Mode and rules

At its 69th shareholders' meeting in November 2007, the league decided to reduce the number of preliminary round matches from the current 56 to 52 after increasing the league from 15 to 16 teams. For this purpose, the teams are divided into four groups based on the main round final table 2006/07. The teams continue to compete against each other four times, with the exception of the teams from group A (places 1, 8, 9 and 16) against each of group D (4, 5, 12, 13) and the teams from group B (2, 7th place) , 10, 15) against each of the group C (3, 6, 11, 14), which only meet twice. The division of the league into groups will not be reflected in the table. The proposal to divide the DEL into regional groups modeled on the NHL was rejected.

The six best-placed teams will continue to move into the play-offs automatically , the four teams in positions seven to ten will fight for the play-offs in a qualification after the main round. The decision to introduce play-downs and a relegation with the champions of the 2nd Bundesliga for the 2008/09 season , however, will not be implemented because the ice hockey game operating company of the 2nd Bundesliga made the necessary reforms due to "given structures and requirements for the game operations of the 2. League and Oberliga "could not allow in the short time.

For the 2008/09 season, the group division and the number of games are as follows:

The new O₂ World during its construction

Shortly after the start of the 2008/09 season, the Eisbären Berlin moved to the O 2  World, which was recently completed and has a capacity of 17,000 . For the 2008/09 season, the IIHF hosted the Champions Hockey League for the first time - a national championship competition modeled on the UEFA Champions League . The DEL was ranked 7th in the European league ranking by the IIHF, so two teams were able to take part in the CHL: The main round winner Nürnberg Ice Tigers failed in a qualification tournament against SC Bern (Switzerland). As champions, Eisbären Berlin qualified directly for the group stage and, with three wins from four games, finished second in the group stage behind the eventual finalist HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk from Russia.

The German Ice Hockey Cup , which has been held since 2002, was played in a slightly different form this season. The preliminary round was held in eight tournaments at ESBG locations with two DEL and two ESBG teams each. The ESBG and DEL representatives met each other, DEL clubs and ESBG clubs did not play among themselves. The winner of the tournament moved into the quarterfinals, which was played in knockout mode as before. The Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg won the title .

Transfers

At the beginning of the season, master Eisbären Berlin relied on his well-rehearsed behavior from the previous season and only strengthened himself occasionally. In addition to young player André Mangold , the team only strengthened itself with DEL top defender Richie Regehr , who moved from the Frankfurt Lions to the Spree, and striker Matt McIlvane . Last year's finalist Kölner Haie was able to sign an even more prominent player in Mike Johnson . The Canadian completed 661 NHL games for the St. Louis Blues , the Montreal Canadiens , the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Toronto Maple Leafs and replaced Ivan Ciernik , who despite an ongoing contract in Cologne in the new Russian KHL for HK Sibir Novosibirsk changed. With Harlan Pratt from the Augsburger Panthern , Christoph Melischko from the ERC Ingolstadt and Christoph Ullmann from the Adler Mannheim , the Haie also secured the services of three other DEL experienced regular employees. Kai Hospelt and Sebastian Furchner , however, switched to league rivals Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg . Record champions Mannheim only added to their squad in a few places. With goalkeeper Fred Brathwaite and striker Jason King , two NHL experienced players switched to the Eagles. The regulars Martin Ančička (to the Sinupret Ice Tigers ), Jeff Shantz ( EC KAC ) and Eduard Lewandowski ( HK Spartak Moscow ) left the club.

Frederic Cassivi moved from the Washington Capitals to the goal of the Sinupret Ice Tigers

Meanwhile, surprise play-off participant Iserlohn Roosters signed NHL-experienced Ben Simon to replace Pat Kavanagh, who moved to Frankfurt early on . The Frankfurt Lions compensated for the departures of the two regulars Richie Regehr and Jason Marshall by signing Mathieu Biron , younger brother of NHL goalkeeper Martin Biron , as well as John Slaney and Lance Ward . In the storm, two more well-known players were signed by the DEG Metro Stars: Josh Langfeld and Jamie Wright, who are experienced in the NHL . Local rivals Kassel Huskies were able to sign three established players for the first season after a two-year league abstinence: national player Manuel Klinge , Colin Beardsmore from Nuremberg and Sean Tallaire from Cologne. The DEG Metro Stars , economically stricken by the bad pre-season , left crowd favorite Tore Vikingstad and goal scorer Klaus Kathan, two long-time regular players, with Adam Courchaine (Duisburg), Shane Joseph (Augsburg), Ryan Ramsay (Krefeld) and Bradley Tutschek (Ingolstadt), at least some DEL -experienced replacement workers are purchased.

In addition, Jere Karalahti , who previously worked for the Los Angeles Kings and the Nashville Predators and is now hired by the Hamburg Freezers, changed Frédéric Cassivi , who replaced the national goalkeeper Dimitrij Kotschnew in Nuremberg, who had emigrated to Russia , Jon Klemm , two-time Stanley Cup Winner and new Straubinger, other players who had already gained experience in the National Hockey League, in the DEL.

economy

Compared to the previous year, the clubs' budgets remained almost stable, the average budget was € 5.24 million, which was a slight increase compared to the previous year. The total budget of the clubs was increased due to the addition of a further team from 78.7 to 84.3 million euros. Once again, the DEL had a comparatively high amount of TV money from the pay TV broadcaster Premiere. As the main sponsor of the league, the Yellow Pages continued to advertise the boards in every stadium as well as on the official websites of the clubs, the referees appear with a lettering from the pharmaceutical company taxofit . In August 2008, the Hamburg publishing house Milchstraße, which also owns the TV Spielfilm and TV Today program magazines, announced a close collaboration with the German Ice Hockey League.

The Adler Mannheim remained budget croesus of the league, the largest budget increase was achieved by Meister Eisbären Berlin with an additional 1.7 million euros. The new bottom of the ranking are the Augsburg panthers and the newcomers Kassel Huskies , after the team with the smallest budget to date, EV Duisburg, increased its budget by one million euros. The strong season of the Iserlohn Roosters , which surprisingly took fifth place in the preliminary round, brought the team a budget increase of 700,000 euros. As the first DEL team, the DEG Metro Stars announced in February 2008 that they would significantly reduce the budget for the next season. The club justified this mainly with the poor performance of the club in the preliminary round 2007/08 and the drop in the number of spectators to only 6,124 spectators per home game.

On August 28, Gerd Schröder , the owner of the Frankfurt Lions and chairman of the supervisory board of the DEL, died at the age of 49 after suffering a stroke a few days earlier. However, after initial concerns, the future of the Lions was declared secure. Jürgen Arnold , partner of ERC Ingolstadt , took over Schröder's position as chairman of the supervisory board of the German ice hockey league.

During the season, both the Kölner Haie and the Sinupret Ice Tigers reported significant financial problems that threatened the continued existence of the DEL. The people of Domstadt, who did not take part in the playoffs for the first time in 28 years, had suffered considerable financial losses due to falling audience numbers as a result of the sporting crisis. In February 2009, the club announced that a group of around ten investors had agreed to repay the club's liabilities and secure the sporting future in the future. In February, a group of medium-sized entrepreneurs in Nuremberg also agreed to take over the debts of the 2007 runner-up, but then backed down. It was only in April that entrepreneur Thomas Sabo agreed to take over the club after the pharmaceutical company Bionorica had left , whereupon the team will again appear under the name Nürnberg Ice Tigers in the coming season .

After the end of the regular season, the Füchse Duisburg and their sole shareholder Ralf Pape declared that they wanted to withdraw from the DEL after four years due to a lack of sporting prospects and the resulting loss of millions. The GmbH responsible for the game operations of the professional team filed for bankruptcy. After the license for the 2nd Bundesliga was refused by the ice hockey game operating company, the club then has to start in the state association of North Rhine-Westphalia. For the free place, the champions of the 2nd Bundesliga , the Bietigheim Steelers , had athletically qualified, but refrained from participating in the licensing procedure for the DEL.

WestLB Fair Play Trophy

The WestLB Fair Play Trophy is the fairest team in a DEL season every year. For this purpose, the average penalty minutes of the clubs are converted to points, each game ban that is issued by the league company against a player is assessed with an additional point and added to the average penalty minutes. The fewest points, with an average of 15.42 penalty minutes per game and two game suspensions, went to Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg , who won the WestLB Fair Play Trophy for the second time in a row. The Adler Mannheim came off worst with a total of 23.57 points.
