Judgment Day 2005 was the seventh annual Judgment Day professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). The event took place on May 22 2005 at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.[2]

The main event was an "I Quit" match for the WWE Championship between John Cena and John "Bradshaw" Layfield, which Cena won after Layfield quit as Cena was about to hit him with a large exhaust pipe.[3] The main matches on the undercard were Rey Mysterio versus Eddie Guerrero and Kurt Angle versus Booker T.[4][5]

Report

Background

The main feud heading into the event was between John Cena and John "Bradshaw" Layfield (JBL) over the WWE Championship. The previous month at WrestleMania 21, Cena defeated JBL to win the WWE Championship.[6] On the April 7 edition of SmackDown!, SmackDown! General Manager Theodore Long, booked a series of Number One contender's matches, after JBL, Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, The Big Show, Booker T, and Kurt Angle all demanded a title shot for the WWE title.[7][8] The first match that Long announced was between JBL and Rey Mysterio. Mysterio controlled most of the match, performing a variety of his signature moves. During the match, it saw interference by Orlando Jordan and Eddie Guerrero. Moments afterwards, JBL kicked Guerrero in the back. Which infuriated Guerrero to attack JBL and break the pinfall, after Mysterio performed the 619 and covered JBL for the pin. As a result, JBL won the match by disqualification.[7][8] The following week on SmackDown!, Guerrero and Kurt Angle were scheduled for the second contender's match.[9][10] Angle advanced to the finals, as he went onto defeat Guerrero.[9][10] That same night, Cena went onto unveil a spinner belt version of the WWE title. But, before the unveiling of the spinner belt, JBL came out wearing the original WWE title.[9][10] On the April 21 edition of SmackDown!, Booker T and Big Show were booked in another series of contender match. The match, however, ended in a double disqualification after interference by Kurt Angle and JBL.[11][12] Which led to Teddy Long booking a Fatal Four-Way match the following week on SmackDown!.[11][12] The Fatal Four-Way match saw JBL as the winner and the Number One contender at Judgment Day for Cena's title, after he pinned Angle for the win.[13][14] On the May 5 edition of SmackDown!, Cena proposed that he would defend the title against JBL in an I Quit match.[15][16] Two weeks later, on the May 19 edition of SmackDown!, JBL faced Scotty 2 Hotty in a match. In which, Scotty won after JBL was disqualified for ignoring the referee's count. After the match, JBL assaulted Scotty in which JBL demanded that Scotty say "I quit", but JBL continued his assaults as he choked Scotty with a leather belt, which led to Scotty saying "I quit".[17][18] That same night, Cena was scheduled in a Handicap match against the Basham Brothers (Doug and Danny Basham). In which it saw Cena win, after he performed an FU on Danny Basham.[17][18] Throughout the match, JBL, who accompanied the Basham's to the ring, got on the microphone and yelled at Cena to say "I quit".[17][18]
