Konohamaru in Part II

Konohamaru (木ノ葉丸), named after the village he lives in: Konoha, is the grandson of the Third Hokage and by extension the nephew of Asuma Sarutobi. Konohamaru usually hangs out with his two friends, Udon and Moegi. Together, they call themselves the "Konohamaru Corps" ("Konohamaru Ninja Squad" in the English dub). He and his teammates constantly try to sneak up on Naruto Uzumaki with poor variations of the Cloak of Invisibility Technique. Konohamaru's biggest influence is Naruto himself, looking up to him as a role model. At various points Naruto and Konohamaru appear to have common bonds between them, such as use of the perverted jutsu, determination, and a fiery attitude. Konohamaru ends many of his sentences with "kore" (コレ, a laughing signal or appreciation), much like Naruto's "Dattebayo!"

At the start of the series, Konohamaru feels unacknowledged due to his status as the Third Hokage's grandson, and is often recognized through that link. Although he had only recently begun to attend the Academy, he constantly attempted surprise attacks on his grandfather so he could defeat him and acquire the acknowledgment of the Hokage name. Though Ebisu, his tutor, tried to discourage this, it is only through Naruto's influence that Konohamaru realized that there would be no shortcuts to becoming Hokage. Instead, it is a dream that would take many years of hard work and discipline to realize.

Konohamaru makes a few staggered appearances as Part I progresses, either trying to spend time with Naruto or simply trying to be helpful. After his grandfather's death, Konohamaru briefly loses interest in Naruto's guidance, feeling the restoration of the village to be more important. When Tsunade attempts to take on the position of Hokage, Konohamaru is unaccepting of her due to his opinion that she can't compare to his grandfather. After Tsunade demonstrates her strength and medical abilities for him, however, Konohamaru accepts her as the Third's successor.

After the timeskip, the Konohamaru Corps have become a Genin team under Ebisu. In the anime, Konohamaru and his team were given the same mission as Naruto's team were when they first became Genin: retrieving a runaway cat. Konohamaru states that he will become the seventh Hokage and that the sixth would be Naruto. Konohamaru's scarf is even longer post-timeskip, stretching at least several feet beyond his neck. Konohamaru has also learned the Shadow Clone Technique, further emulating Naruto. He demonstrates it with a smaller version of Naruto's Harem Technique, first transforming into two naked women, for which Sakura beats him, then transforming into Sasuke Uchiha and Sai (also naked), for which Naruto beats him, and each was very distracted by the other.

Moegi

File:Moegi.jpg
Moegi
File:Moegi timeskip.JPG
Moegi in Part II

Moegi (モエギ) is the friend of Konohamaru and Udon. She is the kunoichi in the Genin-team led by Ebisu. Her cheeks seem to always have a red blush to them. Moegi appears to have a crush on Konohamaru, and idolizes Sakura Haruno. She also seems to fall for Sasuke Uchiha's charm after he crushes a rock in his hand that both Moegi and Sakura proclaim as "cool".

Nawaki

File:Nawaki2.jpg
Nawaki

Nawaki (縄樹), meaning "rope wood", was the younger brother of Tsunade. Like Moegi, his cheeks seemed to always have a red blush to them. He also looked a lot like Naruto Uzumaki. He was eager to fight in the war when he became a Genin, because he wanted to protect his village. This was also the reason why he wanted to become Hokage like his grandfather, the First Hokage. Proud of her brother's determination, Tsunade gave him their grandfather's necklace. Unfortunately, Nawaki died on the battlefield the next day. According to Orochimaru, he was so mutilated that Tsunade wouldn't have recognized him. After Nawaki's death, Tsunade lobbied for adding a medical ninja to each ninja team, so that the survival rate would go up. Nawaki was one of the two people Orochimaru offered to bring back to life in exchange for Tsunade's healing of his arms. The other person was Dan, Tsunade's deceased boyfriend.

Udon

File:Udon timeskip.JPG
Udon in Part II

Udon (ウドン) is the friend of Konohamaru and Moegi. He is in the Genin-team led by Ebisu. He seems to have a perpetually runny nose and seems to be very sleepy. Udon states many times that he loves math, as he is usually seen writing math problems during class. Udon idolizes Sasuke Uchiha, stating that if he was lucky enough he would be just like Sasuke. "Udon" is also a type of Japanese noodle.

Kotetsu Hagane

Kotetsu Hagane (はがねコテツ, Hagane Kotetsu) and his comrade, Izumo Kamizuki, attempt to hold their very own unofficial first test of the Chunin Exam. Before the exam begins, Kotetsu uses False Surroundings Technique to change the meeting room's number. They then try to persuade the Genin who show up to quit right there and then, disguised as Genin who claim to have failed the exams three times in a row. They later appear as proctors for the first test. In the anime, after the Fifth Hokage takes office, Izumo and Kotetsu act as her personal assistants, and also become the patrolmen of the entrance/exit gate of Konoha.

He and Izumo make their Part II debut tagging along with Asuma Sarutobi and Shikamaru Nara as members of the Niju Shotai. During a battle with Akatsuki member Kakuzu, Izumo summons an extremely large and ornate weapon resembling a conch shell. The attack fails and both are attacked by Kakuzu, but both are saved by the arrival of reinforcements.

Trivia

  • The name "Hagane" means steel or "full metal" (the condition metal is in once it has been properly alloyed for sword making) and "Kotetsu" means "Little steel".
  • "Kotetsu" is a common name for a make of katanas in many video games. There was also a Japanese battleship called Kotetsu. Kotetsu's partner, Izumo, also shares his name with a Japanese ship.

Hana Inuzuka

Hana Inuzuka (犬塚ハナ, Inuzuka Hana) is the older sister of Kiba Inuzuka and an excellent and respected veterinarian. Her canine companions are called the Haimaru Sankyodai. Hana plays a large role in episode 184, "Inuzuka Kiba's Long Day" where she treats Akamaru's illness. She has a tattoo on her upper right arm that resembles a flower. "Hana" means "nose" or "flower".

Izumo Kamizuki (神月イズモ, Kamizuki Izumo) and his comrade, Kotetsu Hagane, attempt to hold their very own unofficial first test of the Chunin Exam. Before the exam begins, Kotetsu uses False Surroundings Technique to change the meeting room's number. They then try to persuade the Genin who show up to quit right there and then, disguised as Genin who claim to have failed the exams three times in a row. He and Kotetsu make their Part II debut tagging along with Asuma Sarutobi and Shikamaru Nara as members of the Niju Shotai. During a battle with Akatsuki member Kakuzu, Izumo uses Syrup Capture Field to snare Kakuzu while Kotetsu attacks. The attack fails and both are attacked by Kakuzu, but both are saved by the arrival of reinforcements.

Mizuki

File:Mizuki.jpg
Mizuki

Mizuki (ミズキ) was Iruka Umino's assistant instructor at the Ninja Academy. After Naruto Uzumaki failed again to pass the Academy graduation exams, Mizuki devised a plan to steal Konoha's forbidden scroll using Naruto as a scapegoat, intent upon learning the powerful forbidden jutsu within. Mizuki's scheme goes according to plan until Iruka gets to Naruto before he does. A fight then takes place that ultimately ends with Naruto saving Iruka's life by creating hundreds of shadow clones, which he learned from the forbidden scroll prior to Iruka finding him, and he beats Mizuki to a bloody pulp.

Mizuki reappears in one of the anime's filler arcs, where it is revealed that he was imprisoned in the "Konoha Strict Correctional Facility" after being defeated by Naruto. Although the official report indicates that he stole the scroll for his own personal benefit, it is revealed that Mizuki stole it for Orochimaru. After Mizuki leads a prison revolt, he is shown to have a strange tattoo on his right arm, given to him by Orochimaru and a blueprint for a device to mix different ingredients into a potion. After creating and consuming the potion, Mizuki transforms into a tiger-like man-beast with doubled speed and power. Mizuki, however, is yet another victim of Orochimaru's manipulation, and turns into an angry, shriveled, and powerless old man when the potion dissipates. Tsunade eventually heals him back to his normal state and interrogates him about the whereabouts of Orochimaru.

Flashbacks show that Mizuki was a childhood friend of Iruka, which caused Iruka to hold back while fighting him. Later, however, Mizuki states that it was one-sided and that he had never cared about Iruka.

Trivia

  • According to the official databooks, Mizuki's favorite food is sushi and his least favorite food is ramen. His favorite phrase is "positive thinking".
  • "Mizuki" is typically a female name, with possible meanings including "water tree" and "beautiful moon", but because it is written in katakana rather than kanji, the meaning of the name is unknown.

Shikamaru Nara

Yoshino Nara

File:Nara Yoshino.jpg
Yoshino Nara

Yoshino Nara (奈良ヨシノ, Nara Yoshino) is the mother of Shikamaru Nara and the wife of Shikaku Nara. Though very strict and sometimes overbearing, she also has a sweet side. She has her husband "whipped", as her son calls it, and both her husband and son are rather scared of her. Shikamaru calls her a "troublesome woman".

Rin

File:Rin.jpg
Rin
  • Age: ? (presumed deceased)
  • Height: ?
  • Weight: ?
  • Birthday: November 152
  • Blood Type: A2

Rin (リン) was a medical ninja and the teammate of Kakashi Hatake and Obito Uchiha under the Fourth Hokage. She was a sweet and friendly girl who cared for her teammates. She had intimate feelings for Kakashi, but he ignored her. In turn, Obito had a crush on her, but she ignored him. When Rin is captured by enemy shinobi, Obito and Kakashi went to save her. As they do so, half of Obito's body is crushed by a rockslide in his attempt to save Kakashi. At Obito's request, Rin implants Obito's remaining Sharingan eye into Kakashi's left eye socket (which had been damaged during the battle) as a late and last gift to Kakashi for becoming a Jonin. Kakashi then vows to protect her with his life, at Obito's request. Her status is currently unknown, but she is presumed deceased as Kakashi has said that everyone close to him is dead.

Trivia

  • One possible meaning of her name means "cold". More likely, however, Rin is one of the readings of the kanji hayashi, Rin () for forest/woods. Usually when used for a girl's name it's written with the kanji for suzu, Rin () or a small bell. Other characters from Konoha have names related to trees or leaves, so it is probably the former meaning.

Iwashi Tatami

File:Iwashi.jpg
Iwashi Tatami

Iwashi Tatami (たたみイワシ, Tatami Iwashi) is first seen showing Anko Mitarashi a surveillance video of Gaara and his teammates passing the second phase of the Chunin Exam unscathed. He later appears as a member of a four-man team with Raido Namiashi, Shizune, and Genma Shiranui. After Raido and Genma are defeated and left near death by the Sound Four, Iwashi wants to chase them down to avenge his comrades, but Shizune holds him back.

Obito Uchiha

File:Uchiha Obito.jpg
Obito Uchiha

Obito Uchiha (うちはオビト, Uchiha Obito) was a Chunin-level ninja featured in the Kakashi Gaiden chapters of the Naruto manga. He was part of the three-man team under the Fourth Hokage, the others being Kakashi Hatake and Rin. Obito wanted to prove his strength to Kakashi Hatake, who was his teammate and his biggest rival. Obito also seemed to have a crush Rin.

During a mission to sabotage a supply bridge, Rin was kidnapped by enemy ninja. Kakashi insisted on continuing with the mission, confident that the enemy would keep her alive for a reasonably long period of time. Obito refused and decided to rescue Rin, claiming that Kakashi's late father, Sakumo Hatake, had made the right decision in rescuing his friends at the expense of his mission. Kakashi, after realizing what was important, assisted Obito in the rescue. During the rescue Obito finally proved his strength to Kakashi by activating the Uchiha clan's special kekkei genkai, the Sharingan. When all seemed to be going well an enemy ninja attempted to bury the group in rubble. The attack would've crushed Kakashi, but Obito sacrificed himself to save Kakashi, crushing his right side completely. Obito, offered his Sharingan to Kakashi, so that he could defeat the enemy ninja and save Rin. Rin, a medical ninja, implanted Obito's left eye into Kakashi's left eye socket. Before Obito died his last thoughts were on both Kakashi and Rin, wishing that he could have spent more time with them. Obito has his name inscribed on the monument for ninja who are killed in battle.

Obito was the person who gave Kakashi his signature chronic tardiness and pioneered Kakashi's now famous line, "In the ninja world, those who don't follow the rules are considered trash, but those who don't protect their comrades are worse than trash." It is for Obito that Kakashi visits this monument every day, consequently making him consistently late for meetings, which was a trait of Obito's as well.

Iruka Umino

File:Umino Iruka.jpg
Iruka Umino

Iruka Umino (うみのイルカ, Umino Iruka) is an instructor at the Konoha Ninja Academy, characterized by the distinctive scar across his face that he has had since childhood. The name "Umino Iruka" can be taken as "umi no iruka" ("sea dolphin"). Introduced as Naruto Uzumaki's sensei, Iruka and Naruto have a special connection. Iruka relates to Naruto since he also grew up as an orphan and was around Naruto's current age when his parents were killed by the demon fox; he was the first person to acknowledge Naruto as a person of value and show concern for him. Naruto cares deeply for him, and sees Iruka as a father figure. Iruka's favorite food is the same as Naruto's; ramen (ramen from the Ichiraku Ramen Bar in particular); his least favorite food is Maze-gohan (rice with steamed vegetables). His hobby is going to the hot springs and his favorite word is "faith."

Iruka's parents were killed by the demon fox sealed inside Naruto, but he doesn't blame Naruto for what happened since he knows Naruto is not the demon fox. He is able to empathize with Naruto's need for acknowledgment because after the death of his parents, Iruka admits that he caused trouble and was a prankster to attract attention. Iruka regrets not doing more for Naruto, so he tends to be a little overprotective, often worrying that Naruto is being pushed too hard. As a result, Iruka tends to underestimate Naruto's ability and determination during the many trials he goes through to become a great ninja (though he may also remember Naruto's abysmal grades).

Little is known about Iruka's abilities, but he is clearly proficient in the basic ninjutsu and genjutsu, seen when he administers a pretest for the Chunin Exam to Team 7 and the fact that he is an academy instructor. The anime filler episodes show Iruka using Sealed Bombs Square Release (方爆法陣, Fŭbaku Hojin), which consists of setting an array of exploding tags and, once the target has entered, setting the tags to detonate if the target moves. Because this only applies to the target, meaning others can freely enter the array without harm, it is possible that Iruka is skilled in this area.

Ebisu

File:Other-74.JPG
Ebisu

Ebisu (エビス) specializes in the private training of elite ninja, as stated by Kakashi Hatake. The name "Ebisu" comes from the Japanese god Ebisu, who is usually pictured watching over the health of young children. He is Konohamaru's tutor, and dislikes the fact that Konohamaru idolizes Naruto Uzumaki, because he only sees Naruto as the container of the demon fox. His opinion of Naruto doesn't change when Naruto "defeats" him with the Harem Technique. Naruto often refers to him as the "closet pervert" because of this.

Later, Ebisu is recommended by Kakashi to train Naruto in more efficiently using jutsu. It is during this time, through being with Naruto and seeing the influence he's had on Konohamaru, that Ebisu realizes that Naruto is not just the container of the demon fox, but that he is an outstanding Konoha ninja. However, Ebisu does not get to complete Naruto's training, as he is knocked unconscious by a toad when trying to reprimand Jiraiya for spying on women in the bath house.

In Part II, Ebisu is put in charge of a Genin team with Konohamaru and his two friends, Udon and Moegi, as its members. He now wears the standard combat vest instead of his more casual outfit from the first part of the series.

Hayate Gekko

File:GekkouHayate.PNG
Hayate Gekko

Hayate Gekko (月光 ハヤテ, Gekkō Hayate) was the examiner of the preliminary matches of the Chunin Exams. The name "Gekko" means "moonlight" and "Hayate" means "quick as wind" or "hurricane". Both are names of Japanese fighter planes from World War II. At first sight, Hayate appears to not be in the best of health, as he has an unexplained chronic cough and bags under his eyes. He seems to be very skilled for his age, which Baki notes right before killing him.

Hayate is the first to discover the truth behind the secret invasion plan between the Sound and the Sand, having been spying on Baki during his meeting with Kabuto Yakushi. Kabuto offers to kill Hayate himself, but Baki does so instead as an act of good faith. Hayate tries to fight Baki with his Dance of the Crescent Moon (三日月の舞, Mikazuki no Mai, English TV "Crescent Moon Dance"), which creates three shadow clones to attack with extendable swords in a complicated sword-dancing pattern. Although Baki is impressed that Hayate could learn such a technique at such a young age, Hayate is killed regardless. Hayate's lover, Yugao Uzuki, swears that she will avenge his death, something that will prove difficult as Baki has since become an ally of Konoha.

Tsume Inuzuka

File:Inuzuka Tsume.jpg
Tsume Inuzuka

Tsume Inuzuka (犬塚ツメ, Inuzuka Tsume) is the mother of Hana and Kiba. "Tsume" means "claw" or "talon". Like most Inuzuka clan members, Tsume is tough, but cares for her family. During the invasion of Konoha, she fights alongside her dog Kuromaru.

Anko Mitarashi

File:Mitarashi Anko.jpg
Anko Mitarashi

Anko Mitarashi (みたらしアンコ, Mitarashi Anko) is the examiner for the second phase of the Chunin Exams. Anko is easygoing, tomboyish and sometimes hyperactive. According to the official databooks, Anko's favorite foods are sweet bean soup and dango (which anko and mitarashi are ingredients for). Her least favorite foods are spicy food. Her hobby is tea ceremonies and her favorite phrase is "Arriving!" Anko's bodysuit is a customized garment made of metal mesh.

Anko is a former student of Orochimaru, and was one of ten children to be branded with the Cursed Seal of Heaven. Because Anko was the only survivor, the seal was determined to have only a 10% chance of survival. Because Anko lacked the lust for power or vengeance needed to fuel the cursed seal, Orochimaru lost interest in her, though felt allowing her to live was acceptable. When they reunite during the Chunin Exams, Orochimaru awakens her cursed seal, which had remained dormant for many years. In this meeting, Anko attempts to kill Orochimaru with a murder-suicide technique he had taught her in her youth, though he is easily able to avoid it and escape.

Anko's past is explored further during one of the anime's filler arcs, where it is revealed that she was found in the Land of the Sea after Orochimaru branded her with the cursed seal and subsequently abandoned her. Although she had long believed that he had wiped her memory upon leaving her behind, revisiting the country allows her to remember that she chose to leave him instead. Anko is also shown to be able to summon blue versions of Orochimaru's snakes, a remnant of her training with him.

Ibiki Morino

File:Naruto episode 025.png
Ibiki Morino

Ibiki Morino (森乃イビキ, Morino Ibiki) is the examiner for the first part of the Chunin Exams. "Morino Ibiki" means "a snore in the forest", which clearly refers to his resemblance to a big bear. Ibiki's head is covered to hide burn marks, punctures from where screws were used, and long slash marks. The scars on his head show the signs of the physical torture he has endured in the past, and illustrates his capacity to endure pain without giving up the desired information to the enemy.

Ibiki is the commanding officer of the Konoha ANBU Torture and Interrogation Force (木ノ葉暗部拷問・尋問部隊, Konoha Anbu Gomon/Jinmon Butai), and is the designer of the Chunin Exam's first test. Described as a sadist by some, Ibiki has the ability to subject people to great suffering without ever using physical torture. His interrogational skills rely solely on his capability to torture the mind. He has complete knowledge of human psychology; by attacking a person's mind, he can gain control over their spirit.

Ibiki often refers to Naruto as "an interesting guy", saying this twice after the first part of the Chunin Exam and again after the Tea Country arc. This is likely due to the fact that Naruto will not allow himself to be intimidated by anything. In fact, Naruto was the only one to pass the Chunin Exam with a blank test during the first part, willing to face the possibility of never becoming a Chunin in order to protect his team from disqualification. Naruto's impassioned speech at the end of that exam, just before the final question is revealed, inspires confidence in the other students, and results in a greater number of passing Genin than anyone expected.

In the Tea Country filler arc, Ibiki is shown to have a younger brother, Idate, who left Konoha with Aoi Rokusho and defected to Amegakure. It was also shown that some of his larger scars were Aoi's doing. Ibiki makes his Part II debut threatening to torture Kakuzu's bounty-hunting contact in order to gain information regarding Kakuzu.

Raido Namiashi

File:Raidou.jpg
Raido Namiashi

Raido Namiashi (並足ライドウ, Namiashi Raidō) served as the Third Hokage's assistant during the Chunin Exams, and is characterized by a large scar on his left cheek. "Namiashi" means "walking pace" while "Raido" means "following blindly". After the Chunin Exams, Raido appears as a member of a four-man team with Genma Shiranui, Shizune, and Iwashi Tatami. He and Genma confront the Sound Four, who are forced to go level 2 of their cursed seals to defeat them. Raido is left critically injured, but Shizune is able to stabilize their conditions long enough to return them to Konoha. The Sound Four later comment that if it hadn't been for their cursed seals, Genma and Raido would have defeated them.

Raido appears in Part II as a member of the Niju Shotai, assisting Asuma Sarutobi's team in the fight against Akatsuki. After Aoba Yamashiro covers the area in crows, Raido, dressed in black with a black sword, is able to sneak up on and attack Kakuzu. While he is unable to damage Kakuzu, he is able to learn some valuable information about Kakuzu's technique.

Genma Shiranui

File:Shiranui Genma.jpg
Genma Shiranui

Genma Shiranui (不知火ゲンマ, Shiranui Genma) replaced Hayate Gekko as examiner of the main matches of the Chunin Exams after Hayate was killed. "Shiranui" means "phosphorescent light". Genma is often seen with a senbon in his mouth. He uses this as a weapon, spitting it out at the enemy to attack them, or to deflect ranged weapon attacks. When the invasion of Konoha begins, Genma battles Baki, presumably to a draw since both of them come out of the fight relatively unscathed.

He later appears as a member of a four-man team with Raido Namiashi, Shizune, and Iwashi Tatami. He and Raido confront the Sound Four, who are forced to go level 2 of their cursed seals to defeat them. Genma is left near-death, but Shizune is able to stabilize their conditions long enough to return them to Konoha. The Sound Four later comment that if it hadn't been for their cursed seals, Genma and Raido would have defeated them.

Aoba Yamashiro

File:Yamashiro Aoba.jpg
Aoba Yamashiro
  • Age: 302 in Part I, 32 in Part II
  • Specialization: Examiner, Bodyguard
  • Height: 178 cm2
  • Weight: 66 kg2
  • Birthday: September 32
  • Blood Type: O2
  • Voice actor: Wally Wingert

Aoba Yamashiro (山城アオバ, Yamashiro Aoba) was one of the handful of Konoha shinobi who repelled the invading forces during the invasion of Konoha. He later appears inadvertently telling Sasuke Uchiha of Itachi Uchiha's visit to Konoha, causing Sasuke to rush from the room in search of his brother. The Jonin in attendance give him blank stares, with Kurenai Yuhi calling him an idiot.

Aoba appears in Part II as a member of the Niju Shotai, assisting Asuma Sarutobi's team in the fight against Akatsuki. He demonstrates a technique involving large numbers of crows to swarm and blind the enemy. The crows seem to be dispelled like shadow clones when struck and are used to disguise Raido Namiashi's movements.

Shibi Aburame

File:Aburame Shibi.jpg
Shibi Aburame

Shibi Aburame (油女シビ, Aburame Shibi), called "Gen Aburame" in the English Naruto Trading Card Game, is the father of Shino Aburame. During the invasion of Konoha he used his bugs to draw the poison from of his son's body. It is unknown what the gourd on his back is for, but it is assumed that it is for holding more kikaichu insects.

According to the databooks, his favorite phrase is "even a one-sun-long insect has the soul of five bu" from the Konoha Hundred Leaf Collections. 寸 (sun) and 分 (bu) are the units of length used in Japan, which approximate 3 centimeters and 0.3 centimeters, respectively. 1 sun is equal to 10 bu. The insect phrase is a Japanese proverb implying you should never underestimate the power of one's spirit, no matter how minuscule one may look. The Hundred Leaf Collections (hyakuyoshu) is a reference to Man'yōshū, a famous collection of Japanese poems. The second databook also says that he is "a self-possessed figure, the pride of Aburame", suggesting that he may be the leader of the Aburame clan.

Choza Akimichi

File:Akimichi Chouza.JPG
Choza Akimichi

Choza Akimichi (秋道チョウザ, Akimichi Chōza) is the father of Choji Akimichi. Like his son, he was part of an Ino-Shika-Cho trio, together with Shikaku Nara and Inoichi Yamanaka. He, like his son, enjoys eating large amounts of foods.

Dan

File:Dan (from Naruto).jpg
Dan

Dan (ダン) was Shizune's uncle and Tsunade's boyfriend. Because his younger sister died during one of the many raids on Konoha, he aimed to be able to better protect his loved ones. For this end, he wanted to become Hokage. He died during a battle due to hemorrhage, despite Tsunade's desperate efforts to save him. His death made Tsunade hemophobic and made her leave Konoha together with Shizune.

Many years after Dan's death, Orochimaru tries to convince Tsunade to heal his arms by offering to bring Dan and Tsunade's little brother back to life. Tsunade decides against it, despite longing to see Dan and her brother again.

Hizashi Hyuga

File:Hyuuga Hizashi.jpg
Hizashi Hyuga

Hizashi Hyuga (日向ヒザシ, Hyūga Hizashi) was the father of Neji Hyuga and the twin brother of Hiashi Hyuga, but was born into the world second, which made him a branch house member. The name "Hizashi" means "sunlight" or "rays of the sun" and is specifically used to describe sunlight strong enough to cause sunburn.

Being a branch house member and father to perhaps the most powerful Hyuga in the clan put a strain on his emotions, tearing him between caring for his brother and feeling anger at being the victim of a terrible injustice. As Neji and Hinata matured, the relationship between Hizashi and Hiashi became more tense and resentful, as it slowly dawned on Hizashi that his own son, even if he turned out to be the most powerful Hyuga of the next generation, would never lead the clan. Upon sensing Hizashi's hatred for the main house, Hiashi activated the cursed seal on Hizashi's forehead, paining him to no end and bringing him inches from death.

When Hiashi killed the head shinobi from Kumogakure - who came under false pretenses of signing a peace treaty, and was in fact attempting to kidnap Hinata to gain the secret of the Byakugan - Kumogakure demanded that the body of Hiashi be delivered to them as compensation. Hizashi volunteered to be killed instead of Hiashi, thus saving his brother's life and ending his own. He did it because he truly cared for his brother, and status didn't mean everything to him. It is revealed later that he left a final letter to Neji, and it told him to never give up on changing his destiny.

Neji Hyuga

Shikaku Nara

File:Nara Shikaku.JPG
Shikaku Nara

Shikaku Nara (奈良シカク, Nara Shikaku) is the father of Shikamaru Nara. "Shika" means deer but "shikaku" can mean assassin. Like his son, he was part of an Ino-Shika-Cho trio, together with Choza Akimichi and Inoichi Yamanaka. He is married to Yoshino Nara who, as his son says, has him whipped. Despite his claim that "a woman is always tender to the man she loves", his son is never convinced. He also describes Tsunade as the "strongest and most beautiful of women" upon her return to Konoha, which Shikamaru fails to see the relevance of, his father stating that he will understand "in time"'.

As a member of the Nara clan, he raises deer, whose antlers can be used to make a medicine which halts the destructive effects of the Akimichi clan's three colored pills. When he is first seen he is portrayed as a bit of an alcoholic, and at times uses some of Shikamaru's catchphrases ("What a drag" in English, "How bothersome" in Japan). In Part II, Shikaku proves to be much better than Asuma Sarutobi when playing Shogi, as he could easily beat his son at the game while Asuma never could.

Asuma Sarutobi

Shizune

File:Shizune001.jpg
Shizune

Shizune (シズネ) is the assistant of Tsunade and a talented Medic-nin. Shizune is quite close to Tsunade, one of the few people Tsunade will trust with absolute certainty. She often uses jutsu involving poison, such as using Hidden Mouth Needles (隠口針, Fukumikuchi Hari) to spit poisonous needles, using Poison Mist (毒霧, Dokugiri) to blow poisonous gas from her mouth, or using the wrist-mounted device hidden beneath her sleeves to surprise enemies and launch poisonous needles at them with Prepared Needle Shot (仕込針弾, Shikomishindan). Unlike Tsunade, Shizune is level-headed, practical, and a rational thinker. As a result, she tends to stress over details like Tsunade's tendency to gamble and think with her heart. She often gets comically worked up over any irrational decision Tsunade makes. Shizune also looks after Tonton, Tsunade's pet pig.

After her uncle Dan died, Shizune left Konoha with Tsunade, as Tsunade's apprentice. When Orochimaru comes to Tsunade years later in an attempt to get her to heal his arms, Shizune attempts to persuade Tsunade against it, even trying to convince Tsunade to help her kill Orochimaru. When all attempts to persuade Tsunade fail, Shizune tries to use force to stop Tsunade from helping Orochimaru, though Tsunade easily defeats her. She later fights with Kabuto Yakushi in an effort to protect an incapacitated Tsunade and Naruto Uzumaki, but Kabuto proves too much for her as he easily dodges her attacks and incapacitates her as well.

When Tsunade takes on the title of Hokage, Shizune leads a team consisting of Genma Shiranui, Raido Namiashi, and Iwashi Tatami to compensate for the lack of manpower caused by the invasion of Konoha. When Genma and Raido are defeated by the Sound Four, Shizune heals their wounds. Later, she is seen leading a medical team charged with regenerating the wounds of Neji Hyuga.

In Part II, Shizune expresses concern in Tsunade's decision to allow Naruto to go out on missions, and reports this to the village elders. Although Tsunade is able to reach a compromise with the elders, Shizune doubts Tsunade's wisdom, though she does seem to regain faith later on.

Fugaku Uchiha

Fugaku Uchiha

Fugaku Uchiha (うちはフガク, Uchiha Fugaku) was the father of Sasuke Uchiha and Itachi Uchiha, and the husband of Mikoto Uchiha. He was the captain of the Konoha Military Police Force. He was often seen pushing Itachi to think of the clan; he tells him that he is the backbone of the clan and should set a good example. It is hinted that they had some sort of falling out, as Itachi felt the clan held back their potential by limiting themselves to rules which prevented change from occurring. Fugaku himself admitted that he didn't understand Itachi. He often neglected Sasuke aside from cursory inquiries to his school life, but his wife insisted that he was proud of Sasuke, which caused him to be awkward around him. Towards the end of his life he had become deeply troubled by Itachi's behavior, a concern beyond the falling out over Itachi's future role in the clan and more directed towards his growing anti-social behavior. Eventually, he even told Sasuke not to try to be like his brother, almost the exact opposite of everything he had told Sasuke before. He was later killed by Itachi.

Mikoto Uchiha

Mikoto Uchiha (うちはミコト, Uchiha Mikoto) was the mother of Sasuke Uchiha and Itachi Uchiha, and the wife of Fugaku Uchiha. She is one of the only people who acknowledges Sasuke openly, more than Itachi, although she does hint that Sasuke's father talks most about him when he is alone with her. She was killed by Itachi.

Inoichi Yamanaka (山中いのいち, Yamanaka Inoichi) is the father of Ino Yamanaka. Like his daughter, he was part of an Ino-Shika-Cho trio, together with Shikaku Nara and Choza Akimichi. Choza and Shikaku often tease him about having a daughter instead of a son.

Yugao Uzuki (卯月夕顔, Uzuki Yugao) is a member of the Konoha ANBU and Hayate Gekko's lover. "Uzuki" is the old name for April on the Japanese lunar calendar, while "Yugao" means "moonflower". After Hayate is killed by Baki, Yugao swears to avenge him, though it is unknown if she actually knows that Baki killed him. The manner of her speech towards Kakashi Hatake as her senpai seems to imply that he was her senior while he was still in ANBU.

Hokages

Konoha has had five Hokages (火影, Fire Shadow) since the First Hokage founded the village 60 years before the start of the series. The Fifth Hokage is currently still in power. The Hokages are generally the strongest shinobi of Konoha; however, as there are various extenuating circumstances involved in the selection of a Hokage, the one in power may not be the strongest ninja in the village. They also act as the leaders of the village.

First Hokage

The First Hokage

The First Hokage (初代火影, Shodai Hokage, literally "Founding" or "First Hokage") was the founder of Konoha. He was the older brother of the Second, and the grandfather of Tsunade. During his life he fought Kakuzu, but the details of their battle are never elaborated upon. He saw the people of Konoha as a part of him, and put them before anything else. His spirit even now takes a firm root in Konoha. His soul was sealed in one of the Third Hokage's shadow clones after he was resurrected by Orochimaru.

Orochimaru used his DNA for his own genetic experiments, implanting the First's DNA into sixty test subjects. Only one of the sixty, Yamato, survived. Orochimaru was attempting to duplicate the First's unique Mokuton techniques and his ability to control tailed beasts. The latter ability is assisted by the necklace that he gave to Tsunade, who subsequently lost it to Naruto Uzumaki in a bet.

  • Weight: 70.5 kg2
  • Birthday: ?
  • Blood Type: ?
  • Seiyu: Kenyu Horiuchi
  • Voice Actor: Peter Lurie
  • Unique traits: Excelled at water jutsu, did not require a water source to perform them

The Second Hokage (二代目火影, Nidaime Hokage) was the younger brother of the First and Tsunade's great uncle. He greatly contributed to Konoha's establishment as a major power. He was very proud of his superior combat ability, and was especially skillful at water jutsu (to the point that he did not require a source of water to perform them). He was the teacher of the Third Hokage, Homura Mitokado, and Koharu Utatane, and was the one to appoint the Third as his successor. His soul was sealed in one of the Third Hokage's shadow clones after Orochimaru resurrected him.

In the Tea Country arc, the former Konoha Jonin Aoi said that the Second Hokage was also famous for wielding the Raijin sword, the blade of which was composed of pure energy and could retract into the handle. Aoi's apprentice, Idate Morino, stole the sword and gave it to Aoi in the belief that he would become a Chunin after doing so. Aoi claimed that the sword made the wielder invincible, though this was clearly an overstatement on his part. Despite being composed of pure energy, the blade can be cracked and broken like a regular sword, which occurs through a combined effort between Naruto and Sasuke.

Fourth Hokage

The Fourth Hokage

The Fourth Hokage (四代目火影, Yondaime Hokage), also known as "The Leaf's Yellow Flash" (木ノ葉の黄色い閃光, Konoha no Kīroi Senkō), was the brave ninja responsible for sealing the demon fox inside Naruto Uzumaki. He is said to be the greatest ninja Konoha had ever produced. Though his skills in combat go largely unwitnessed, he was considered dangerous enough that a flee-on-sight order was given in regards to him during the Third Ninja War. Before performing the seal on the demon fox, the Fourth said that he did not want Naruto to be viewed as the container of a monster, but as a hero who saved the village from annihilation. This request, however, was not honored by the villagers, who still held much resentment for the demon fox. He was a student of Jiraiya along with two other unknown Genin, and was the sensei of Kakashi Hatake, Obito Uchiha, and Rin.

The Fourth shares many similarities with Naruto, including the same spiky blond hair, blue eyes, same techniques, the same blood type (B), and overall similar personalities as noted by Jiraiya. Itachi Uchiha noted Naruto to be the Fourth's "legacy". Furthermore, when Jiraiya was trying to force Naruto to release his demon fox chakra, he pushed Naruto off of a cliff, saying, "Forgive me, Fourth," as he did so. Beyond these, there are several minor comparisons made consistently throughout the series. Any hints to his history, or family relations have been carefully avoided, making his past one of the biggest mysteries of the series.

The Fourth created several distinctive techniques, including the Flying Thunder God Technique (飛雷神の術, Hiraishin no Jutsu), which essentially allowed him to teleport to any location with the use of a special seal, or "jutsu formula" (術式, jutsu-shiki). Via attaching the seals to kunai, the Fourth could teleport to the location of the kunais, enabling him to wipe out many opponents nearly instantaneously. He also created the Spiraling Sphere, a technique that does not rely on hand seals, but instead uses a concentration of spinning chakra in the palm that causes immense damage to its victim on contact. Later in the series it is revealed that this signature technique is actually incomplete. The Fourth had planned to add his own nature manipulation training to the Spiraling Sphere, making it even more powerful, but couldn't manage to combine the two prior to his death.
