Elizabeth Imogene Webber (formerly Lansing and Spencer) is a fictional character on the popular ABC soap opera, General Hospital and General Hospital: Night Shift. Elizabeth has been portrayed by actress Rebecca Herbst since 1997. In 1999, the role brought Herbst the Soap Opera Digest Award for Outstanding Younger Lead Actress, as well as an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Younger Actress in 1999 and a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 2007.
Fictional character history
Character background
General Hospital writers brought Elizabeth Webber to Port Charles at the age of fourteen. She is the granddaughter of Dr. Steve Hardy, one of General Hospital's original characters, and the daughter of Dr. Jeff Webber. She grew up in Boulder, Colorado before coming to Port Charles. Elizabeth was not close to her parents. They often neglected her and her sister, Sarah. But when they were around, they only paid attention to Sarah unless Elizabeth got in trouble. When Elizabeth first came to town, she was a rebel. But after many tragedies, she has become a beloved character and heroine on General Hospital.
She has two children, Cameron Webber and Jake Spencer and many fans think of her and Lucky Spencer as a supercouple as well as her and Jason Morgan. Elizabeth works at General Hospital as an OR nurse.
Rape/ Meeting Lucky
A young and rebellious Elizabeth blew into Port Charles, landing on her step-grandmother Audrey's doorstep unannounced, in August 1997. She instantly developed a crush on Lucky Spencer. When he introduced himself as "Lucky", she replied, "We'll see." However, Lucky had his own crush on her sister, Sarah, who she was already compared unfavorably to.
On Valentine's Day 1998, Liz was wandering through the park, despondent because Lucky had taken her sister Sarah to the Valentine's Day dance. After she sat down on a bench, she was grabbed from behind, taken to the bushes and raped. Sometime later, Liz crawled out from the bushes, only to be spotted by Lucky Spencer. Lucky took Liz home, and the Spencer family helped her through her ordeal. This incident led to the revelation to Lucky that his father, Luke, had raped his mother, Laura, almost twenty years before. Lucky left home, moving in with Liz for a short while, before camping out in a boxcar and eventually moving into his own one-room apartment.
Lucky and Elizabeth
Liz and Lucky became close to Emily Quartermaine and Nikolas Cassadine. She and Lucky struggled through their teen years and fell in love. Then tragedy struck. In April 1999, the motorcycle shop which housed Lucky's apartment burst into flames. Lucky was presumed dead, and Liz was grief-stricken. Over the next several months, Liz became close friends with Jason Morgan, who helped her deal with the loss of her first love.
In 2000, Luke and Laura discovered that Lucky was alive. He had been held captive by Helena Cassadine and brainwashed into believing that he did not love Elizabeth. Although they tried to make it work and lost their virginities to each other, Lucky and Liz eventually parted ways. Lucky and Elizabeth were married in 2005 but divorced in January 2007 and then later remarried in 2007.
Lucky became addicted to pills and cheated on Liz with Maxie Jones. Liz caught the two of them together and sought comfort from Jason. They spent a night together, but she did not tell Lucky. Elizabeth found out she was pregnant and had a paternity test. The test proved that Jason was the father but because Lucky was willing to go to rehab for this new child, Liz did not tell him he was not the father. She eventually confessed the truth to Jason, however, and he agreed to let she and Lucky raise his son because of his dangerous lifestyle. While Jason was arrested for the murder of Lorenzo Alcazar, Elizabeth used Lucky's badge to go and see Jason in Pentonville, which made Lucky jealous. During Jason's trial, when Elizabeth was called to the stand by Ric Lansing, he asked her if she had ever slept with Jason while she was married to Lucky. She confessed to spending a night with Jason. Ric also asked her if Jason was her son Jake's father. Elizabeth committed perjury when she said no to protect Jake from Jason's lifestyle.
Lucky was furious with Elizabeth for not telling him about her night with Jason. He is currently beginning an affair with Sam McCall to get back at Liz. Lucky and Elizabeth divorced again in 2007.
Jason and Elizabeth
Jason helped Elizabeth when a man was harassing her at a bar called Jake's. One night, Liz was missing Lucky and asked Jason to dance with her. Carly saw them dancing and thought they were together so she slept with Jason's boss, Sonny Corinthos. Jason was shot the day he found out about Sonny and Carly. Elizabeth found him in the snow outside the boxcar and took him to her studio where she took care of him. They became close friends and even pretended to be lovers so no one would know that he was hurt. Jason left town and when he came back, Lucky had been discovered alive. Jason began to develop feelings for Elizabeth, and Elizabeth returned them. When Jason asked her to go away with him, she said she wanted to stay with Lucky. Jason came back a year later to find that Liz and Lucky were no longer together. Jason and Liz began dating, but Elizabeth kidnapped. Jason pushed her away to protect her from his "dangerous life". Liz turned to her friend Zander Smith one night. Zander and Elizabeth moved in with Jason for protection. Jason and Elizabeth finally admitted to each other that they wanted to be together. Liz ended things with Jason when she found out he lied to her about Sonny's "death." Jason started dating and eventually married Courtney Matthews.
After Elizabeth was kidnapped again by Manny Ruiz in 2006, Jason rescued her once again. Lucky and Elizabeth were married, and Jason was with Sam McCall. After Liz found out about Lucky's addiction to painkillers and affair with Maxie Jones, she confided in Jason who was also hurting after witnessing Sam having sex with his enemy, Ric Lansing. Jason and Elizabeth spent a night together, and she became pregnant. General Hospital shocked viewers when a paternity test showed Jason was the father, but she did not tell him the truth because she thought the baby would ruin his relationship with Sam, turn Lucky back to drugs, and endanger her children's lives. During the hostage crisis at the Metro Court, Elizabeth told Jason the truth. After the hostage crisis, Jason kept the truth about his child from Sam because she told him she could never have children, and he did not want to cause her more pain. Elizabeth decided to remarry Lucky and asked Jason to let her and Lucky raise the baby for the baby's safety. Jason had trouble giving up his son. During a thunderstorm, Jason found an unconscious and bleeding Liz at her home and rushed her to the hospital. She gave birth to Jason's son, via C-section, Jacob Martin.
Sam vowed revenge on Elizabeth and Jason. She hired two men to terrorize Liz. Jason asked Liz to meet him and told her he wanted to build a life with her and tell the truth about Jake's paternity. Elizabeth told Jason of the two men who threatened her, and he reneged on his desires. However, he confessed his love to Elizabeth. She returned his love, and they shared a passionate "goodbye" kiss as they agreed to stay apart for Jake's safety. Jason discovered Sam was behind the threat to Liz and her children, but he did not tell Liz because he still believes Jake is safer with her and Lucky.
Ric and Elizabeth
Ric and Elizabeth were married in 2003. Elizabeth was pregnant with Ric's baby but miscarried when she was pushed on the stairs by Ric's former lover, Faith Rosco. Ric kidnapped Carly Corinthos (then Tamara Braun), and Elizabeth found Carly in the panic room. She divorced him because of his lies and obsession with ruining Sonny's life.
Zander and Elizabeth
Elizabeth and Zander were good friends. After she was kidnapped, she was afraid and alone, and she and Zander had a one-night-stand. She was in love with Jason and decided not to sleep with Zander again. They remained friends. While Liz was separated from Ric and Zander from Emily, they had another one-night-stand. That night, they conceived their son, Cameron Webber. Zander died before Cameron was born. Elizabeth says that Cameron looks a lot like Zander.
Love triangles
Lucky/Elizabeth/Jason triangle (2000-present)
The love triangle between Lucky, Elizabeth, and Jason has been going on since the year 2000. When Jason came back to Port Charles, Lucky was back from the dead and back in Elizabeth's arms. Jason and Elizabeth became closer friends and Lucky was very jealous. He told Elizabeth to stop speaking to Jason. She agreed, but only for a while. Lucky attempted to kill Jason many times because of his jealousy over him and Elizabeth. When Jason asked her to run away with him, she told him no, because she felt that she had to stay with Lucky. Elizabeth later admitted to Jason that she fell in love with him.
Years went by, and Lucky and Elizabeth married. Lucky later became addicted to drugs and Elizabeth went to Jason for help. Jason and Elizabeth made love for the first time after Elizabeth caught Lucky cheating on her. Elizabeth and Lucky divorced and Elizabeth became pregnant. She had a paternity test taken and it showed that Jason was the baby's father. She lied and said that Lucky was the father. Liz later re-married Lucky, and after Lucky found out about Elizabeth and Jason's one-night-stand, the feud began again. Lucky yelled at Jason every chance he got and blamed him for their failed marriage. Lucky and Elizabeth divorced and Lucky tried to take Jake away from Elizabeth, even when he found out he was Jason's son.
Zander/Elizabeth/Jason (2002)
In the summer of 2002, a new love triangle emerged with Zander, Elizabeth, and Jason. Elizabeth became friends with Zander Smith and was also close to Jason Morgan. When Jason and Zander wanted to be with her romantically, she didn't know who to choose. Zander and Jason were enemies before the triangle began. Zander and Liz were kidnapped by Jason's enemies and while trapped, became close friends. When Elizabeth needed Jason after he rescued her, he chose to leave her to help Carly instead. Elizabeth, scared and alone and hurt, turned to new friend, Zander. Zander and Elizabeth slept together that night, but Elizabeth realized that she wanted to be with Jason. She broke up with Zander to be with Jason. Jason, who had seen Elizabeth and Zander, decided to not be friends with her anymore. But when Elizabeth and Zander were in danger again, they moved into Jason's penthouse.
Jason and Elizabeth admitted that they wanted to be together and dated for a while.
Zander may have won her body, but Jason won her heart.
Lucky/Sam/Jason/Elizabeth (2007-present)
This quadrangle began the summer of 2007. Sam was out for revenge on Elizabeth for having her ex-fiancee's, Jason's, child. Sam began to seduce a married Lucky into sleeping with her to hurt Elizabeth. Elizabeth did not care because she was in love with Jason. Jason and Elizabeth admitted to each other that they were in love while she was still married to Lucky. After Elizabeth found out about Lucky and Sam had sex, they decided that they should get a divorce.
In the end, Lucky and Sam became friends with benefits but Jason could not claim his son since Elizabeth committed perjury by saying that she had a paternity test that showed Lucky (who was her husband at the time) as the father of Jacob Martin in court at Jason's trial when he was charged for murdering Lorenzo Alcarzar.
Children
Unnamed Child
Ric and Elizabeth were dating at the time of conception. He broke up with her before Elizabeth told him she was pregnant. Not able to take care of a baby by herself, Elizabeth thought of getting an abortion. She decided against it and told Ric about the baby. Ric was excited and asked her to marry him. They married in a small ceremony. Ric's jealous ex-lover, Faith Rosco pushed Elizabeth down a flight of stairs at the Port Charles Hotel. Liz miscarried. Ric blamed his half brother, Sonny Corinthos.
Cameron Webber
After her and Ric divorced, Liz went to Jake's bar and saw Zander Smith there. Zander was hurting because he had just found his wife Emily Quartermaine having an affair with Nikolas Cassadine. They slept together. Liz became pregnant and Ric thought the baby was his. Since Zander didn't want the baby, Liz let Ric believe he was the father. She later told him the truth but Ric still wanted to be with her and raise the baby together. Ric and Liz re-married. Ric blackmailed Zander into giving up his paternal rights of the baby without Elizabeth's knowledge. Zander later died in a police shootout. Liz found out about Ric's lies and divorced him again. Liz left town to have her son, Cameron. He was named Cameron after his paternal grandfather Cameron Lewis. Elizabeth has said many times that Cameron looks a lot like Zander. Cameron was born off-screen in June of 2004. Elizabeth's soon-to-be ex-husband, Lucky, is helping her raise Cameron though he has not adopted him.
Unnamed Child
After Lucky was injured and unable to pay his medical bills, Liz needed to raise money for him. She offered to be a surrogate mother for Jasper Jacks and his wife (who thought she was unable to carry a child) Courtney Matthews. Lucky and Liz drifted apart from the surrogacy and Lucky moved out of the apartment they shared. Jax and Elizabeth were in a car accident and Liz miscarried again. Liz and Jax have remained friends. They planted a tree a year after she miscarried and spoke about the hopes they had for their "daughter" and how they would raise her.
Jake Spencer
After Liz found out her husband, Lucky, was addicted to painkillers and having an affair with Maxie Jones, Elizabeth went to old friend, Jason Morgan for help. Jason had just seen his lover, Sam McCall with his enemy and her stepfather, Ric Lansing. That night, they slept together. Liz found out she was pregnant. She took a paternity test. It said that Jason was the baby's father but she lied and said it was Lucky's baby to keep Lucky off of drugs, so Sam and Jason could reconcile, and the baby would be safe from the mob. During the Metro Court hostage crisis, Liz told Jason the truth about the baby. They agreed to let everyone, including Lucky, think that Lucky was the father of her baby to protect it from the mob. Elizabeth gave birth to Jacob Spencer, Jake for short.
Current Storyline
Sonny and Jason's enemy, Anthony Zacchara is out to get Sonny and Jason and take their territory. Anthony has already had Michael Corinthos III and Morgan Corinthos's nanny, Leticia killed in Carly's home. This has shown Liz that she made the right decision about keeping Jake's paternity a secret. Elizabeth has started to carry a gun to keep her kids and herself safe.
Johnny Zacchara kidnapped, sister-in-law and good friend, Lulu. Jason and Spinelli found her. When Liz came looking for Lulu,Jason told her that many people know about Jake's paternity and Sam's involvement in Jake's kidnapping and the men in the park threatening her.
On September 17, Lucky slept with Sam. Lucky and Elizabeth decided to divorce and Elizabeth has asked Diane Miller to help her with her divorce. Lucky does not like that Elizabeth wants sole custody and hired, Alexis Davis to be his lawyer and is suing for sole custody. Elizabeth is trying to move on with her life and has bought a new house. Lucky and Elizabeth decided that she would have primary custody of the boys and he would have unlimited visitation.
