Semi-Protection

Hey Fuzheado, I saw you just reverted vandalism on the article George W. Bush, and, not to sound too much like a TV announcer, but "Are you sick and tired of constant reversions? I like the idea of semi-protection, as it's clear the GWB page is 90% vandalism. I'd raise the threshold a bit more, like the old SPAT (Sock Puppet Avoidance Threshold) of old, of 25 or 50 edits. Fuzheado | Talk 05:59, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

While I understand where you're coming from, that's really not what semi-protection is for. Semi-protection is meant for short-term vandalism sprees - not permanent use on an article. There was no particular vandalism spree at homosexuality - at the very least, nothing to justify the ugly header. If that is going to be plastered all over the top of our most heavily viewed articles, it's really not going to do wonders for our credibility. Ambi 11:12, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia

When you semi-protect a page, please remember to list it at WP:PP. It's especially important at the moment as the policy and technology are new. Also remember that semi is not a solution to apply to an article that is simple high-profile; it needs to have a serious vandalism problem. Also remember that protected pages are still considered harmful and that semi should be a temporary measure just as full-protection is. Admins must work hard to not allow Wikipedia to creep towards a uniformly semi-protected state. -Splash^talk 12:50, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

You seem to have semi'd quite a number of pages, without giving any reasons or noting the fact on talk pages. Semi-protection is not a "thank god, now anons can't edit anymore' option. Please don't overuse it. Ambi has unprotected Homosexuality and I've unprotected Evolution. Neither show then-current vandalism problems and so any level of protection at all is unnecessary. Evolution does show an IP address hitting the article yesterday, but then a block should be used. Protection is a last resort: and semi should be used no more often than full-protection as a rule. If you can block, block, if you can't and they won't go away, semi-protect for a little while. -Splash^talk 12:57, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Careful with others' comments

But I wonder why they are relevant. SP's purpose is to temporarily stand in the way of drive-by vandalism. It is not to walk around prohibitnig anonymous editing widely, and is not dependent on some history of vandalism. Semi-protection of my user page

I already listed it under Wikipedia:Protected_page#User_pages. I think it makes much more sense to sort pages based on their type (e.g. Article, Talk page, User page), rather than based on which kind of protection was applied to them. However, I specifically marked the entry for it on WP:PP, as well as that of many others I reduced from full- to semi-protection, as "semi-protected". The Wikipedia:Protected_page#Semi-protection section is specifically for real articles being semi-protected, not for Talk, User or other types of pages. Owen× ☎ 23:49, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

Block

Well, the person I blocked had been adding unsubstantiated rumours to an article on a candidate in the Canadian federal election. While I didn't warn the individual my previous edit to the article made it clear this wasn't acceptable (particularly since that article was the subject of a news report in the Ottawa Citizen accusing Wikipedia of allowing gossip in its biographical articles of election candiates (see Free online encyclopedia fuels gossip on candidates Speculation, innuendo rampant on Wikipedia)

The reason I blocked the IP for a month was a) it was a dedicated IP that had done this over a period of time and b) the election will be done in a month. Homey 03:12, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

What about the claim that Ann Coulter is part of the Christian Right? Her books "Slander", "Treason", and "How to Talk to a Liberal if You Must" are biased but have no religious content whatsoever. So again, how can Ann Coulter be in the Christian Right list?

Hank Williams dips into the surreal

Thanks for your previous comment on my semi-protection of Hank Williams. The issue with the vandal has now taken a surreal turn--the guy posted on the article's talk page that he witnessed these events and that I'm part of the conspiracy to cover up the facts he keeps inserting into the article (he also made a comment that I'm a "very stupid hillbilly indeed" but I can't help but laugh at that). Anyway, could you please advise me what to do. This is no longer a clear-cut vandalism case but instead a case of no original research. Since the user can't be blocked b/c he keeps using sock puppets, how do you suggest dealing with this? Hi! I'm Chungpui from Chinese Wiki. Now they plan to hold the Chinese Wikipedia Meeting on 26 and 27 August 2006. The location is still under election. Although Hong Kong gets alot of support, we don't have a solid plan on finance and veune, and seems that we lack core members who are mature (age18+) and willing to dedicate tehir time. At the same time Taipei have some core members and a possible support from Academia Sinica. So seems that now only Taipei has a realistic plan. I notice that you are from HKU. Do you think it's possible to get support from HKU (finance and veune) if HK hosts the meeting? If we can solve these 2 problems I think it will be very realistic to launch a HK meeting. The Wikimedia Foundation runs a Communications Committee, which co-ordinates requests for interviews from the press. Libya

Hi,

I've recently added Libya to the list of featured article candidates. Overall the candidature is going well with many of the objections now sorted out. The final concrete objection is with the article's prose. I have been the main contributor to the article and have been looking at it for the previous 9 - 10 months. My eyes no longer see it freshly, so I am not a suitable copy-editor!

To meet the final demand of copy editing, I have been advised to ask different people to edit parts of the article.

I would really love to get this article featured as you can probably see from the page's history! I've worked very hard on it and I see this as possibly being the final hurdle.

You can see the prose objections, mostly raised by Sandy, on the candidature page. If you have the time, please choose a section (Politics, Religion, Culture etc.) and copyedit, perfect, ace it! I would be very grateful with any help I can get.

Need guidance about biased edits of California Air Resources Board

Fuzheado, I am asking for your guidance because you were the originator of California Air Resources Board (CARB) and because you have been a Wikipedian for very much longer than I have been.

I hope that you can advise me what to do about what are, in my opinion, some highly biased diatribes edited into the California Air Resources Board (CARB) article. The two edits involved were made today (October 6, 2006) by User:67.160.235.141 at 14:40 and 16:30 respectively. You should read them in that time order to see what he has done. I realize that there are people who disagree with CARB for many different reasons, but these two edits use some very biased, sarcastic and derogatory comments. What is the best way of handling this? Looking at User:Fuzheado/jmsc0101/instructions#ASSIGNMENT_GOALS, I am somewhat nervous that you require your students to use a particular format of username, which includes their first name. Many people are nervous about posting their name online. In addition, the format of the username would allow people to identify them as JMSC students. Many people who have disclosed their real name online have regretted it. See Wikipedia:Username and m:Right to vanish. October statistics

Hi there! It's been a while since I last heard from you, so it was a pleasant surprise to see your query on my talk page tonight. I have an account with all 250 wikipedia language projects, with an article counter on my user page. I have a special browser (IE2) which automatically opens multiple windows (my user page in the various languages) simultaneously. I then transferred them to a spreadsheet. Ok, just to clarify that. There's currently a semi-protection backlog over at WP:PP and CAT:SEMI (people have brought it up on ANI and such and asked people to help out). The reason I was unprotecting en masse was due to this backlog. In fact, I know of one other admin who unprotected more than the 30 I did that day. I will accept that unprotecting Anus was a bad idea and poor judgement on my part, but one other of those you highlighted on my talk page (Asshole), has had very little vandalism since unprotection. One gripe I do have is with your statement that I unprotected articles "without even looking at why they were protected in the first place". I actually skipped over numerous articles on CAT:SEMI because I didn't feel unprotection would be beneficial (in cases where it was protected to prevent sockpuppetry or banned users editing and the like). Poop deck was ultimately unprotected after consensus was reached on ANI. At any rate, if I have to be a fundamentalist of any kind I think I'd like to be a wiki fundamentalist over the other possibilities. :)
Summary: I made a few poorly thought out calls with Anus and Douche, but I think you may have mistaken backlog clearing for indiscriminate unprotection of dozens of articles. -- Steel 17:05, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm the "other admin". I was planning on letting your latest criticism of my unprotections go unremarked upon, but since I've been referred to on the podcast and here...

Like Steel, I found a notice on ANI that there was a backlog of unreviewed protections. It was not an indiscriminate unprotection as I evaluated both the reason given by the protecting admin, the amount of time that had passed, as well as looking at the talk to see if there is was relevant discussion. In cases where the protection was recent, where the protecting admin stated that it was in effect an IAR exception to the guideline against indefinite semiprotection, or where there was current discussion on issues relating the reason for the protection, I did not unprotect. In the case of Jimmy Wales, the protecting admin's edit summary ("recent vandalism") clearly assumed that it would eventually be unprotected. The article had been unprotected about half the time over the previous two months, so there is no "It's always been protected so it should stay protected" argument to be made.

As Steel notes, protection review is an inexact process. In response to concerns from other users, I carried out an review six days after my 84 unprotects to J through M. Of these, 11 had been reprotected and 14 had not been edited at all. You can argue that I should be able to know that the 11 (and several others that I've noted returned to protection since) shouldn't have been unprotected, but how do you know that the 14 (as well as the dozens that returned to editing normality) should have, unless you unprotect them and see? (I did try to be a bit more conservative with the marginal calls in subsequent review.) There are a number of issues tangled up with this, one of which is that some users seem to think that protection is an inviolate action that should not be questioned, while at the same time admins are clearly protecting pages and forgetting about them. If an admin states in their edit summary that a page deserves indefinite protection, and I disagree, I would certainly discuss it before unprotecting. If an admin thinks that an article should be indefinitely protected but instead writes "+sprotect, lots of vandalism" as the reason, he or she should not be surprised if other admins can't mindread and eventually remove the protection in accordance with policy.

I have no desire to drag this topic back into your fine podcast, where I think your repeated criticism of unprotection is beginning to verge on off-wiki lobbying. If you do think it is worth comment, I trust that you will represent my reasoning above fairly, rather than using it as a entry point to restate your own position. BanyanTree and Steel359, I see your side of the issue, and I don't mean for WikipediaWeekly to be a bully pulpit for my viewpoint. As we've mentioned many times, we seek out a multitude of voices and issues, so I heartily invite you both to come onto the podcast to either talk about protection specfically, or as part of the greater discussion on the long-term trajectory of Wikipedia with regards to quality, openness and the participation of anons. It's an issue that we have talked about in passing many times:

• As Wikipedia (en: at least) moves forward, past 1.5 million articles and as articles reach more "finished" states, will protection only be used in the way it is used now, only as a last resort and a temporary measure?
• Is semi-protection a state that should be used as an article matures?
• What can we reasonably expect an anon to add to "poop deck" or "anus" that would be useful, as innovations in those particular subjects are not likely?
• Or should protection stay the domain of emergency measures when we get real "stable versions" in place with a "publicly approved version" and a "draft version"?

It's a conversation we want to have on WW, and we welcome your participation.

It may either be by chance or because "birds of a feather flock together" but the podcast crew for the last few weeks don't seem to vary much on this issue. But that could well be that the panel seems to have a preponderance of RC patrollers, who would likely favor protection earlier and longer than the average admin.

Human readable pronounciations

The Germans pronounce his name as if it were German (and that's how I'd pronounce it, German name == German pronounciation). The only people who'd be helped by your version are people who talk more or less like you and who care how it the name is supposed to sound. My suspicion is that most readers couldn't care less how John L. pronounces his name, any more than they'll care how to pronounce Łódź, Reims or Beaulieu. For those that really do care we have IPA. The set of people who care, and share your manner of speaking, is unlikely to be large. If you really feel that the IPA needs supplementing, why not add a recording ? Semi-protection of talk page?

I find it's a very, very bad idea to semi-protect your talkpage. By being an administrator, you need to allow anonymous editors to talk to you for a variety of reasons.

1. There are a few anonymous editors with thousands of edits who are as respectable as any Wikipedian with a username.
2. If you warn an anonymous editor, they can't ask you for help.

"Context"

Hi, Fuzheado. Upon further reflection, I'm not as sure as I was earlier that there is any context that sufficiently justifies Essjay misrepresenting himself to the New Yorker reporter. Earlier, I thought that he had created the "professor" persona after being stalked by Daniel Brandt, but now it seems that is not the case. I'm not sure why he created the "professor" persona, but it was quite early in his Wikipedia activities (see here). Given that Brandt did subsequently stalk many prominent Wikipedians, it is understandable that Essjay would choose to maintain the professor persona, but it's not quite so understandable why he would then choose to speak to a reporter at length under false pretenses.

I also don't think that Essjay's current position of leaving any comment to Wikia's PR firm is particularly beneficial, to him or to Wikipedia's reputation. —Josiah Rowe (talk • contribs) 05:37, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Videos of Wikimania Taipeh 2007

Hi Fuzheado, when I remember correctly from Wikipedia Weekly, you said that you plan to make the Wikimania 2007 more interactive, so that Wikipedians who cannot participate can at least watch the conference on video. I do not know if you organize the videos, or if you know the person who will be responsible. There were some glitches at Wikimania Boston 2006, and perhaps it is possible to not repeat them.

1. The videos should be taken in a free video format, at least as an alternative format. --> Ogg Theora. (Real media is not a good format)
2. They should be freely licenced with a Wikimedia Commons compatible licence --> e. g. dual-licenced GFDL/CC-BY-SA 2.5 or later. Even though Commons at the moment limits filesize at about 20 MB, it is very likely that in the future also bigger files will be supported, and then we need these files for documentation.

I hope this can be arranged. Many wikipedians from Germany are very interested in the conferences and discussions, but will not be able to participate, because Taiwan is so far away. And you do a good job at Wikipedia Weekly ! I listen in regularly.

Hi Fuzheado. I happened to read your piece, linked from the current signpost, after my punk attempt at 'article rescue' on Radio Monash, a top^[1] universities online radio station. They happen to be part of academic courses in new journalism, which I assume would interest you. I have seen projects roused to rescuing articles with great effect, but a lot of stuff is beyond their scope and is trashed and added to a nominators 'score'. I hope this 'sport' is stopped. Convincing the Powers that Be at my School that Wikipedia assignments are worth it

I am very impressed by your work at Hong Kong University. Im hoping you are still active enough here to help a newbie instructor. I have a current project at Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects#ITESM_Campus_Toluca_-_Advanced_B_English_Course_.28Profesional.29. As you probably know, it is a LOT easier to convince students of the value of using computer and Internet-based projects than it is teachers and administrators. While I have managed to get this semester's course based on Wikipedia and they have been pretty good about letting me experiment, they have let me know that they are "indulging" me. Ah politics! I also noticed that you got your Hong Kong project reported on CNN. How did you manage that? Something similar (not CNN so much but maybe a Mexico news outlet) would go a long way to helping my case as ITESM sure wouldnt mind positive publicity. Can you tell me, is there a set period of time that a new subscriber becomes "unmoderated", or is it just whenever one of the list admins "approve" them?
