Nicholas Alan Bollea
Born (1990-07-27) July 27, 1990 (age 33)

Nicholas Alan Bollea (born July 27, 1990), better known by his stage name Nick Hogan is an American reality television personality best known from his appearances on the reality show Hogan Knows Best alongside his elder sibling Brooke and their parents Linda and professional wrestler Hulk Hogan in Clearwater, Florida. He has expressed interest in acting, wrestling, and motorsports as careers. On August 26, 2007, Bollea was arrested after a passenger in his car was crippled after the car Bollea was driving slammed into a palm tree at over 80 mph.[1]

Motorsports

Participation

Bollea is active in the NOPI Drift series, qualified 10th at the Denver NOPI drift event of 2007, and placing third at their Pittsburgh event.Nick also occasionally attends amateur drifting competitions. Nick has attended two of Chris Tyler's drifting events in the Tampa Bay area. One of these was a drifting competition in DeSoto county the Friday prior to the crash of Nick's Toyota Supra. Nick did not compete, but he did give drifting demonstrations between the runs of competitors.[2]

Nick earned a Formula D competition license in 2006 and is often described as a professional drifter.[3] However, Formula Drift spokesman John Pangilinan says that Bollea has only competed in one of their competitions. This was the Formula Drift event that was held in Atlanta on May 12, 2007.[4] Nick is currently scheduled to compete in the Formula D championship at Irwindale, California on October 13,[5] pending any legal ramifications due to the Supra incident.

Nick is not listed in Formula D's Professional Championship standings for 2007 or 2006,[6][7] is not a member of any of the teams participating in Formula D's Team Drift Series,[8] and is not in the current list of Formula drivers.[9]

Competition vehicles and crew

Nick has two Dodge Vipers with steering that has been modified to enhance their drifting capability,[10] but his current competition vehicle is a Nissan 350Z.[11][12] John Graziano (the former Marine injured in the Supra crash) Danny Jacobs (the driver of the silver Viper seen with the Supra at the time of the crash) worked in Nick Bollea's pit crew during 2007 in St. Louis, Denver and Los Angeles.[13][14] Barry Lawrence, the passenger of the viper, was also a member of Nick's pit crew.[15]

Sponsorship

Nick's celebrity status and enthusiasm for drifting have attracted sponsors who are eager to associate themselves with his name. Nick was briefly signed to Dodge, but company spokesman Todd Goyer said that he "is not a Dodge driver or a Mopar driver", and that his relationship with Dodge/Mopar ended two months prior to his 2007 crash.[16] He was sponsored for the 2007 season by Polaroid, Mac Tools, BF Goodrich and Sparco[17] These companies are still listed on the NOPI website as sponsors of Nick's drift car,[18] but Polaroid VP of marketing Cheryl Mau has said, "We do not have a signed sponsorship agreement with Nick Hogan for the 2008 race season."[19]

Vehicle incidents

Lamborghini fire

In 2006, in Bay Harbor Islands, Florida, Nick was driving a yellow 2001 Lamborghini Diablo VT owned by Cecile Barker (chairman of SoBe Entertainment, the record label attached to his sister) when it caught on fire. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesman Paul Perry said "It was a normal car fire. It happens a bunch of times every day and nobody notices."[20][21]

Traffic violations

In 2006, within the first year of obtaining his license, Nick was ticketed five times[22][23] and received eight points,[24] enough to restrict his driving to business purposes - on his record. The custom license tag on Nick's black 1998 Supra is "COEHSP2",[25] a reference to the police acronym for "Capable Of Eluding High Speed Pursuit".

In 2007 Nick gave an interview with Rides in which he talked about his habit of driving fast on public roads. In this interview he said that he was driving a silver Viper between Miami and Tampa when he was pulled over three times for driving in excess of 100 mph. Nick told the interviewer that the final stop - the only one resulting in a ticket - he was driving 123 mph in a 50 mph zone.[26] The events described in the interview do not match police records.[27] His mother has said that the interview was exaggerated.[28] The ticket which most closely resembles the events described in the Rides interview is his September 26, 2006 citation when he was driving a Mercedes (not a Viper), was stopped twice (not three times), and was ticketed for going 117 mph (not 123 mph) in a 70 mph zone (not a 50 mph zone).[27]

Date Violation
September 17, 2006 Nick was driving a black Mercedes when he was stopped along Alligator Alley for speeding. He claimed that he had a family emergency, and was let go with a warning. He was stopped 19 miles later going 115 mph in a 70 mph zone and issued a $305.50 citation.[29][27]
February 8, 2007 Nick was ticketed in Dade County, Florida for driving 57 mph in a 30 mph zone.[27][23]
April 25, 2007 Nick was ticketed for driving 106 mph in a 70 mph zone in Osceola County.[30] He was convicted and received four points on his license.[31]
August 10, 2007 Nick was ticketed in Pinellas Park after his 1998 Toyota was recorded going 82 mph in a 45 mph construction zone while workers were present.[32] He pleaded no contest, was fined $1,000, and received another four points on his license.[33] He was also ordered to attend a 12 hour driver improvement school.

Nick was arrested again on November 7, 2007 for Reckless Driving Causing Serious Bodily Injury. He was then brought to Pinellas County Jail.

Supra crash and criminal charges

Overview

Nick was involved in a serious accident in Clearwater, Florida on the evening of August 26, 2007 at around 7:31pm ET.[34] Nick and three members of the pit crew for his drifting team[35] were using two of his father's cars - a yellow Toyota Supra[36] and a silver viper - to travel to a steakhouse when the single-vehicle crash occurred at Court St. and Missouri Ave., near downtown Clearwater. The yellow supra which Nick had been driving in the outside lane[37] fishtailed and spun across the road, crashing into the median strip and into a palm tree. The impact of the collision "destroyed the entire car".[21] The posted speed limit on that stretch of road was 40 mph, but a reconstruction of the crash by police shows that the supra was traveling "in excess of 60 mph".[37] Danny Jacobs - the pit crew member driving the silver viper - told police that the speed of the two cars was "not more than 70".[37] After the crash Nick told medical workers[37] and members of the drifting community[38] that wet roads were the cause of his crash. Viper passenger and pit crew member Barry Lawrence told police that they were "speeding around" and added that Nick and Danny "always drive like that".[37]

Aftermath

After the crash, Jacobs and Lawrance drove to the Bollea family residence to inform Nick's father of the crash. They then returned to the scene of the accident where they were interviewed by police.[37] Nick and his passenger, 22-year-old John Graziano, were flown to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Florida. Nick was released from care on August 27 and is "ok".[39] Graziano, a US Marine[21] and a former member of Nick's pit crew,[40] was not wearing a seatbelt[41] and received major head trauma as a result of the accident.[42] The eye and brain injuries he sustained are expected to leave him in a nursing home the rest of his life.[43]

Legal issues

Hogan was charged with three charges, including a felony. He turned himself in to authorities at 9:48 a.m. Wednesday, November 7, 2007.[44] Police in Clearwater issued a warrant for his arrest upon completion of an "extensive investigation" of the wreck, by a team of four officers. Because he is being charged as an adult, Nick was booked on the charges at the Pinellas County Jail.[45] He was released within hours on $10,000 bail. Bollea has been charged with Reckless Driving Involving Serious Bodily Injury (A 3rd degree felony, punishable by up to 5 years in prison plus fines), Use of a motor vehicle in commission of a felony, a person under the age of 21 operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level of .02 or higher, and illegal window tint. Nick's lawyer has insisted that the accident was not the result of speeding[46] and has released a video[47] which he claims will disprove the police allegation[37] that Nick was driving at least 50% faster than the posted speed limit. Court records show that two hours after the wreck Nick's ethanol serum level was 0.055. The family of John Graziano have announced that they are preparing a civil suit against the Bolleas in order to pay for John's continuing medical care.[48] Barry Cohen briefly took the case after DUI specialist J. Kevin Hayslett represented Bollea for a few days.[49]

Prior events

Bollea - a minor - and his friends are alleged to have been drinking beers earlier in the day while they were out with his father[50] on the family's boat . The boat at one point paused at Shephard's Tiki Bar, but didn't stop there because the crowd was too large. The boat then went to Three Rooker Island, just south of Anclote Key; then returned to Shephard's, where pit crew member Barry Lawrence claims to have seen Bollea drinking something, but did not know what it was.[51]

Police believe that Nick Bollea and Danny Jacobs were speeding prior to the crash of the supra.[52][53][54][37] and both have been charged with reckless driving.[55][37] Nick's father has said that the cars were not racing,[56] but this contradicts police[55] interviews with eyewitnesses to the crash.[57][58] Frances Vitalis was in traffic the Supra and the Viper, and told the media that the two cars were revving their engines and racing between traffic signals prior to the crash.[57][58] The official police report says that the two cars were racing, but that the actions of Jacobs were not a direct cause of the accident.[55]
