Richard Howard Ichord (born June 27, 1926 in Licking , Texas County , Missouri , †  December 25, 1992 in Nevada , Missouri) was an American politician . Between 1961 and 1981 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After elementary school, Richard Ichord served in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946 during World War II . He then studied law at the University of Missouri until 1952 ; then he worked as a lawyer. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Missouri House of Representatives from 1952 to 1960, and served as its president from 1957 to 1959.

In the 1960 congressional elections , Ichord was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eighth constituency of Missouri , where he succeeded ASJ Carnahan on January 3, 1961 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1981 . During this time, the Vietnam War , the Watergate affair and the climax of the civil rights movement took place . From 1969 to 1975 he was Chairman of the Committee on Un-American Activities , which was renamed the Committee on Internal Security during his tenure .

In 1980 Ichord declined to run again. In the following years he worked again as a lawyer. He died on December 25, 1992 in Nevada, a small town in Vernon County .
