action

Wyatt Earp, ca.1891

Old Clanton has always been the mayor of Tombstone. In every election he was the only candidate because something had "happened" to his opponents shortly before. Wyatt Earp wants to run with the help of his brothers Morgan Earp and Virgil Earp , this time to win the election for mayor. Ike , Frank and Billy, Clanton's three sons, use all kinds of tricks to try to prevent a fair election and to get rid of the Earps. Lucky Luke must use all his gunsmithing skills to keep the Clantons at bay.

When Luke offers to help the Earps, they draw his attention to the fact that they abhor violence, because their father had already tried to initiate a peaceful political debate. Luke takes off his hat and dryly explains that this wise principle ensured that Jeremiah Earp was allowed to inaugurate the Tombstone cemetery. Jeremiah Earp and Old Clanton had once found gold together, after which Clanton chased Jeremiah away and eventually disposed of.

The tombstone epitaph still exists today. It is the oldest newspaper in Arizona.

When Lucky Luke tries to advertise the upcoming debate between Wyatt Earp and Old Clanton at the Tombstone Epitaph , he only succeeds when he explains to the editor - who is also the city's gravedigger - that there could well be a shooting. The population does not give Wyatt a chance in the debate - all except for the dentist Doc Holliday , who is the only one who supports the Earps. Just before the debate, the Clanton brothers appear and claim that their father was murdered by Wyatt. They want to use the resulting confusion immediately to let all three Earps hang on the spot.

Luke cuts all three ropes with one shot and explains that the murder was staged. The population doesn't really care, because Ike Clanton's election manifesto, who is now running to replace his father, promises executions and a local round .

During the election meeting, which is also supposed to be the memorial service for Clanton, Luke suddenly bursts in with the lively Old Clanton, whereupon the election is postponed. The young Clantons are running away and threatening to blow up the church if their father is not handed over to them. The following shootout between the three Clantons on the one hand, Lucky Luke, Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday on the other hand, is decided by Luke with a crazy feat: He shoots a thrown revolver, the bullets of which render the three Clantons' weapons behind cover harmless.

The Tombstone Epitaph has already printed the appropriate extra sheet from the comeback of the Old Clantons - unfortunately too early, because the Clantons are all tied up after all. Wyatt Earp recently renounced the office of mayor in favor of Doc Holiday. He becomes a sheriff himself.
