary round, which was far below expectations, the DEG Metro Stars managed to end the season in a more forgiving way as the winners of the playoff qualification with their entry into the semi-finals.

Just two days after the seventh quarter-final game, the Frankfurt Lions suffered a clear 7-1 defeat in the first semi-final game in the Kölnarena against more rested Kölner Haie, but the Hessians were able to make the second game more even. Although the guests from Cologne took the lead with a one-two punch after just two minutes, the Frankfurt team scored a goal through Jeff Ulmer just two minutes later . The Lions managed to equalize a Cologne lead twice, the last time only 66 seconds before the end of the game. Layne Ulmer equalized the 4-3 lead of the Domstadters. With his goal in extra time, Chris Taylor finally equalized the Hessians in the semi-final series. The goals from Philip Gogulla and Taylor also equalized the third game after 60 minutes, while Ivan Čiernik scored the winning goal for Haie in extra time . In the fourth game, the Lions were already leading 4-1 in the final third, but Kamil Piroš and Ivan Čiernik again caused tension with their two follow-up goals . The decisive fifth game was initially considered by the Cologne team, but they failed to take the lead. This only succeeded in the second third, when Stéphane Julien was able to defeat the strong Frankfurt goalkeeper Ian Gordon for the first time. In the final third, the Frankfurters equalized twice, only in the 58th minute did Mirko Lüdemann score the winning goal for the Haie, who were able to move into a DEL final for the sixth time.

WestLB Fair Play Trophy

The WestLB Fair Play Trophy is the fairest team in a DEL season every year. For this purpose, the average penalty minutes of the clubs are converted to points, each game ban that is issued by the league company against a player is assessed with an additional point and added to the average penalty minutes. The fewest points with an average of 17.27 penalty minutes per game and no game suspension went to the Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg , who were thus the winners of the WestLB Fair Play Trophy. The Iserlohn Roosters did the worst with a total of 27.95 points.

Most valuable player in the playoffs

Steve Walker from Eisbären Berlin was chosen as Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the DEL Playoffs 2008 . From the semifinals, the Canadian ran open with a special splint despite a cruciate ligament tear in his left knee at the end of the main round and scored two game-winning goals, one of them in the third final game against the Kölner Haie. In a total of nine playoff appearances, Walker was able to score three goals and five assists , so 21% of his 14 shots fired ended up in the opposing goal. In the final round, the striker also received four penalty minutes.

referee

Professional Referee Rick Looker

The following main referees were used in the 2007/08 season:

  • Roland Aumüller
  • Heiko Dahle
  • Alfred Hascher
  • Georg Jablukov
  • Stephan Kadow
  • Steffen Klau
  • Raik van Gameren

* Professional referee

As in previous years, the DEL participated in the IIHF Referee Exchange Program . In addition to the previous representatives Martin Reichert and Richard Schütz, the German professional referee Daniel Piechaczek also took part in this program for the first time in the 2007/08 season . In return, 17 DEL games were conducted by ten different foreign referees. They included Milan Minář, Radek Husička (both Czech Republic ), Danny Kurmann, Brent Reiber (both Switzerland ), Sören Persson, Marcus Vinnerborg (both Sweden ), Jari Levonen, Sami Partanen, (both Finland ) and Peter Ország ( Slovakia ).

Again and again this season there was criticism of referee decisions, which sparked a discussion about the quality of referees in the German Ice Hockey League. One reaction to this was the decision of the DEL to hold the last two match days of the preliminary round and the play-off games according to the "4 referee" principle with an additional main referee. There were also repeated calls for more professional referees in Germany.

TV rights

The TV rights of the DEL lay in the 2007/2008 season in the Pay TV transmitter premiere , the weekly least two batches transferred (usually on Thursdays at 19:30 and Sundays at 14:30). In the play-offs at least one game was broadcast in each round, and all games from the semi-finals. ARD , ZDF , the third programs, ProSiebenSat.1 Media , n-tv and some regional broadcasters have post-exploitation rights. In addition, game summaries have been broadcast on the “DEL-TV” platform on the Internet since the 2005/06 season , with the image material being composed of stadium TV and premiere.

DEL All-Star Game 2008

The Freiberg Arena, venue of the DEL All-Star Games 2008

The 10th DEL All-Star Game took place on February 2nd, 2008 for the first time outside of a DEL location in the Freiberg Arena in Dresden . Again a selection of the best European DEL players competed against a selection of the best North American DEL players. A special feature was that this year one player from the host team, the Dresdner Eislöwen from the Oberliga , could be selected for the selection.

This year, too, a skill competition was held before the game, in which the players put their skills to the test in various disciplines. Jakub Ficenec had the hardest slap shot at 167 km / h, in the goalie contest both Robert Müller from Team Europe and Norm Maracle did not concede for the North Americans. Europe won the season ahead of North America. Andy Roach was named the fastest skater in the following competition.

The game, directed by Heiko Awizus, was finally won by the North American team in front of 3,400 spectators with 16:14 against the Europeans. For Most Valuable Player was Michal Mařík (Europe) and Ryan Ramsay (North America) selected.

As part of the All-Star game, DEL managing director Gernot Tripcke stated that he could certainly imagine Dresden as a future DEL location, as the economic environment with the new arena was there. Tripcke also emphasized, however, that entry into the highest German professional league can only be achieved through sport. The local Dresdner Eislöwen had been relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga the year before, but managed to return directly to the second-highest division in the 2007/08 season .
