Gustavus Miller Bower

Gustavus Miller Bower (born December 12, 1790 near Culpeper , Virginia , †  November 17, 1864 near Paris , Missouri ) was an American politician . Between 1843 and 1845 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Gustavus Bower attended the public schools in his homeland. After a subsequent medical degree in Philadelphia and his license as a doctor, he began to work in this profession. Before 1812 he moved to Nicholasville , Kentucky. He was a military doctor during the British-American War . He was one of the few survivors of the Battle of Frenchtown on January 23, 1813.

In 1833, Bower moved to Paris, Missouri, where he worked as a doctor and in agriculture. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1842 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the then newly created fourth constituency of Missouri , where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1843. Until March 3, 1845 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . This was determined by the discussions about a possible annexation of the Republic of Texas , which had been independent of Mexico since 1836 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Gustavus Bower practiced as a doctor again. He died on November 17, 1864 near Paris, where he was buried in the family cemetery.
