Matthew Thomas Schobel (Template:PronEng) (born November 4, 1978 in Columbus, Texas) is an American football tight end in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles. A former quarterback at Columbus High School, he switched to playing tight-end on the college level at Texas Christian University. The 6-foot, 5-inch, 250 pound Schobel is nicknamed, "The Schoboat" (a play on his surname, which is pronounced SHOW-bul.) He is the younger brother of Buffalo Bills defensive end Aaron Schobel and the cousin of Arizona Cardinals defensive end Bo Schobel.[1]
College
Matt Schobel originally signed with Texas A&M as a quarterback in 1997. He was redshirted as a freshman, and decided to transfer to Texas Christian University, sitting out the 1998 season per NCAA transfer rules. Due to his size and surprising quickness and mobility, he was converted to tight end in 2000 and played three seasons (1999-2001) at Texas Christian University.
NFL
Matt Schobel was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round (the 67th player overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft.
Schobel played four years with the Bengals where he tallied 90 receptions for 938 yards and nine touchdowns. In 2006, he became an unrestricted free agent and signed a five-year deal with the Eagles.
Through 2007, Schobel has seen action in 30 games, starting 10. He has 24 receptions for 314 yards and three touchdowns.
