Mode and rules

The 2005/06 season was the last of the DEL with a relegated sport for the time being. Starting with the 2006/07 season, this should ensure that the clubs and sponsors can plan ahead. Therefore, it was especially important for the smaller and less financially strong clubs not to lose the play-downs at the end of the season. A potential climber had to qualify for the DEL from the following season in terms of sport, economics and infrastructure. These regulations, which were laid down in a cooperation agreement between the DEL, the ice hockey game operating company and the German ice hockey association , also triggered protests from the fans of some DEL clubs.

In contrast to the sporting descent, the controversial interpretation of IIHF rule 554c has not been abolished. Referees continued to impose a two-minute penalty if a player shot the puck over the boards. No change was made with regard to the quota of foreigners. Each club was still allowed to license twelve foreign players, but only use eleven per game.

The existing rule that the dark jersey had to be the home jersey was no longer handled as strictly as of the 2005/06 season. Each team had to report at the beginning of the season which jersey should be worn in front of their own audience. The away team then had to adjust to it.

The funding license regulation has not been changed compared to the previous season. As before, German outfield players who were born after May 1, 1982 and German goalkeepers who were not yet born on May 1, 1980, could be sent to a team in a lower league with a sponsorship license in order to gain match practice there . Every DEL team was required to have at least four such players under contract.

Sporty

The pre-season salary cap agreed by the NHL and NHLPA was responsible for the fact that the DEL clubs signed unusually few new players from North America. Because it forced the NHL franchises to bet on cheaper players, so that players who were already on the watch list at DEL clubs stayed in North America to wait for a chance in the NHL. By August 1, 2005, the DEL clubs had only signed four players from North America ( Michel Périard , Lonny Bohonos , Mathieu Darche , Jason Holland ). At the beginning of the pre-season season, the Hamburg Freezers were still three places short of the first two storm formations, and the Eisbären didn't have a single new player under contract at this point. In the previous season, 22 NHL players had been active in Germany.

After the play-downs of the previous season, the Kassel Huskies were actually relegated. But they moved up for Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg , which the DEL shareholders' meeting had withdrawn from their license because the hall was too small and ailing. This uncertainty with regard to the question of the relegation and discrepancies in the management led to the fact that almost all top performers of the huskies of the last year had already signed with competitors before the license was granted (e.g. Daniel Corso and David Gosselin in Frankfurt, Brian Swanson and Christian Laflamme in Nuremberg, Kirk Furey in Iserlohn and Stephan Retzer in Mannheim) and there was little time to form a squad.

SAP Arena in Mannheim

After Hamburg, Cologne, Hanover, Krefeld, Nuremberg and Ingolstadt, Mannheim was the seventh DEL location to receive a multifunctional arena in recent years: The SAP arena can accommodate almost 14,000 spectators and was the venue for the 2010 Ice Hockey World Championship .

The relegation of the national team also had a negative effect on the DEL , because in contrast to the Frankfurt Lions a year ago, the Eisbären Berlin were no longer qualified for the IIHF European Champions Cup . On the other hand, they accepted HC Davos' invitation to the renowned Spengler Cup , which they finished in third place, two points behind the winner Team Canada .

economy

Compared to the previous year, the budget of the 14 teams increased by 5% to € 69.8 million. Compared to handball and basketball, the DEL had access to a large amount of TV money from the pay TV broadcaster Premiere (€ 195,000 / club). The elite leagues of the other two sports received only a fraction of it. As the main sponsor of the league, the Yellow Pages advertised the boards in every stadium and on the clubs' official websites with a DEL yellow pages double logo. In the last months of the season, the referees wore a Premiere logo on their backs.

The Adler Mannheim thus replaced the Hamburg Freezers again as budget croesus. The Iserlohn Roosters remained at the bottom of this ranking. The EV Duisburg's budget almost doubled in view of the rise, and the Adler planned with more money due to the additional income from the SAP Arena. The Krefeld Penguins had digested the financial crisis after the championship in 2003 and increased their budget by half a million euros. The strong season of Frankfurt, which was crowned by the renewed entry into the semi-finals, brought the 2004 champions a budget increase of 400,000 euros. Overall, the clubs raised a new record amount of almost 70 million euros for the 2005/06 season.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was played as a double round, so that everyone played four games against each other.

September 2005

The twelfth season of the DEL began on September 8, 2005 with the Adler Mannheim game against the DEG Metro Stars.

The team of the hour in the early stages of this DEL season were clearly the Hannover Scorpions, who all won the first six games of the season and laid an important foundation for reaching the play-offs later. The Frankfurt Lions also had a good start to the season, who scored 21 points in the first nine games, in contrast to the Hamburg Freezers, who even started the season after four of eight games (1st, 2nd, 6th and 8th matchday) Bottom of the table were. This was partly due to the unsatisfactory performance of the parade series with Benoît Gratton , François Fortier and Marc Beaucage . From September 30, things went better, which was reflected in eight home wins in a row.

On September 23rd, the goalkeeper of the Kölner Haie, Oliver Jonas , injured himself , so that the then 19-year-old Thomas Greiss got a chance in the Haie goal that he knew how to use. The youngster was not only a good representative while Jonas was unable to play, but also established himself as the number 1 goalie afterwards. Four of Duisburg's first five games were lost, the start was somewhat mixed, but was topped by two series of defeats in December and January. Only five wins from the first 20 games showed the Kassel Huskies the way to the table cellar right from the start. Many short-term players had to get used to the DEL level.

Michael Wolf (Iserlohn Roosters) , who was later voted “ Rookie of the Year” (best new player), had an excellent start in the DEL . In the home game against Eisbären Berlin alone, Wolf scored 3 goals (final score: 9: 6). Ernst Höfner , assistant coach of the German national team, praised him like this after the season: “He has always been dynamic, a fighter, gave 100%. Now he's still scoring his goals. ”In addition, as the only newcomer to the German league, he became a top performer straight away. Michael Waginger from Duisburg was chosen as the second best rookie . Like Wolf, he only moved from the 2nd Bundesliga to the top German division at a relatively late age (26, Wolf was 24), where he immediately received important tasks in his team. In view of such successes, the DEL set the age of the sponsorship license for the 2006/07 season from 23 to 25 years.

At the end of September, Mirko Lüdemann completed his 600th DEL game.

October 2005

At the beginning of October, the game between the Nürnberg Ice Tigers and Adler Mannheim had to be canceled because an ice champion in the Nürnberger Versicherung Arena had damaged a cooling pipe while drilling the holes for the goals, so that harmful ammonia escaped. The Ice Tigers paid for the € 5,000 travel expenses for the Mannheimers.

At the same time, EV Duisburg got a bad goalkeeper problem when the regular goalkeeper Patrick Koslow injured his eye at the cup game in Düsseldorf from a Bengali fire, whereupon the foxes borrowed Patrick Ehelechner from Mannheim. A 9: 6 victory by the Roosters initiated a series of four defeats in a row at the Eisbären Berlin, the low point of the season for the German champions, which increased enormously towards the end. Four defeats in a row were also recorded for DEG in October, which never again lost in direct succession this season. In Mannheim at this time the press conferences after the game were abolished and replaced by a so-called "open locker room". After the game, journalists were able to listen to comments from those involved in the team dressing rooms.

On the 12th matchday a 13-game series of defeats began for the Augsburg Panthers. One game day later there was a change at the top of the table of the DEL - ERC Ingolstadt rose to first place and only left it on the 50th game day. October was probably the most successful month in the club's history for the Ingolstadt team, as there was only one defeat for every seven wins. Successful weeks began for the Nürnberg Ice Tigers at the end of the month with 20 out of 24 possible points.

Their 600th DEL game played in October by Martin Reichel from Frankfurt and Tino Boos from Cologne .

November 2005

In November, the American professional referee Rick Looker began his service in the DEL.

On November 2, the first coach discharge of the season took place: The Augsburg Panthers separated from coach Randy Edmonds and on November 14 hired Paulin Bordeleau as his successor. The Hamburg Freezers suffered from bad luck with injuries: After goalkeeper Boris Rousson and back-up Steffen Karg , Tobias Güttner was injured, which is why they got help from Eisbären Berlin. Youri Ziffzer was loaned out for a few weeks, Roland Schröder came from Braunlage . Ziffzer quickly returned to Berlin, Güttner was ready for action again. But towards the end of the month Güttner injured himself again. Help came promptly again from Berlin, the polar bears loaned Sebastian Stefaniszin to the Freezers .

In Kassel, Martin Sychra ended his career prematurely after suffering the fourth herniated disc in the last three years in November. On the other hand, the Adler Mannheim voluntarily renounced a player: Steve Kelly , who until then headed the internal scorer rating, was given leave of absence after disputes with assistant coach Jackson Penney . On November 29th, he was introduced as a new addition to the Adler's arch-rivals, the Frankfurt Lions. The Kölner Haie had not needed any reinforcements so far, every game this month was won.

The effects of the change of coach in Augsburg were not immediately felt. The Panthers' record in November: 13 defeats in a row. One of them ended an eight-game lean period for the Iserlohn Roosters. Mannheim meanwhile signed Daniel Del Monte from the second division. Due to the empty player market, it should not be the last player to rise from the second division during the season. The Eisbären Berlin realized that the championship title could not be defended with the three 19-year-old young talents Daniar Dshunussow , Youri Ziffzer and Sebastian Stefaniszin . That is why manager Peter-John Lee signed the young Czech Tomáš Pöpperle in November .

December 2005

At the beginning of December, the Kölner Haie team of the hour, because after 13 victories in a row they consolidated the second place behind the ERC Ingolstadt. Meanwhile, the Hannover Scorpions and the Kassel Huskies exchanged two players among themselves. Defender Brad Burym went to Northern Hesse, in return Dominik Hammer became a Scorpion. However, the latter were just going through their season low, also due to the bad luck with injuries that led to the reactivation of 43-year-old Wallace Schreiber .

The second change of coach of the season followed in December. The Adler Mannheim feared they would miss the play-offs, which is why they took Stéphane Richer on leave and hired Greg Poss shortly afterwards . Poss, who was given a two-year contract, had terminated his contract as national coach on the day of his appointment in agreement with the DEB .

As the first of three clubs, the Kölner Haie had to pay a fine of € 5,000 to the DEL in December due to an inadequate security service. Objects had been thrown on the ice during a home game in the KölnArena.

On December 23rd, the DEL and DEB signed a new cooperation agreement, which provided for an extended promotion of young talent, a strengthening of the national teams, but no athletic promotion and relegation between the first and second division.

Michael Bresagk of the Frankfurt Lions was happy about his 600th DEL game this month.

January 2006

Since January 1st, referees should pay more attention to fouls like hooks, stops or hindrances, which should especially benefit fast and tech-savvy players. This guideline was initially handled very strictly. On the first day of the new year, the referees distributed an average of 62 penalty minutes per game.

On January 3, the Iserlohn Roosters signed the goalkeeper Rich Parent , who had already stopped for the IEC two years earlier, in order to gain stability in the relegation battle. The old number one, Dimitrij Kochnev , made too many mistakes in the last few games and therefore reacted not very happily to the parent purchase. No change in goal, but on the gang was carried out on January 10th in Kassel. The hapless Bernie Englbrecht was given leave of absence, about whose release there had been initial public discussions in November. At that time, however, the players' council around captain Tobias Abstreiter spoke out against it. Now partner Rainer Lippe dismissed Englbrecht, which resulted in the resignation of Abstreiters. A little later, however, the captain was persuaded to withdraw. The new coach was Stéphane Richer, who was released in Mannheim.

In January, the DEL first sentenced EV Duisburg, and later also the Kassel Huskies, to a fine of € 2,500 for inadequate security staff because objects had been thrown onto the ice surface during a game in their stadiums.

Meanwhile, the DEG Metro Stars were able to report positive news. Top scorer Tore Vikingstad , who was said to be returning to his homeland in Norway, extended his contract in Düsseldorf until 2008. For the first time since November 6, the Eisbären Berlin lost an away game on January 22, for their opponent, the Füchse Duisburg , it was the penultimate victory of the preliminary round.

February 2006

Trainers were fired elsewhere, and contracts with trainers were extended in Hamburg and Düsseldorf in February. Both Mike Schmidt and Don Jackson will be in charge of their teams in the coming season.

As in November for the TUI Nations Cup , the DEL interrupted its gaming operations at the Olympic Games in Turin . Many teams used this break for test matches or tournaments abroad. The Frankfurt Lions played a tournament in Nagano , the Iserlohn Roosters and the Kölner Haie won the Ahearne Cup in England for Germany, the EV Duisburg played a tournament in Holland and Augsburg, Ingolstadt, Nuremberg, Kassel and Hamburg were in Switzerland during this time traveled.

In addition to games, there were also some changes during this break. For example, the penguins from Krefeld brought Dave Tomlinson , Hamburg reinforced themselves with Andrej Nedorost , Ingolstadt signed Jeff Maund and in Frankfurt Petr Macholda and Christian Kohmann , who came from Kassel, signed. Furthermore, Jan Alinč and Mike Souza moved to Cologne, Tero Lehterä to Duisburg and Jonathan Lehun to the master from Berlin.

Lehun made his debut in the polar bear dress on the first day after the Olympic Games, but the four Olympians were spared. This led to allegations that they were distorting competition because the opponents were the Krefeld penguins who were still fighting for a place in the play-offs. But the capital city won the game 5: 3, which made these assumptions out of the world.

The Frankfurt Lions did not come out of the Olympic break so well, they could only collect one point by the end of the preliminary round (against arch rivals Mannheim of all places).

In February, Kassel's captain Tobias Abstreiter played for the 600th time in the DEL.

March 2006

March began with the Hamburg Freezers, the sixth team securing the play-off participation. From then on, four teams fought for the last two places. On the 49th day of the match, Krefeld defeated their rivals from Mannheim, with the Penguins replacing Frankfurt in eighth place. This order remained until the end, Hanover and Krefeld were the last two play-off participants. In Frankfurt, the players then had to report individually, with the Adler, the planning for the coming season was as good as completed. Manager Marcus Kuhl took sole responsibility for the poor performance in the first year of the SAP Arena .

The league leaders changed on the penultimate matchday. The ERC Ingolstadt, which was now leader of the DEL table for 134 days, was replaced by the Eisbären Berlin shortly before the end. The final sprint of the Augsburg Panthers was also extremely positive. They pushed the Kassel Huskies out of 12th place and thus secured themselves early relegation.

The first eight clubs in the table above played for the championship, the last two against relegation. This is the first time since the introduction of the play-offs in German ice hockey that the Adler Mannheim, runners-up last season, did not qualify for the finals. Even for the Frankfurt Lions, the season ended early despite higher expectations. For them, the Hannover Scorpions and the Krefeld Penguins played again in the top eight after several years of abstinence.

Quarter finals

The quarter-finals were played from March 15, 2006 in the " Best-of-Seven " mode. The best-placed team in the main round, the Eisbären Berlin, met the eighth-placed Krefeld Pinguine, the second-placed ERC Ingolstadt the seventh Hannover Scorpions, the third, the DEG Metro Stars, the sixth-placed Hamburg Freezers and the fourth-placed Nürnberg Ice Tigers the Kölner Haie who finished the main round in fifth.

It was a classic false start for the Eisbären Berlin in the play-off quarter-finals when the Penguins won the first game 4-2. Match winner was Robert Guillet , who scored two goals. It would be the only defeat of the eventual champions in these play-offs. The victory in the second game was all the more safe. Steve Walker scored two goals for the champions. The third game was one of the most exciting of the season: the Pinguine went into the final section with a 4-2 lead, but the Berliners were able to turn the game around in front of their own audience within eight minutes and deprive Krefeld of a certain victory. In the fourth game, Krefeld was able to equalize a 2-0 from Berlin, but then the capitals turned up and won 5-2. The polar bears were then able to secure the semi-finals in the fifth game of the series with an undisputed 4-1 home win against the penguins, who only had three rows.

ERC Ingolstadt was already leading 3-0 in the first quarter-final game when they let the Scorpions get close to 3-2. Ultimately, however, the victory was saved over time. In the second game, the Hanoverians led 2-0 after just 13 minutes. The lead, which was shortened to 2: 1 in the 52nd minute, should be enough to equalize the series. In Game 3, the Panthers, who were already very strong at home in the preliminary round, struck back and turned a 2-0 deficit into a clear 6-2 victory. Away, on the other hand, did not go so much, the fourth game in the series led to an equalization: 2: 2. Too many penalties against Hanover in game five led to a 5-0 victory for the Panthers, which was only missing one victory for the semi-finals. But just as clearly as in game five, the sixth game ended in favor of the home team, this time the Hannover Scorpions. It came to the showdown in Ingolstadt, which was only decided by an empty net goal in the last minute. After the Scorpions had only watched the play-offs last year as a spectator, they were in the semi-finals this season.

The very first game of this quarter-final series went into extra time, in which the former Hamburger Craig Johnson made the decision in favor of DEG. The result from game two was clearer: it was 3-0 after the first third, 4-1 after the second. In the end, Hamburg won 4-2. The Metro Stars quickly led 1-0 in the next game, and the equalizer quickly followed. The decision to make a clear 4: 1 was only made in the final phase with goals in the 57th and 60th minutes. But the Freezers were able to level the series again in the fourth game. The match winner in this 3-2 victory was Jeff Ulmer , who scored twice. In the next meeting, the teams had to go into extra time for the second time and again the winner was DEG Metro Stars. Daniel Kreutzer scored the winning goal in the 66th minute. The Düsseldorfers were able to celebrate the semi-finals in Hamburg when they won 4-2. The 2-0 lead from the 6th minute was evened out by the Hanseatic League, but in the final section Kreutzer and Alexander Sulzer ensured DEG's victory.

The Kölner Haie had hardly any problems in the quarter-finals against the Nürnberg Ice Tigers, who were eliminated for the sixth time in a row despite a promising position in the table in the play-off quarter-finals. In the first game, the Haie took a 3-0 lead within three minutes, which was equalized by the Ice Tigers. Lasse Kopitz scored the winning goal in the final section. The second game was clearer: Brad Schlegel scored both goals for a 2-0 lead, Stéphane Julien and Mike Souza increased it. In the third game, the Ice Tigers were able to equalize a Cologne lead twice before they took the lead themselves. Mirko Lüdemann saved the Haie shortly before the end of the game in extra time, in which Bill Lindsay made the decision. A 6-2 win then secured the semi-finals.

The Eisbären Berlin , the DEG Metro Stars , the Kölner Haie and the Hannover Scorpions qualified for the semi-finals.

Semifinals

The semi-finals were held from March 30th and, like the finals, in the " Best-of-Five " mode. The best-placed team in the preliminary round met the worst-placed team, while the second-best team in the preliminary round played against the third-best placed.

The polar bears had the longer recovery phase after the quarter-finals, but the Scorpions started the semi-final series committed. Only in the extension did the Hohenschönhausen team prevail against Hanover, which in the meantime even led 3-1. In the second game in the TUI Arena , the Scorpions equalized a Berlin lead twice, but the polar bears scored the winning goal in the second section. Game three of the series then took place again in the Corrugated Iron Palace. Two goals each from Denis Pederson and Stefan Ustorf helped the capital city to win 5: 3, which meant that the Berlin team qualified again for the DEL final series.

The most heated duel of the 2006 play-offs was probably the Rhenish derby between Düsseldorf and Cologne, which was mainly characterized by controversial referee decisions. Referee Rick Looker gave the Haie twice as many penalties as DEG in the first game. They took the lead 3-0 in the first half hour, but the goals by Alex Hicks and Jan Alinč made the game exciting again. However, the cathedral townspeople no longer managed to compensate. In front of a home audience, the Cologne-based company was able to equalize the series. Hicks and Eduard Lewandowski scored the decisive goals in the final section. DEG clearly won the third game 6: 1 after the Haie took a 1-0 lead; Goals alone Vikingstad scored three times in the opposing goal.

In Cologne, the teams ran in front of a record crowd of 18,700 spectators. With 4: 4 it went into extra time, in which the Metro Stars hardly had any chances. Bill Lindsay equalized the series. The decision was made on Brehmstrasse , which was replaced after the season by the newly built ISS Dome . The Metro Stars turned a 2: 3 deficit into a 5: 3 lead in the last five minutes. The Cologne fans and those in charge blamed referee Looker, who punished Cologne’s heated approach with 87 penalty minutes in the last five minutes of the game. For the Düsseldorf team, the joy was all the greater because for the first time in ten years they made it into the DEL final by beating arch rivals Cologne.

The Eisbären Berlin and the DEG Metro Stars had thus qualified for the final.

final

The final series was played from April 13th. The Eisbären Berlin had the first home right due to their better placement in the main round.

Polar bears Berlin - DEG Metro Stars 3-0 6: 1 2-0 6: 2 - - [2: 2]

Like last year, the polar bears won the final series with a sweep . The first game was won 6: 1 without much effort. After 35 minutes they were already 3-0 up, and after conceding a goal in the last third, last doubts were removed. The second game was also the last DEL game on Brehmstrasse, which is why the atmosphere among the 10,217 spectators was brilliant. Walser and Quint gave the polar bears a 2-0 lead in the first two thirds, which was ultimately the end result. In the third game, after the first third, it looked like Düsseldorf had a chance. The first break was 2: 1, but then only the German champions came into play and increased the result to 6: 2.

The Eisbären Berlin won the play-offs . They became German champions in 2006 and celebrated their second title win in a row after 2005.

referee

The referees started the season with a team of 16 referees:

  • Roland Aumüller
  • Frank Awizus
  • Stefan Breiter
  • Heiko Dahle
  • Harald Deubert
  • Ralph Dimmers
  • Alfred Hascher
  • Michael Langer
  • Christian Oswald
  • Axel Rademaker
  • Martin Reichert
  • Willi Schimm
  • Thomas Schurr
  • Richard Schütz
  • Roland Seckler
  • Stefan Vogl

For reasons of age, Wolfgang Hellwig and professional referee Petr Chvatal left this team before the season. Gerhard Lichtnecker had the prospect of a job as a supervisor at the IIHF , which is why he also stopped as a DEL referee. During the season, Dimmers, Langer and Vogl were downgraded to second division referees. They were replaced by ex-ice hockey player Steffen Klau and newcomer Daniel Piechaczek and Rick Looker, who came from the USA as a professional. He performed well at the beginning, but later his form decreased. Looker alone distributed eleven of a total of 77 game misconduct penalties.

As in previous years, the DEL took part in the IIHF Referee Exchange Program , although Thomas Schurr no longer took part for family reasons and was replaced by Martin Reichert. The second participant in this program was Richard Schütz. In return, 13 DEL games were led by foreign referees.

Since January 1, 2006, the referees were required to follow the “zero tolerance policy”. As a result, more sentences were handed out for a short period of time. After that, the quota leveled off again at the previous level, which was partly due to the fact that the referees were less consistent again after a few games, but also to the fact that the players adjusted to the new interpretation of the rules.

In order to lead new referees (e.g. also former players) to the DEL, the league founded a trainee program, which is headed by ex-DEL referee Gerhard Müller. Five referees took part: Georgij Jablukow, Raik van Gameren, Daniel Piechaczek , Ulpi Sicorschi and Markus Brill.

All-Star Game

The DEL All-Star Game 2006 took place on February 5, 2006 in the Krefeld Königpalast . For the last time, an all-star team of the best foreign DEL players and the German national team faced each other. From the 2006/07 season, a team from Europe competed against a selection of the best North American players in the league. After 60 minutes, the German national team finally won 5: 3 goals. In the Skills Competition, Eduard Lewandowski was the fastest skater with 12.95 seconds, Thomas Greiss was the best goalkeeper and Jakub Ficenec had the hardest slap shot with 142 km / h.
