Skyline of Indianapolis

This list of tallest buildings in Indianapolis ranks skyscrapers and high-rises in the U.S. city of Indianapolis, Indiana by height. The tallest building in the city is the 48-story Chase Tower, which rises 830 feet (253 m) and was completed in 1990.[1] The structure is the tallest completed building in the state,[2] and is the tallest building in the Midwest outside Chicago and Cleveland, Ohio.[1] The city's second tallest structure is the OneAmerica Tower; it was the tallest building in Indiana from 1982 until 1990, when the Chase Tower was completed.[3] Of the 40 tallest buildings in Indiana, 33 are located in Indianapolis.[2]

The history of skyscrapers in Indianapolis began with the completion in 1895 of Thomas Building, which is regarded as the first high-rise in the city.[4] Before it was demolished this structure stood 13 stories and 170 feet (52 m) in height.[4] Indianapolis went through an early high-rise construction boom in the 1960s, during which time the city saw the completion of the 372-foot (113 m) City-County Building.[5] The City-County Building was the first building in the city to be taller than the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, and was the tallest building in the city until 1970.[5] However, the pace of new high-rise construction then remained slow until 1982; starting in that year, Indianapolis entered into a large building boom that lasted until 1990. During that time, seven the city's ten tallest skyscrapers were built, including the Chase Tower, OneAmerica Tower, and One Indiana Square.[1][3][6] Chase Tower is the only Indianapolis skyscraper that ranks among the tallest in the United States. As of June 2008, there are 91 completed high-rises in the city.[7] Indianapolis ranks first in the state in high-rise count ahead of Fort Wayne.[8]

Indianapolis has been the site of very little high-rise construction since the construction boom ended in 1990 with the completion of Chase Tower; since then, only two skyscrapers that rank in city's twenty tallest buildings have been constructed, the tallest being the 287-foot (87 m) Conrad Indianapolis.[9] The most recent high-rise development in the city was Simon Property Group Headquarters, which was completed in 2006.[10] As of June 2008, there are five high-rise buildings under construction in Indianapolis.[11] There is also one major high-rise reconstruction taking place in the city; One Indiana Square is currently going through an exterior makeover after being damaged by high winds on April 2, 2006.[12] The largest high-rise development taking place in Indianapolis is JW Marriott Hotel, which is expected to rise 37 stories and 376 feet (115 m) in height.[13] Once completed the JW Marriott Hotel will be the 7th tallest building in the city.[14]
