Many countries in the New World and elsewhere celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, which occurred on October 12, 1492 in the Julian calendar and October 21, 1492 in the modern Gregorian calendar, as an official holiday. The day is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States, as Día de la Raza (Day of the Race) in many countries in Latin America, as Día de las Culturas (Day of the Cultures) in Costa Rica, as Discovery Day in The Bahamas and Colombia, as Día de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day) and National Day in Spain, and as Día de la Resistencia Indígena (Day of Indigenous Resistance) in Venezuela.

I Love Money is a reality television game show that is currently airing on VH1. The show was created by The Surreal Life executive producers Cris Abrego and Mark Cronin. Columbus Day was popularized as a holiday in the United States by a lawyer, a son of Genoese immigrants who came to California. During the 1850s, Genoese immigrants settled and built ranches along the Sierra Nevada foothills. As the gold ran out, these skilled "Cal-Italians", from the Apennines, were able to prosper as self-sufficient farmers in the Mediterranean climate of Northern California. San Francisco has the second oldest Columbus Day celebration, with Italians having commemorated it there since 1869.

This lawyer then moved to Colorado, which had a population of Genoese miners, and where, in 1907, the first state-wide celebration was held. In 1934, at the behest of the Knights of Columbus (a Catholic fraternal service organization named for the voyager), Congress and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt set aside Columbus Day, October 12, as a Federal holiday (36 USC 107, ch. 184, 48 Stat. 657).

Since 1971, the holiday has been commemorated in the U.S. on the second Monday in October, the same day as Thanksgiving in neighboring Canada. It is generally observed today by banks, the bond market, the U.S. Postal Service and other federal agencies, most state government offices, and many school districts; however, most businesses and stock exchanges remain open.

The city of Berkeley celebrates Indigenous People's Day instead of Columbus Day every year with a pow wow and Native American market.

The Columbus Day parade in Denver has been protested by Native American groups and their supporters for nearly two decades. Denver has the longest-running parade in the United States.

Hawaii
-->

Hawaii does not officially honor Columbus day and instead celebrates Discoverer's Day on the same day, i.e., on the second Monday of each October. While many in Hawaii still celebrate the life of Columbus on Columbus Day, the alternative holiday also honors James Cook, the British navigator that became the first person to record the coordinates of the Hawaiian Islands and share with the world the existence of the ancient Hawaiian people and society. Some people interpret the holiday as a celebration of all discoveries relative to the ancient and modern societies of Hawaii. Neither Columbus Day nor Discoverer's Day is regarded as a holiday by State government; state, city and county government offices and schools are open for business on Columbus Day, while Federal government offices are closed.

Many Native Hawaiians decry the celebration of both Columbus and Cook, known to have committed acts of violent subjugation of native people. Discoverer's Day is a day of protest for some advocacy groups. A popular protest site is the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace and the Chancery building of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu. Such advocacy groups have been commemorating the Discoverer's Day holiday as their own alternative, Indigenous Peoples Day. The week is called Indigenous Peoples Week.

Episode 1: "A Very 'Short Trip' " (Originally aired July 6, 2008)
The 17 contestants arrive at a beach where they must jump into the choppy water to get to shore. Right away, Midget Mac is targeted for being unable to get off the boat easily but 12 Pack lifted him up and put him on land. The contestants then walk up a beach where they find host Craig Jackson. They are told to run into the mansion and make themselves comfortable. Upon entering the mansion, alliances are start to form. Destiney, Heather, Heat and 12 Pack form an alliance and old friends Whiteboy, Chance, and Real do the same. Mr. Boston find himself without a bed, but later Mr. Boston finds a bed that Megan and Brandi C hid from him. Next Jackson calls them up one by one and asks them what they would do if they won the grand prize money of $250,000. After they answer he signs the check with their name on it for that amount. Jackson then tells the contestants that they must dress in a bikini for their challenge. Once outside, the challenge is revealed that contestants must get the most amount of money from a money machine. Megan and Brandi C are disqualified and Midget Mac and Chance choose not to participate. The top 3 are revealed as Hoopz, Destiney, and Whiteboy. The top 2 are Hoopz and White Boy, making them team captains. Once back inside the house Rodeo attempts to convince Midget Mac to apologize to Hoopz for calling her a hoe and some degrading names that anger both the women and men of the house, but to no avail. Meanwhile, contestants attempt to make deals to remain in the competition. Mr. Boston approaches Whiteboy and says that they should remain allies because they are both Jewish. At the elimination ceremony Hoopz chooses Rodeo, 12 Pack, The Entertainer, Toasteee, Heather, and Pumkin. Whiteboy chooses Chance, Real, Mr. Boston (saying he's doing so "for mental purposes only"), Heat, Destiney, and Megan. Heat is unhappy to be on Whiteboy's team, as he wanted to be on the same team with 12 Pack. The bottom three were Brandi C, Midget Mac, and Nibblz. Nibblz and Brandi C. try to show off their strength by giving a speech and doing push-ups, where Brandi hurts her ankle, while Nibblz does ten perfect ones. Midget Mac refuses to give a speech. Hoopz then picks Nibblz leaving Whiteboy with the final decision of who to choose last. He ends up choosing Brandi. Midget Mac therefore is not chosen by Hoopz or Whiteboy, being the first eliminated.<br />

The date of Columbus' arrival in the Americas is celebrated in many countries in Latin America, although not in Brazil, (and in some Latino communities in the United States) as the Día de la Raza ("day of the race"), commemorating the first encounters of Europe and Native Americans. The day was first celebrated in Argentina in 1917, Venezuela in 1921, Chile in 1923, and Mexico in 1928. The day was also celebrated under this title in Spain until 1957, when it was changed to the Día de la Hispanidad ("Hispanic Day"), and in Venezuela until 2002, when it was changed to the Día de la Resistencia Indígena (Day of Indigenous Resistance).

The cell phones the teams received by Craig at the previous elimination ceremony rang with the message that they must choose different captains. Chance insists on being the captain for the Green team, while the Gold team unanimously selects Rodeo. Destiney witnesses the Green team poorly strategizing, and asks if she can step up as captain, and then they make her the captain. The challenge was a reference to the event on Flavor of Love 2, when H-Town and Saaphyri involved themselves in a fist fight over a bed. The bed was to be suspended over water, and when someone steps over a certain line, one half of the bed drops. The object was to use giant sticks to knock the opponent off the bed. The team that received the most points out of five rounds would be crowned the winning team. Whiteboy and 12 Pack battle, which results in a point for the Green team. The Entertainer and Heat are up next, where The Entertainer knocks Heat's stick out of his hands which results in a disqualification. The Gold team therefore ties with the Green team. Real and Hoopz battle next, and Hoopz ends up victorious although Real lies and says it was because he didn't want to harm a girl. Rodeo and Chance were next to compete, and Rodeo got her head stuck in the wires, literally choking her, and instead of continuing to beat her, Chance freed Rodeo and the Green team was a point away from winning. The next two were chosen as Mr. Boston and Nibblz. Mr. Boston won the match, giving the Green team the win. The Gold team selected Pumkin, Nibblz, and Toastee as the bottom three for the round because of their apparent weakness. Destiney, as the captain of the winning team, was in charge of the elimination. Before meeting with Destiney, Pumkin and Toastee formed an alliance in hope of eliminating Nibblz. To give them time together, the four sat and watched a Mexican dance ensemble perform. While dancing along, Toastee pretended to trip and hurt her ankle severely, even asking for medical attention. Pumkin needed to step up, so she made up the story that she had an eating disorder and began to cry. Destiney, believing Pumkin was weak, left the bottom two as Nibblz and Toastee. Ironically, this was the same bottom two during Flavor of Love 2, when Toastee left due to Nibblz ratting out her porn career. Destiney decided because of Toastee's supposed ankle injury, Nibblz was the biggest threat and had her check voided.

Between 1921 and 2002, Venezuela had celebrated Día de la Raza along with many other Latin American nations. The holiday was officially established in 1921 under President Juan Vicente Gómez. In 2002, under president Hugo Chávez, the name was changed to Día de la Resistencia Indígena (Day of Indigenous Resistance) to commemorate the Indigenous people's resistance to European settlement. On the 2004 Day of Indigenous Resistance, activists toppled a statue of Columbus in Caracas. The pro-Chávez, left-wing website Aporrea wrote: "Just like the statue of Saddam in Baghdad, that of Columbus the tyrant also fell this October 12, 2004 in Caracas." The famous toppling of Saddam Hussein's statue had occurred the previous year.

Opposition to Columbus Day
Episode 3: "Heat's a Crowd" (Originally aired July 20, 2008)
In A People's History of the United States, American historian Howard Zinn discusses the cruelty Columbus inflicted upon Native Americans, which Zinn says was comparable to the genocidal acts of World War II. Zinn maintains Columbus was a religious fanatic with an obsession of eliminating non-Christians, by means of murder, conversion, or at the very least, enslavement. He claims that Columbus was in search of personal wealth and fame, and was willing to step over others or even kill them to achieve it, and that Columbus may have used more force than he admitted to his superiors. However, some assume that Columbus' subordinates were more responsible for the vast majority of the carnage carried out. Columbus himself claimed that he warned his men against taking advantage of the natives, as he had planned to eventually convert them to Christianity. A Spanish priest who traveled to Hispaniola wrote that he was appalled to witness dehumanizing acts of cruelty being inflicted on the Native Americans, such as torture used to subjugate their leaders. Many of the natives ended up dying from starvation, disease, or simply being overworked.
Craig sent the contestants a message informing them to choose new captains, and hinting at the idea that the challenge would involve using their mouths. Because Mr. Boston scored the winning point for the Green Team at the previous challenge, he was chosen as captain while the Gold Team went with The Entertainer. The teams also had to pair up their members. Expecting the challenge to consist of gross foods they would have to eat, the Green Team paired up weak people with strong people so that every pair would earn a point. However, they were surprised to find the challenge was a reference to the event in which New York and Flavor Flav shared a long, steamy kiss at dinner. Chance, being paired with Mr. Boston, immediately said he wouldn't compete in the challenge. Heather led the strategy of teasing Chance, saying a picture of the kiss would pop up on TMZ, and Chance fell for it leading to the Green Team's disqualification. Other members of the Green Team scolded Chance for refusing to lock lips with Mr. Boston for just one second, but his brother Real supported the decision. Heat was angry that Chance didn't kiss Mr. Boston so he threw a towel at Chance. Chance " threatened to kick Heat's ass"..Heat and Chance got into a heated argument and Destiney defended him. Chance and Destiney then argued and when Heat failed to take up for his "girlfriend" when she was defending him in the beginning she ended things with Heat and moved on to The Entertainer. Meanwhile, Heather and 12 Pack's relationship took a turn when Megan egged on 12 Pack into flirting with her. Heather lost all trust with 12 Pack. At the vault, the Green Team was split and didn't make a decision for the bottom three in the time limit. Therefore, as captain of the Gold Team, The Entertainer was granted the ability to choose the bottom three himself. He chose Megan, Heat, and Mr. Boston, infuriating his team because of the lack of stronger players. The four were given a chance to talk before eliminations at lunch on the beach, where Mr. Boston pretended to vomit in hopes of looking weak. The Entertainer lashed out at Megan for starting trouble between 12 Pack and Heather, and she got teary-eyed. The Entertainer was certain on sending Megan home for personal reasons, but also contemplated sending Heat out for threatening his potential romance with Destiney. At the elimination ceremony, Mr. Boston and Heat both said Megan should leave and Megan joked she wanted Mr. Boston to stay, because she felt an attraction to him. Mr. Boston received his check first, and The Entertainer called Heat to get his check, only to tell him he was being eliminated. Megan was safe, and Heat had his check voided.

Opposition to the holiday cites this cruelty committed by those under Columbus' leadership and that of many of the following European colonists. Columbus directly brought about the demise of many Taino (Arawak) Native Americans on the island of Hispaniola, and the arrival of the Europeans indirectly caused the decline in population of many indigenous peoples by introducing diseases previously unknown in the New World. An estimated 85% of the Native American population was wiped out within 150 years of Columbus' arrival in America, due largely to diseases such as smallpox that spread among Native populations. Additionally, ensuing war and the appropriation of land and material wealth by European colonists also contributed to the decline of the indigenous populations in the Americas.
Episode 4: "Bamboozlin' Gone Bad" (Originally aired July 27, 2008)
At the start of the episode, 12 Pack proposes a plan to get rid of Whiteboy. Destiney, Megan, Brandi C., and Mr. Boston were to throw the challenge, allowing the Gold Team to win and eliminate Whiteboy. Craig sent the teams a message telling them that the challenges would be a test of teamwork, and that they would have to launch their team to victory. 12 Pack was selected as captain for the Gold Team, and Chance for the Green Team. The challenge, "Chicken Catapult" was a reference to the event in which Hottie served Flavor Flav's mother a raw chicken during Flavor of Love. The teams had to construct the catapult, then launch the raw chickens and catch five to win. The builders were Pumkin, Toastee, and 12 Pack on the Gold Team and Megan, Chance, and Mr. Boston on the Green Team. Megan and Mr. Boston followed through with the plan to purposely fail at the challenge, allowing the Gold Team to finish the building first. Rodeo and The Entertainer catch the first chicken for the Gold Team. Then, Hoopz and Heather catch two more chickens. The Green Team finally finishes building their catapult, and instantly Real and Whiteboy catch a chicken. Rodeo and The Entertainer then catch another chicken for the Gold Team. Real and Whiteboy fight hard to stay in the challenge, and catch another chicken. The score is 4-3 with the Gold Team winning. Rodeo gets smacked in the head with one of the chickens and Destiney is hit on her arm. Through all the injuries, Hoopz and Heather catch the fifth and final chicken for the Gold Team and claim the win. Whiteboy confronted Megan after the challenge and insisted his strength was needed for the Green Team to be successful. Megan agreed, but had Whiteboy promise her safety from future vault meetings. At the vault, Destiney and Brandi C. were immediately nominated for the bottom three, while Mr. Boston fought hard to keep his check out of the box. Whiteboy and Mr. Boston had a brief struggle to put the check in the box with only 53 seconds left, but Mr. Boston failed. At the power outing, 12 Pack and the bottom three had lunch together. 12 Pack tried to comprehend why Whiteboy didn't go in the box, but was unpleased with the answers. Mr. Boston emotionally broke down during one on one time with 12 Pack. The Gold Team requests that 12 Pack sends Destiney home, but he is skeptical because of his alliance to her. Pumkin and Toastee establish a rift between the Gold Team. At the elimination ceremony, Brandi C tells Mr. Boston to tell the truth and tell everyone that he threw the challenge. 12 Pack first chooses Destiney to be safe from elimination. Brandi C. receives her check, and Mr. Boston's check is voided.

Michael Berliner, of the Ayn Rand Institute, has defended celebration of Columbus Day, hailing the European conquest of North America and describing the indigenous culture as “a way of life dominated by fatalism, passivity, and magic.”<ref>Blackfoot Physics: A Journey Into The Native American Universe, by F. ====Episode 5: "Cry Me A River" (Originally aired August 3, 2008)====
*Leif Erikson Day
Craig left the 13 remaining contestants a message stating that they'd go over the edge for the next challenge. Toastee stepped up as captain for the Gold Team, and Real did the same for the Green Team. Before the challenge began, an alliance was confirmed between Toastee, Pumkin, Hoopz, Real, Chance, and Whiteboy of the Green Team. The teams were shocked to learn the challenge was a reference to every dramatic event that happened prior to I Love Money, mostly involving tears. The Gold Team had to sit someone out because of their advantage with more members. Hoopz was left out because of her inability to get emotional. Craig announced to the players that there were five tools to help them draw tears, meaning one member of each team needed to cry naturally. Brandi C. and Rodeo were selected to cry naturally for the Green and Gold team, respectively. Pumkin easily cried by rubbing cayenne in her eyes. Heather successfully used the onions to cry, followed by The Entertainer and his tweezers. 12 Pack followed suit by putting hot sauce in his eyes, and Toastee asked him to smack her in order for her to tear up. Rodeo was the only member of the Gold Team who needed to cry when the Green Team started to catch up. Brandi C. attempted to gag herself, while Real was finding little luck with the tweezers. Rodeo finally cried when she thought about her son being miles away, giving the Gold Team the win. Later on, The Entertainer becomes determined to save Destiney, and they even attempt to stage a fight to throw off suspicions of an alliance, but to no avail. At the vault, Craig assured everyone that he would stay for the whole fifteen minutes because of the potential fight that happened last round. Brandi voluntarily put her check in the box. Destiney was unanimously voted in the bottom three, and Real volunteered to put his check in. Toastee took the three to an outing that involved snorkeling, where Real injured himself on the rocks after he thought he spotted sharks. Destiney reminded Toastee of the time when Destiney had her back, and Toastee promised to repay her. Toastee spent one on one time with Real, and announced she was having doubts about what to do. During the elimination ceremony, Brandi C. received her check first. Destiney was called up, but was told she was to be eliminated because Real was Toastee's "boy". Destiney had her check voided and gave a kiss to The Entertainer on her way out.

Episode 6: "Blonde Leading the Blonde" (Originally aired August 10, 2008)
Craig tells the contestants that in this next challenge they will be saving more than just their team if they win. Megan and Brandi C from the Green Team approach Toastee and offer her an alliance with them and Pumkin. Their plan is to take out the Stallionaires (Real, Chance and Whiteboy). Toastee likes the idea but needs to check with Pumkin. Pumkin isn't so sure she can trust them because she doesn't like Megan from her comment earlier towards Pumkin. Later, at the challenge, the contestants are told that they must save four Midget Macs from the ocean, similar to the events of I Love New York 2. The team captains are Pumkin and Brandi C. Because the Gold Team has two extra members, Pumkin must select two people to sit out but can't select Hoopz because she sat out last time. Pumkin picks Rodeo and The Entertainer. The competition starts and 12 Pack and Chance dash towards the water. 12 Pack swims very quickly, but Chance, who is wearing a life jacket, does a doggy paddle. 12 Pack goes to the farthest Midget Mac and begins bringing it back when Chance gets to his, which is the second-farthest. They get to the shore and the rest of their team can now put the Macs on a stretcher and bring them behind their team lines. Next out are Heather and Megan, who go after the second farthest and second closet Mac respectively, and Heather returns first. Next, Toastee and Pumkin go together to the closest one, which is submerged underwater. It is attached by a clip which Toastee can't undo, but Pumkin refuses to help her, leaving Toastee to waste time. Megan returns and Whiteboy goes out for the farthest Midget Mac. Whiteboy returns, and Real and Brandi C go together to their closest and final Mac. Toastee and Pumkin finally get their Midget Mac free and start binging him to shore as he falls apart. Hoopz goes for the second closest Mac and returns before Brandi C and Real get theirs back meaning the Gold Team wins. After the challenge Megan tries to convince Pumkin that she needs to eliminate the Stallionaires, as the Green Team has only five members; Brandi C and Megan will definitely be put in the box, but so must someone else. Pumkin as Paymaster is unsure if she should break her alliance with the Stallionaires or not. In the vault, Megan and Brandi C get put in the box and Chance volunteers himself to go in. At their power outing with Pumkin, they go to a spa, but Chance hardly talks and acts like he'd rather be anywhere else, stating that since him and Pumkin are already in alliance he doesn't need to prove himself. When Megan calls him out for not trying to save himself, he yells at her. Pumkin is then given time to spend one-on-one and chooses Megan because she had been wanting to tell Pumkin something in private. Megan tells Pumkin that she needs to get rid of Chance because in an alliance with him, he'll treat her badly. Megan also says that she is the only one that hasn't been captain on her team, so should Pumkin keep Megan, if Green Team wins Pumkin will stay. And even if someone else is captain, Megan and Brandi C will throw the challenge to save her. Back at the house, Hoopz tries to convince Pumkin to get rid of Megan because she is manipulative, and Hoopz thinks she can control Pumkin. At elimination, Pumkin gives her first check to Brandi C. Then she calls up Megan, and Chance knows that this means she's going to tell her she's out. Pumkin states every reason she doesn't like Megan and why she shouldn't trust her and then gives her the check, thus eliminating Chance. 12 Pack is happy someone finally took out a Stallionarie, but Hoopz, Whiteboy, Rodeo and Real freak out and get very upset. A shocked Chance gets his check voided and leaves.

Columbus' arrival in the Americas

Columbus celebrations commemorate the Genoese explorer's first expedition across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. Columbus, on commission by the Spanish monarchy, was hoping to find a new naval route to India and the other nations of the East, but instead found the American continent which was virtually unknown to Europeans at the time. Columbus's sailor Rodrigo de Triana was the first on the voyage to spot land in the New World; he found the island the natives called Guanahani at approximately 2:00 AM on October 12, 1492. The exact location of this island is unknown, though it was somewhere in the Bahamas. Columbus's expedition launched the first large-scale European colonization of the Americas.

United States observance

The first Columbus Day celebration was held in 1792, when New York City celebrated the 300th anniversary of his landing in the New World. In 1892, President Benjamin Harrison called upon the people of the United States to celebrate Columbus Day on the 400th anniversary of the event.

Some Italian-Americans observe Columbus Day as a celebration of their heritage, the first occasion being in New York City on October 12, 1866.[1] [2] Columbus Day was popularized as a holiday in the United States by a lawyer, a son of Genoese immigrants who came to California.

States and city observations

California

The city of Berkeley celebrates Indigenous People's Day instead of Columbus Day every year with a pow wow and Native American market.

Colorado

The Columbus Day parade in Denver has been protested by Native American groups and their supporters for nearly two decades. Denver has the longest-running parade in the United States. [3]

Hawaii

Discoverer's Day is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Hawaii; it honors Captain James Cook as the first European to document Hawaiian society

Neither Columbus Day nor Discoverer's Day is regarded as a holiday by State government;[4] state, city and county government offices and schools are open for business on Columbus Day, while Federal government offices are closed.

Massachusetts

The city of Boston, which has a large Italian population, marks the occasion on the Sunday before Columbus Day with a parade through the city that alternates each year between East Boston and the North End.

New York

In New York State, Columbus Day is a holiday, as government offices and public schools are closed. However, the stock markets remain open.[5]

Nevada

Columbus Day is not a legal holiday in Nevada, but it is a day of observance. Schools and state, city and county government offices are open for business on Columbus Day.[6]

South Dakota

In the state of South Dakota, the day is officially a state holiday known as "Native American Day", not Columbus Day.[7]

Virginia

The second Monday in October is a legal holiday in Virginia: Columbus Day and Yorktown Victory Day, honoring Christopher Columbus, and the final victory at Yorktown in the Revolutionary War.[8]

Día de la Raza

Venezuelan observance

Current state (June 6, 2006) of the Columbus Walk in Caracas. The statue was knocked down by activists after a "public judgment" during the celebrations of the Day of the Indigenous Resistance (October 12) in 2004[9][10]

The pro-Chávez, left-wing website Aporrea wrote: "Just like the statue of Saddam in Baghdad, that of Columbus the tyrant also fell this October 12, 2004 in Caracas."[11] The famous toppling of Saddam Hussein's statue had occurred the previous year.

Opposition to Columbus Day

A Spanish priest who traveled to Hispaniola wrote that he was appalled to witness dehumanizing acts of cruelty being inflicted on the Native Americans, such as torture used to subjugate their leaders.[citation needed] Many of the natives ended up dying from starvation, disease, or simply being overworked.

Opposition to the holiday cites this cruelty committed by those under Columbus' leadership and that of many of the following European colonists. Columbus directly brought about the demise of many Taino (Arawak) Native Americans on the island of Hispaniola,[citation needed] and the arrival of the Europeans indirectly caused the decline in population of many indigenous peoples by introducing diseases previously unknown in the New World. An estimated 85% of the Native American population was wiped out within 150 years of Columbus' arrival in America, due largely to diseases such as smallpox that spread among Native populations.[citation needed] Additionally, ensuing war and the appropriation of land and material wealth by European colonists also contributed to the decline of the indigenous populations in the Americas.[12]

In the summer of 1990, 350 Native Americans, representatives from all over the hemisphere, met in Quito, Ecuador, at the first Intercontinental Gathering of Indigenous People in the Americas, to mobilize against the quincentennial celebration of Columbus Day. The following summer, in Davis, California, more than a hundred Native Americans gathered for a follow-up meeting to the Quito conference. They declared October 12, 1992, International Day of Solidarity with Indigenous People. The largest ecumenical body in the United States, the National Council of Churches, called on Christians to refrain from celebrating the Columbus quincentennial, saying, "What represented newness of freedom, hope, and opportunity for some was the occasion for oppression, degradation and genocide for others."[13]

Michael Berliner, of the Ayn Rand Institute, has defended celebration of Columbus Day, hailing the European conquest of North America and describing the indigenous culture as “a way of life dominated by fatalism, passivity, and magic.”[14] Western civilization, Berliner claimed, brought “reason, science, self-reliance, individualism, ambition, and productive achievement” to a people who were based in “primitivism, mysticism, and collectivism”, and to a land that was “sparsely inhabited, unused, and underdeveloped.”[15]
