In this story, Lucky Luke prevents the demise of Erasmus Mulligan's circus while touring the American West.

action

Lucky Luke is pursued by Indians, who suddenly run away when an elephant appears in the middle of the prairie . While Luke is still wondering about this, Erasmus Mulligan shows up and introduces himself as the owner of a circus to which the elephant belongs. His wife, daughter and their husband also belong to the circus. Plus a tent, a couple of horses, Andy the elephant and Nelson , a decrepit lion. Everything else had been taken from Mulligan while playing poker . As a thank you for helping repair a car, the circus gives Luke a performance. But this is interrupted by an Indian attack. Luke can defuse the situation at first, but it escalates again when the Indians mistake the paint on the clown for war paint. This time the cavalry intervenes and accompanies the circus to Fort Coyote.

Fort Coyote will soon be hosting the annual rodeo . The organizer Curduroy "Diamantenzahn" Zilch owns the whole city and is therefore afraid of competition from the circus. In order to get rid of them quickly, he instructs the killer Rattlesnake Joe to kill the elephant. The unusual assignment - and Luke's skill in making him assistant to the knife thrower - makes him so nervous that he misses from very close range. Now Zilch is trying to turn the residents against the circus because the "bloodthirsty lion" threatens the people. Of course, he doesn't mention that he himself had its outbreak staged. The lion can easily be tamed by Mulligan again.

Lucky Luke can finally convince the citizens to give the circus a chance so that a gala performance is given that evening. Luke, who was thinking about which number to perform, dares to go on the tightrope . He rides the rope with Jolly Jumper , balancing on a ball and jumping rope. But because Zilch incited the Indians, they suddenly interrupt the event and burn the tent and with it the economic existence of the circus.

As the big rodeo starts, something unexpected happens: circus horses appear between the wild horses and instead of a cattle, the elephant is driven through the arena. Even an (actually, real) Indian attack in the arena becomes a spectacle for the public. Zilch is then convinced of the circus, so that the Western Circus "Zilch and Mulligan" will soon go on a European tour.
