content

Lucky Luke is contacted by attorney JS Chester. The reason: Rantanplan inherited a silver mine, a saloon, a hotel and most of the buildings in the Chinatown in Virginia City from Oggie Svenson . Lucky Luke is asked to accompany Rantanplan to Virginia City and to take over the role of his bodyguard. Rantanplan is greeted euphorically in Virginia City and at the Hotel International and is popular with everyone as the new boss. The will also says that Joe Dalton may take over the inheritance in the event of Rantanplan's death. When Joe and the rest of the Daltons find out about it, they tumble out of prison and also set out to kill Rantanplan. The situation comes to a head when Rantanplan runs away. In his stupidity, however, he just runs around in circles and when he gets hungry, he eats toadstools, the poison of which puts him out of action. He is found by a trapper who brings him back. Lucky Luke can just stop Joe from attacking Rantanplan, but then the situation gets worse because the Chinese want to kill Rantanplan too, but the many workers in the hotel want to protect him. But before there can be a mass brawl, the American cavalry comes by. Then it turns out that Svenson did not die after all and accordingly his will is no longer valid. Quiet returns in Virginia City and Lucky Luke brings Rantanplan back to prison.

Remarks

The album is based on historical events. In the second half of the 19th century, there really was a gold rush in Virginia City. On page 13, Mark Twain appears as a reporter for the local newspaper Territorial Enterprise . He actually worked there from 1862 to 1863 and also used his pseudonym for the first time . The Hotel International also existed until 1914, as can be read on the last page of the volume.
