Vittorio Merloni (Fabriano, born 30 April 1933) is an Italian businessman and industrialist. He is the chairman of Indesit Company, a multinational white goods producer based in the Marche region of Italy, and of Fineldo, the Italian holding company that controls Gruppo Merloni.

Biography

Vittorio Merloni has a degree in economics and commerce (Perugia). He is married to Franca Carloni and has four children: Maria Paola, Andrea, Antonella and Aristide.

In 1960 he started work in the family business and in 1975 he became chairman of the newly formed Merloni Elettrodomestici (now Indesit Company).

In 1980 he became president of Confindustria, a post he held for four years. In 1984, the year he was made a “Cavaliere del lavoro”, he was elected president of Centromarca, an Italian brand association, a post he held till 1988.

In 2001 he began a four-year presidency of Assonime, an Italian association of public limited companies. In the same year he received an honorary degree in engineering from the Politecnico di Milano. Since then he has received various awards and acknowledgements: in 2003, two years after Indesit Company took over Hotpoint, a UK brand, he was made a Commander of the British Empire.

In 2004 he received the Leonardo Award for Internationalization and in 2005 the GEI Prize in New York.

He was a director of Telecom Italia from 2006 to 2007.
