The railway through the prairie (OT: Des rails sur la prairie ) is a comic book from the Lucky Luke series. It was drawn by Morris and is the first volume in the series to be written by René Goscinny . The comic first appeared from August 1955 in sequels in the Belgian magazine Spirou and in 1957 as an album by Dupuis . It was printed in German in 1958 and 1959 in seven parts in Der hehre Fridolin , then in 1995 as volume 9 in the Lucky Luke Classics series of the Ehapa publishing house and in the third volume as part of the 2003 complete edition. In 2006 it appeared as volume 79 of the album edition of the Ehapa publishing house.

With The Railway Through the Prairie , the Lucky Luke series changed from a more realistic western to a pure western parody.

action

The President of the Transcontinental Railway wants to connect the east coast of the United States with the west coast by a railway line. All that remains to be done is to lay rails between Chicago and San Francisco . Black Wilson, the owner of a stagecoach line, sees his skins swim away and orders his henchmen to stop the construction work on the railway line by all means. Lucky Luke, who intervened on behalf of the railway workers in the tranquil nest Dead Ox Gulch, the previous terminus of the railway in the east, is appointed supervisor. Under his direction, the railroad made its way westward, despite attempts at sabotage by Black Wilson's men, Indian attacks and difficult terrain. Black Wilson, angry at the failure of his people, takes matters into his own hands, but is no more successful. In Desert City, on the edge of the desert, there is a showdown . Lucky Luke can overwhelm Black Wilson and the construction work then progresses quickly. To complete the route, the President of the Transcontinental arrives and hangs the last nail, a golden one, in the threshold.

Historical background

Celebration for the completion of the route on May 10, 1869

From 1863 to 1869, the first transcontinental railroad connection was built in the USA. The railroad company Union Pacific Railroad laid its tracks from Omaha , Nebraska to the west, the Central Pacific Railroad from Sacramento , California to the east. On May 9, 1869, the line was closed at Promontory Summit in Utah , now a national memorial site as the Golden Spike National Historic Site . One day later, the route was opened to traffic as part of a celebration.

Remarks

The individual pages are signed with Morris & RG. Since Goscinny's initials are pronounced in French , like the name Hergé , they were later omitted.

filming

The railroad through the prairie was filmed in 1984 as the seventh episode of the cartoon series Lucky Luke .
