AOU received its accreditation from Open University in December 2003. The AOU works to develop human resources in the Arab World needed for the job market and allowing exposure to and use of current technologies.

The AOU has a widespread presence with branches in several cities across the Middle East and North Africa, including Al-Hasa, Dammam, Ha'il, Jeddah, Medina, Riyadh, Amman, Bahrain, Beirut, Ardiya, Cairo, Oman, Khartoum, and Al-Bireh, Palestine. The first phase of AOU was launched in October 2002 in Kuwait, Lebanon, and Jordan. Subsequent branches were opened in Bahrain, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia in 2003, in Oman in February 2008, and in Sudan in September 2013. In May 2015, AOU signed an agreement to open a new branch in Palestine with the Palestinian Ministry of Higher Education.
Teaching methods
As a partner with British Open University, AOU uses the same methods of teaching, and a variety of methods for distance learning, including written and audio materials, the internet, disc-based software and television programmes.

The AOU offers a range of academic programmes taught in English.
Materials are composed of in-house (UKOU) and external academic contributors, and from third-party materials. For most courses, students are supported by tutors ('associate lecturers') who can provide feedback and tutorials on their work via face-to-face, by telephone, and/or the internet.
