Sagittarius is an astrological sign, which originated from the constellation Sagittarius, and is the ninth sign of the Zodiac. Sagittarius is classed as a Positive or masculine, extrovert sign; its element is Fire and its Quality is Mutable.[2] Traditionally in astrology Sagittarius is ruled by the planet Jupiter. The opposite sign to Sagittarius is Gemini. Under the tropical zodiac, Sagittarius is occupied by the Sun from November 23 to December 21, and under the sidereal zodiac, it is currently from December 16 to January 14. In House (astrology) the 9th House is the house the Sagittarian rules, and dates occupied for the House is occupied on March 6 to April 19. The corresponding month in the Babylonian calendar is Arax Kislimu, dedicated to Nergal.

In astrology the astrological signs represent twelve equal segments or divisions of the zodiac. According to astrological beliefs, celestial phenomena reflect or govern human activity on the principle of "as above, so below", so that the twelve signs at the same time are held to represent twelve basic personality types or characteristic modes of expression.[3] The scientific community generally considers astrology as a pseudoscience or superstition.[4][5] ; yet despite this, belief in astrology remains widespread.[6][7][8][9]

In mythology Sagittarius is often associated with either a Satyr or a Centaur (in the case of the latter, often the centaur Chiron,who taught and tutored various heroes in Greek myth). In Greek mythology, centaurs were adventurous, brave, and wise, but they were also given to brawling and uncivilized behavior. Sagittarius is also associated with the Greco-Roman god Zeus/Jupiter and sometimes the goddess Tyche/Fortuna, as well as the Norse god Thor.[citation needed]

The astrological symbol for Sagittarius has a dual meaning. The first and most common is that of a bow and arrow. The second and less well-known is that of an arrow lifting up a cross-shaped burden: Representing the struggle the Sagittarius faces. Sagittarians have its ruling planet as Jupiter, not only one of the most important gods in Roman mythology (ruler of the heavens), but also the planet that signifies good fortune in astrology.(see below)

As listed above, the Sagittarius has several good qualities, but with a few serious flaws. They are seen as having a duality similar to that of the Centaur or Satyr above. The Sagittarius's dual natures, that of the beast (aggressive, rebellious, sexual, free-roaming, etc.) and the higher nature (philosophical, open-minded, honest etc.) are said to be in constant conflict. The day to day struggle of the Sagittarius is represented in the astrological sign, which is interpreted by some to be an arrow lifting a heavy, cross-shaped burden.
