Nicholas Ford (born June 21, 1833 in Wicklow , Ireland , † June 18, 1897 in Miltonvale , Kansas ) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1883 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Nicholas Ford attended public schools in his Irish homeland. In 1848 he came with his parents to the United States, where the family first in Chicago ( Illinois settled). In 1859 Ford moved to Saint Joseph , Missouri. In the following years he worked in the mining industry in Colorado and Montana . On his return to Missouri, he settled in the local city of Rochester , where he worked in commerce. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the short-lived Greenback Party . In 1875 he was a member of the Missouri House of Representatives .

In the congressional election of 1878 Ford was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Missouri , where he succeeded David Rea on March 4, 1879 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1883 . In the years 1882 and 1890 he applied unsuccessfully for his stay in or his return to Congress. In the meantime he had become a member of the Republican Party . As their candidate, he ran for the office of governor of Missouri in 1884 just as unsuccessfully . He later moved to Virginia City , Nevada , where he became a member of the ward council. Nicholas Ford spent his old age in Miltonvale, where he died on June 18, 1897.
